The wood under the leather is quatersawn red oak or rock maple so it is very hard and very flat. It doesn't dent or wear from stopping and I use the flat strops for all of my tools from chisels and gouges to straight knives and hook knives.

Can you use a Japanese wet stone to sharpen them?

I haven't had to use a stone on mine yet, if they get nicked up and really dull then I would use a stone.

is that strop ONLY for your hook knives or can you still use it for your strait blades?
