  • my favourite quote was when she was asked in an interview "Why do you think fans remain so loyal to Thin Lizzy after all this time?" and Philomena just goes "Because my Philip was the greatest rockstar in the world". End of.

Fair play Ms Lynott, you're doing a great job keeping Phil's memory alive.

  • Awgmjans got it right.I read her 2nd biography..the one where she didn't lie and came clean about those other two kds..It's called my boy..

  • Sooooooooooooo SAD! Peace to her and RIP PHIL!!! Heart still BROKEN after all these years!

  • What a beatiful interview!!! Thanx for posting :)

  • I think this mother is son of a brilliant mother I would be pround and I am pround of her

  • So So So Sad....The Day Teh Sun Wen Down...Love Him Forever, such a great man,one of a kind.....My heart!!! Tears....... R.I.P Forever Phil xxxxx

  • Her biography of Phil is wonderful, and almost unbearably moving at times.

  • Is anyone else crying? Or am I the sad loser? :S

  • Can you believe that after Phil she had another son and a daughter and gave them away for adopion.... Considering all the shit she went thru when Phil was born she ought to have known better! She seems like a nice lady but i guess she was pretty stupid tart when she was young.

  • @AWGMJANS think they were before Philip...Get your facts right

  • @mfealy You got it wrong dude. They were after Phil. Get your facts right

  • @AWGMJANS Cool you know it all

  • What a legend Phil's music means so much to me named my daughter Roisin I loved Rosin Dubh, Philomena what a lovely women take care phil will be looking after you.

  • Ive met Philomena, a few times and she a great friend , she really is one of the nicest people I ever met, I got to play Phils black mirror bass at her house, ill never forget that , have A look at .... Philomena Lynott talks about Phil Lynott on tv . Shes still amazing and beautiful .

  • so sorry

my son came to a sim

    so sad

    so sorry

  • Isn't she marvelous... not like the mother of famous people these days...

  • I met her one day in Dublin. She's a lovely, really sweet woman. Could have spent the day just talking to her! =) What a sweet, kind, lovely woman!!!

  • I'd give anything to bring him back. Anything at all.

  • @Abbeeee0 I've often said that if I could bring one man back from the dead, it'd be Phil. Even over Lennon.

  • Phil was an amazing human being, a loving father, a phenomenal musician, and from what I understand a great friend to anyone who knew him. But there's no denying that he ended up making some bad decisions with drugs and alcohol that assisted in his death. With that said, I wish his family and bandmates all the best and am sad that I will never be able to let Phil himself know what a profound impact his music has had on me as a musician and a person.

  • I really hope that Thin Lizzy and especially Phil eventually get the recognition they deserve for the influence they had on rock n roll and music as a whole. A lot of bands wouldn't be here today without them. And thanks to you Philomena for raising such an amazing son, I just wish we could have had him a little longer.

  • Philip's Mum is a lovely person.

  • @bartolemeo She's a very strong woman, she's incredible!!!

  • @mikejcroghan Rosín Dubh is a black rose - It means a girl with black hair !! In Ireland if a girl is said to be "dark " it refers to hair colour !! In fact Rosín is a little rose. any word ending in " ín" is a diminutive in gaelic

so I don't think that Phil was in anyway "A little black rose"

  • 25 years today. RIP Phil.

  • Behind very great man there is a great woman

  • very touching

  • Gosh, what a sweet woman, no wonder he was such a great guy. still miss him

    dearly.

  • all i know is i cried through the whole interveiw, this women loved her son no matter what he died of and she buried her child who birthed him thats a parent worst nightmare , what beautyful mom she is its sad to hear this very sad

  • brave mother; I saw Phil when he started out, at the Lanch Poly in Coventry. there but for the grace of God ...

  • I feel for this woman.

  • @killingjokefan1 As a mother myself, I do too. I cannot imagine having to bury one's child.

  • She is such a strong person. I really admire her, not only for this interview but for the work she still does today, And of course for giving birth to such a wonderful person and musician.

  • He may not have died of an overdose but the cotton poisoning destroys your lungs. I used to have heroin addicts lie with their heads off the bed face down to clear their lungs of the poisons that had accumulated, so maybe the drugs didn't kill him, but maybe they did.

  • @moles2000 You could also put that in the form of a question. "If Phil Lynott had not done drink and drugs and heroin and looked after himself do you think he might be alive today ?" I am not a fan of Cliff Richard but you can see what a bit of personal maintenance can do !!

  • Ey people,

Remember, That what killed him helped him to find the words for his lyrics. "That" what helps you flying high will kill you in the end. It's a choice. What do you want with your life? Live an ordinary life or climb the peaks. I always respect the people who climb these peaks, come back and tell/sing about their experiences without pointing my finger to the drugs.

RESPECT FOR YOU PHILL! Thanks for telling me about life and all of it's facets.

