  • i swear by hockey tape, i always have a roll in my pack

  • Why do you and others include cloth in your fire kit? Why not just go ahead and make it into char cloth and put that in there?

  • Dave, you didn't show boots.

  • In regard to food, I would like to suggest a plastic jar of peanut butter and good supply of raisins. Preparation time is zero. And the food value of these items will take you a long way. Certainly, the other items suggested are fine, too.

  • 31793 people will survive the apocalypse

  • @punbaca basically why i watch this stuff lol

  • I like your beard :)

  • hey dave, thanks for all the videos and the loads of value you provide the survival community! as far as the internet...get an aircard! satellite internet will get you online pretty much anywhere.

  • your attitude for wool is the same as mine

  • dave, with a good wifi antenna that you can get off ebay for 30 bucks, you can easily cover 1/2 mile for a wireless connection. with these antennas on both side of the connection, more than a mile can easily be achieved.

  • woool? wool? dude!!! wool gets soaked and it turns into a heavy useless thing, I respect bushcraft people, but they oriented towards very obsolete technologies.

  • @tealosophy Unlike nylon or cotton, will wool still be warm when it's soaked. Try it.

  • @tealosophy wool still keeps you warm when wet

  • wheres cody londeen

  • 500-600 yards for wireless... lol. Sorry Dave... nope. You need to get an aircard bud.

  • That is a great backpack, but it's expensive as hell..

  • @gowdaflow how much? if you don't mind me asking.

  • @videocheck19

If I'm not mistaken, the online price was close to $390.

  • don't wool itch?

  • Inspirational. What I like most is that you talk relatively fast

  • I thought this was just another video of a guy who watched a video then made one...lol...until I saw him up close...lol...Thank goodness it the one who wears shoes...lol

  • Why do you prefer heavy and cold blankets to warm and light sleeping bags? Is it for ability to sleep closer to fire?

  • @Herofromspace if your light sleeping bag gets drenched its pretty much useless.. a 100% wool blanket is the ONLY fabric that retains over 70-80% of its heat retention even when wet. thats why

  • @Herofromspace Versatility, ember proof, water resistance. Just 100 times better.

  • He's lying to you when he states his coat and pants are "100% wool", They're not. I have the exact same items and their not 100% wool content. There a cheap blend.

  • @kanukster "(...) but if you find these at a surplus or at a gun show make sure that you look at this tag on the inside, this government tag, because it'll tell you if it's 100% wool because they're not all 100% wool." Just because a clothing item looks the exact same doesn't make it so. Manufacturers generally decrease the cost/quality of materials used in their products when sales decrease to step down to a more competitive price point.

  • iodine is good because fluoride decreases your iodine levels.

  • Dave, great video, I too love my US wool blankets; I also find wool breaths well also cutting down on the drippy arm pits

  • i would just like to say that gorila tape does not work when it is cold

  • can you make a summer pack out video. please

  • Certainly agree with your wool theory Dave. i am an advocate for wearing "Long Johns" in winter especially when its really cold, and always promote my idea to others when I can. I have tried synthetic pairs and they just do not help to keep oneself warm like a woollen pair of "long Johns" made from merino wool. Thanks Dave.

  • Thanks for tips buddy. Love your vids Dave

  • WOOL!

    .

  • Blah blah blah boring.

  • @xjuice207x Then go watch some magic tricks or music videos.

  • if you can find the old french army wool blankets their pretty badass the thickest wool blankets I've ever had or seen they have a yellow number stiched in them.

  • im sorry but this guy is just pure badass..

  • What about Italian Army whool blankets? They can be found new on the internet and they are 100% whool. I bought a 4 pack from SPG a few years back.

  • Hey dave, I love the spices that you carry with you. Something that I started carrying with me a few years ago is baking soda. It's the best antacid and works great for skin irritations like insect bites or poisonous plants. It's also great for cleaning cookware, brushing teeth, and eliminating odor in socks and boots...not that I have that problem lol. Just thought i'd share that with you and everyone else.

  • Excellent!!!! Another really great instructional survival video.+++++ Great job Dave. Sincerely Whispering Cloud.

  • is this dave canterbury from dual survival? :D

  • @LTscipio umm yea it is dude

  • @LTscipio yup it is

  • @LTscipio yes...

  • @LTscipio YESYEYSEYSEYSEYSEYSEYSEYSEYSEYSEYSEYEYEYYESYESYESYESYESYE

  • @LTscipio yes

  • @LTscipio i really think it is and where do you get the woll blanket

  • ? For Dave... Havent you been carrying one of the All-Weather Space Blanket/Tarps with you? Gone away from that?

  • verizon satellite network connection

  • Dave, How old is that Columbia jacket because the camo jacket that is available now on their website is a wool blend. Great job. Keep up the good work.

  • Hey Dave, I have several of Cj's Blankets, and a matchcoat. Tony Baker of Baker's Bundles is making blankets that are WONDERFUL. I am looking at getting one from him. The wool is thicker and heavier. I love Cj and Ed's stuff, but since she isn't making them I am putting mine up for home use and looking at other options. Also I know you are THE MAN (think Chuck Norris of survival) But i have made lots and lots and lots of char in an altoid tin with out poking a hole saves from making a hole.

  • @flyinghranch16 is there a website for baker's bundles for these blankets?

  • axe is axe is axe is axe.. You need the skill of using an axe though. A skilled lumberjack with a walmart axe is gonna outchop a poorly skilled person with a GB or wetterlings axe. Also refurbing old axes/axe heads can give u a great quality axe for a few bucks and a bit of elbow grease.

  • Hi Dave can I ask what size cook pot that is? Im in the process of ordering one but saw they have 4 different sizes.

  • nice video

  • Really appreciate these kinds of lessons. Thanks Dave.

  • Hello Dave,

First of all, what a wonderful series of videos - Journal of the Yurt.

Can you tell me where can I find a good quality wool blanket as you mentioned in this video?

Maybe a website or store. What should I look for?

If I don't want go with a military wool blanket, where can I find one like yours which is going to really keep me warm?

    Thank you very much,

    God Bless you.

    Caburai

  • @patrulhacaburai Go to ebay.com and look at Hudson Bay blankets. Get a 4 point or better. In the trapper days each point was a beaver pelt. The more points the better the blanket. This will do great for a top quality blanket. Made in England. Another good one is Pendleton from Oregon. Hope this helps.

  • @woodweezel Points are sizes not quality, No offense just clarification.

  • @flyinghranch16 You are right. I just looked it up on Wikipedia. I got that info on pelts from a guy selling them at a mountain meet. You would think he had it straight. Thanks

  • @woodweezel I have had guy that said beaver traps were bear traps.... Alot of folks in the reenacting hobby don't know much they just like to wear funny clothes. I spend way to much time reading and doing. Tony Baker is making a damn good blanket now. I have 3 of CJ's and my good friend has a Baker, i like it better, thicker and researched patterns.

  • For what it's worth, those Guyot Design bottles are now produced by Nalgene, however, they still appear out of stock for the time being. store.nalgene.com/product-p/1778-1002.htm

  • What spices do you have in your spice kit?

  • Don't know if it was left out, but I would think you would always want about 2-3 pair of wool socks. I carry 3 one of which is a very heavy duty pair and the others are medium duty. Socks are very important IMHO.

  • I wish he would stop saying "crib", it makes him sound like one of those Black hip hop things.

  • Is the yurt on your houses property?

  • dave..that hat is a great fred bear tribute!

  • Hey Dave, maybe I missed it somewhere but what size is the MSR pot? Looks like the smallest one but hard to tell.

  • Love it Dave, keep it up.

  • Cool Informational Video.. I'm thinking grease wood is dry wood that had been soaked in grease..

  • What is grease wood?

  • What is grease wood?

  • i dont know if anyone else has already said this, but using film canisters for food or medicinal use can be hazardous due to the previous content of the film being in them which apparently cant be cleaned out. i dont know how true this is, but as it doesnt concern me i havent taken the time to research it. but those who do use them, maybe its just something to check out. great vid though and it helped me choose my winter kit. thanks alot!

  • Dave, I actually check my email everyday now looking for the next video in your series'. I appreciate you sharing the knowledge you have gained throughout your lifetime. I'm curious about what is in the bag that looks like a dogfood bag, at the foot of your cot?

  • The only thing I would add to that pack would be a rat-trap.

  • Fantastic video Dave.

  • could you please tell me where i can get the red jacket/pullover hanging at the wall in the background?

  • One of the best vids on proper gear selection I have seen. Every piece of gear seleced was well thought out. Will effect my own future selections.

  • Very well thought out Sir! Thank you!

  • Guys,

I'm looking for some good rain boots, similar to what Dave is wearing here in the intro. Dave can you or any of the subscribers/viewers point me in a good direction?

    Thanks all and happy holidays,

    Ben

  • thanks for givin the name of your wool jacket. been wonderin ever since i seen it the 1st time a yr or so ago. your the man

  • Hi Dave, I'm a little confused about your comment discouraging the use of headlamps. Would you please elaborate? Thank you.

  • hey Dave about how much is the axe?

  • dave....you're such a hardass

  • Hello Dave I just wanted to thank you and the hundreds of other you tubers for the skill set you have shared . 2 days before you posted this video I actually became lost in the woods of eastern Tennessee with my dad. a long time ago he bought 40 acres that border a state forest and we wanted to go check it out .We got lost for about an hour really lost but the knowledge I have and my 10 piece kit actually gave me great comfort.I knew I could keep us alive and even comfy lol thanks again

  • @MrSlambangboom glad to hear yall made it out ok...

  • Funny haha I ain't black try red we did many winter trip never wool maybe buffalo hide I do enjoy watching glad my son showed me these video he agreed with you guy about wool till he wore it he i itched all day you made all old man laugh but mother nature provides every thing sap from the pine tree anytime you white boy want to go on top of mtn washington that in nh you take your stupid packs and your wool I'll take buffalo hide

  • Cool vid Dave... Where's Cody? haha... My question is, how much does your pack weigh? Also, do you by chance have videos on the spices you carry and how they service as medicine. Thanks for the tips. You make me wish I would have kept some of my Army gear.

  • ramen noodles are also a good food for your bag because all you need is boiling water

  • Dave, I see the wool blanket, but I guess because I live too far south, I can't find a sturdy 100% wool one. I've located a couple online, but some are handmade and require a deposit to have one handmade - risky. I did locate one that seems substantial, however it's 10% something else. Is anything less than 100% workable? If not 100% what the maximum percentage allowable? I'm sure some others would like to know if a percentage of something else will do. Thanks, Gray Beard!

  • A pair of thin leather gloves are handy to wear in case you have to remove the mittens in freezing weather to shoot your gun.

  • i wish i could grow a beard like yours dave :( its bad ass just so you know :)

Thank you for the wonderful videos, hope all is well!

  • Very informative Dave. Thank you!

  • I love wool, I prefer to go barefoot. When I can't go barefoot, I wear Vibrams toe shoes. The synthetic wool toe socks that Injinji sell for them are the most comfortable wool socks that I've ever worn, and they dry a lot faster than wool.

  • Dave...since they don't make the Wilde wool blanket anymore, what would you suggest. I heard Hudson Bay wool blankets are good but at $320 a bit expensive. What reasonable priced wool blanket would you suggest for the common man? Great video keep 'em comin!

  • Diggin the beard man, gives ya more of an outdoors man look. Nice video as well. I'm interested in this little series.

    PCE

  • As always very educational..Thanks for sharing Dave.

  • thanks for the video!

  • yurt |yoŏrt; yərt|

    noun

a circular tent of felt or skins on a collapsible framework, used by nomads in Mongolia, Siberia, and Turkey.

  • hey dave,

where online do you reccomend i should purchase a steal for flint and steel . i lost mine

    thanks, travis

  • what's different about the military issue wool? that's the only wool blanket I have and I don't even know what they're worth because it was given to me by my father in law who was in the military.

  • i always get fleece instead of wool, much lighter and takes less space. but that is just for backpacking i'm not talking sustained living or anything

  • You mind putting links to all your Gear Dave, just bought your pack on your pathfinder website i look forward to buying more gear, if your able to put the links up or send them to me.. Thanks Dave i might end up taking some of your classes in the winter!!

    -Brad

  • I found this video to be very handy, the last few days I been working on my 3 day bag trying to winterize it.

  • Great Vid Dave. I do 18th Century F&I Canadian impression. Wool is key to keeping warm. I find changing into a dry base layer and thick socks when I make camp essential. For those with less skills a foam pad for sleeping or sitting might be added to the above kit. I'm interested in how the yurt works out. Thanks again. Woodsrunner2007

  • White people are funny beting on wool hahaha a wood handle ax hahahaha this is why white people should not be in the woods tinder box this why I have to find 200 to 300 lost people a year this guy would not last a week in the mountains tinder is every where even in the rain

  • @blkwulff you are a perfect example of why black people never settled the north, there were no sportmarts here back then. you can argue against experience all you like, but it makes you look stupid. if this was a video about surviving in kenya or something, maybe you wouldnt be ignored....

  • @blkwulff 1 Question. Do you have any idea about what you're talking about???? Do you have any idea just how STUPID your comment sounds to all of us that know about Dave?

Reach around behind you and pull your head out. Get yourself recognized as one of the countries Top survival experts then get your own TV show then maybe someone may take you serious Please don't comment unless you know what your talking about, your stupidity could get the inexperienced dead.

  • Nice vid dave:) could u do a vid on all the differ types of food u bring out with u thanks man.

  • Great vid man :) Have to say that you have definitely earned my respect by continuing to regularly post good quality and well thought out YouTube videos, even after your success with Dual Survival. Your stick-to-itiveness and dedication to the proven ways of the old timers shows that you are the real deal. Best wishes to you and yours and keep it up :)

    -Dan

  • hey dave what do u use and carry for footwear in the winter because i have big problems with my toes getting really cold and this hinders my ability to do certain things

  • what would you carry for the summer dave?

  • "Patherfinder Cribz" LOL

  • Does anyone know where I can find a 100% wool overcoat like he was wearing? Looked everywhere and cannot find any pure wool coats. thanks!

  • @swickotine the us army has a thick cotton trench coat with a wool liner its heavy but very warm i foung mine at goodwill aroudn haloween and its the warmest coat i have and it was cheep i got it for 15 dollors

  • To be honest the Wetterlings axe is over priced and not made in America...Like i said before Eastwing sportsman axe is the best axe. But, Dave is right it's my preference, and get a good axe they are key. Another key to the eastwing is the handle you don't need to tape it. Best handle ever. Dave i will send you one so you can do a review on it. Wool is the boom listen to this man.Quick dry'n wool is the best thing you can wear. I prefer matches over lighters in my kit.

  • @bobaloosb Can you tell me what kind of steel the Eastwing is made of? I have looked and looked and no where is the type of steel mentioned. So I am assuming they are made out of cheap pressed, 440 stainless, if they were not eastwing would be using their steel as a selling point. Not really a good choice if your life depends on it! S A Wetterlings Axes are hand-forged from Swedish quality steel alloyed from iron, carbon, silicon, manganese and vanadium. You get what you pay for.

  • @Hutzjohn

I honestly don't know...I would try calling the Rockford center they should let you know. I like it because it is one piece and unlike the Wetterlings upper neck it's not prone to breaking. I guess,Dave will tell us how it goes. Any sharp axe is a good axe if you life depends on it.I was just trying to give him a common mans option instead of a Wetterlings.Trust me my life was on the line with this product more than once. It helped me create warm fires in the hell month of Feb. Try 1!

  • I like that Jacket

  • yellow bic, bad luck

  • The Hudson Bay company is still making their famous wool blankets at the same factory in England, and yes they are expensive.

  • excuse me sir, can i burn your clothes to check if they are made of wool? :P

  • Hi Dave. I've had my eye on the Pathfinder Hawk and was wondering if you thought it could be a replacement for the Wetterlings small axe? Thanks.

  • @LVPG2010 For an axe less than 15" Yes, for a Hunters or Forrest Ax NO

  • Good to know! My wool socks and blanket kept me warm even when wet. .

  • Christmas is RUINED.

    Santa's out camping again...

  • Dave...A Question for you.....Would a few extra band\strips of rubber bands stretched(like the ones on your Altoids tin) or be attached with tape to like on the very bottom on the base of the axe as a extra fire source as i use a old cycle inner tube to keep my firesteel attached to my mora knife sheath and to be used as a extra fire source if needed, would that be a sensible idea?

  • I love my fuzzy arctic mittens!

  • dave did you pack a tarp for shelter? also what is the weight of your pack?

  • Pathfinder Cribs..LOL I can't wait for that one. It's gonna be awesome! Great Video Dave!!

  • Dave ... You are the man. All together how much does that winter pack weigh? No Poly Pro or Gore Tex for you? Is wool itchy?

  • Where is the pack goats brother? :)

  • Hay Dave that tinder fungus, is that chaga? Can you make tea out of it and when you have a headache you can get rid of it buy inhaling the smoke of the chaga mushroom?

  • what was the outside temp during the video?

  • you should try starting fires with the lint from a dryer. you find it around your house more and it sparks up from a fire steel realy easy. but good job.

  • @survivalpros55 u should try also using 100% paraffin wax(available were you findpreserves making supplies are sold/grocery store), a TP roll, and dryer lint. I use approx 6-7 tea candles worth of wax per roll. cut off approx 1/4", then cut a slit in the roll peeling it back and theres a wick. I found it to burn approx 17mins on it's own.

  • Nice video Dave,

Can u make a video ,how to use a wool blanket for sleeping in the wood in winter time!?

You said in a earlier video that you going to make one.

    It would be much appreciate.

    Thanks allot. mate !!!

  • Dave, I would recommend you try out a Hudson Bay point blanket if you haven't. 100% wool, and a worthy Canadian classic.

  • @panerudepon what's the difference between a wool blanket and that?

  • @trevor6744 It is a thicker and larger wool blanket than most. Their size makes them useful for many things - some people even make jackets with them.

  • @panerudepon I see.. thanks for the info!

  • Great Video! I like eastwing hatchets and axes. Poor sheep. I'm going to survive in the woods in iowa northeast iowa for 4 days. I'm getting some experience with winter wilderness survival. I have watched all of your vids. Any quick tips or helpful thoughts before I head out. I'm going for a 2 day light weight trip to see if i can put my gear/knowledge to practice.

  • Great vid Dave. The yurt looks good.

  • Is that anorak completely water proof? If you got into a downpour I mean. I've been soaking wet in the woods enough to highly value how waterproof a garment is. I know you've got the wool going for you (which is something I'm becoming very interested in), so I suppose even if you do get wet you will still be warm. I guess what I'm getting at is this: with this system in a downpour are you still comfortable/dry? What would you recommend for rain gear?

  • Dave I had a dream the other night that I was with you on an episode of Dual Survival...we were in the swamp with Cody of course and climbing a hill, all the sudden there was a house in front of us and you said "In a survival situation you need to see where you're going." Then you cut a piece of bamboo and shoved black powder and an artilery round in it, and tried to blow up the house, the round came out the back and Cody said, "What in the f&ck are you doing man?"

  • Question Dave: Greese wood... is that native to Ohio? How can it be identified?

Thank you for all the great videos!

  • I just realized what the opening for the Long Hunter videos reminds me of. The stop and go photos are like the little girl coming out of the well on "The Ring." LOL but a lot less creepy.

    Love this video series!

  • Great vid. I would have liked to see it all in the pack at the end, but not a big deal. I really would also like to see how the Pathfinder School land has changed since I was there back in Sept of 2010. I wants me a Yurt. :)

  • dave, using a directional antenna you should be able to get signal

  • Thanks again Dave for the video's! Your a natural born teacher!

  • Great video as always, Dave - thanks! Dead on about the 'wool' blankets - far too many are advertised as wool, but don't say they are blended with something else even though just about all of them are. Agree with you - cost of a 100% thick wool blanket is worth more than it's weight in gold.

  • That's no BS on the wool blankets... I have been trying for a LONG time to find a good 100% wool blanket. If anyone has a source for these please let me know. Thanks.

  • I actually sit through your intros now... for some reason they keep my interest each time.