  • @01adhdave

What a weird comment, I admit some of his songs about drugs are among the best but are you trying to say that if it wasn't for drugs Phil would have been unable to write songs? Dublin, Clontarf Castle, Dancing In The Moonlight, Boys Are Back In Town, are you telling me Phil needed drugs to write those songs? And to compare drugs to peak which Phil came back from? Well Phil didn't come back down he fell of the Fucking "peak", If you made this comment about Cash I might understand.

  • Phil is to be admired no question but not because he took drugs. You seem to be a guy who is in to his drugs but even if I'm wrong I'l ask you. If you were to kill yourself or come close by taking drugs would anyone admire you? Would anyone say hey that guy really climbed some peaks in his life? Phil is remembered for his music and his kind gentle manner and again many of Phil's songs have nothing to do with drugs.

  • @nottoberemembered That's what you say! Not what i was trying to tell you.

  • What a lovely woman ! Phil is among the Gods of Rock...right up there at the front !

  • fucking needle

  • heartbreaking :'(

  • fucking drugs! they killed such fabullous man and still killing thousent of people! RIP Phil!!! STOP THE DRUGS ONCE FOR ALL!!!

  • @Grimasasmijeha Do you think that if they didn't take drugs, people like Elvis,Jimmy Hendrikx etc where still alive ? Watering their geraniums in the garden?

  • She is so right, these scum who bring this drug into our countries and kill our kids or turn them into thieves and whores need to be shot, these filthy dogs are making millions of dollars while they turn our towns, cities into social chaos and ruin our people,if you know any shoot them or give them up to the cops, they are down there with child molesters as far as i'm concerne. My best mate died from this evil and so did his 2 brothers his Italian ma lost her 3 sons to it,shes broken down with grief

  • One of the saddest things a mum must deal with, burying your son, especially a son who was so close to his ma,absolute terrible thing. God bless this woman and R.I.P Phil, gone but never forgotten

  • she's a lovely woman ,god bless her.

  • when he said to her " oh sorry ma"

that must have killed her inside

  • Philomena,s a great friend of mine she a wonderful lady wave had some great times can't wait to see her again , my condolences go out to Dennis he,ll be missed lv carl

  • What an amazing woman

  • an absolute lady!

  • Phil Lynott was a lucky man to have a Mother like Philomena. R.I.P. Phil.

  • God bless her

  • thanks so much for putting this video online, she is like a lot people have said a beautiful woman, miss phil soooooooooooo much, he was part of my childhood, and reminds me so much of my brother that passed away,

  • R.I.P Dennis 1/1/10

  • dennis has passed? thats such a shame. judging by how long he and philomena had been together they must have been very happy. wishes go out to philomena, god bless you. RIP Dennis

  • Yes. The funeral took place on Phil's 24th anniversary. It's a tough time for Philomena, for sure.

  • A very dignified woman.

  • things like that makes youtube great

  • philomena if you read this love lisen I would like to chat to you if possible don't know if you can do that I am a genuine Thin Lizzy fan and I'm a profesional bass giutarist without your son philips records I now would proberly be a very poor bass player I really want to thank you for your son he helped me learn a lot on the bass guitar and I honestly think without your son philip I would proberly be a auful player if it wasn't for him and I really thank you for makein sutch a wonderful man.

  • You are a wonderful, courageous woman. Wasn't he lucky to have you....

  • She gave birth to an Immortal Rock Legend God Bless Her

  • How old is Philomena now?

  • I met Phil and Scott when Thin Lizzy played the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in So. California back in the late 70's. Being the daughter of Dubliners, I was so proud of Thin Lizzy being one of the voices of rock'n'roll from Ireland. His mother gave a wonderful candid honest interview which is inspiring and timely. Drug abuse is life abuse and the effects ripple to hurt so many.

  • I asked her how to pronounce her last name and she said,"It rhymes with WHY NOT ".

  • Philomena is a such a lovely woman, she does so much to keep Lizzy's, but of course Phil's legacy alive.

Watching this interview is something else, a great depth interview, this is a woman talking about her son, legend that is Lynott. The man we know and love as the musician, but to hear from a mothers angle is just sad, good (no offense I do not hope!) and strong. Great interview.

  • she lives down the road from me....my brother is a musician andhas been to her house, offered advice and encouragement and signed a kind message on a pic of phil... she said "admire my son's music but not his lifestyle". wonderful woman and an amazing son. r.i.p phil! XXX

  • Was the interviewer Shay Healy? It was great to hear a woman speak so well and to have had an interviewer who let her speak.

  • He's got such a legacy in all the songs. My kids sing "The boys are back in town" and "I am just a cowboy, lonesome on the trail...." because they are such unviversal songs and his carismatic voice appeals to everyone. I miss him so much, saw him twice in Sweden, and they were such great concerts. I hope to see you up there when it's my turn. Damn the drugs that destroyed him.

  • Wow. Enormously touching interview, what a impressive and courageous and sweet woman. Brings a lump to the throat even after so many years have past.

Ms. Lynott, I interviewed your son on a rainy afternoon in Boston, ages ago... just a leisurely hour in an empty hotel room, he and I and a bottle... he was very kind, very clever, a quick wit and very nice to a young kid just getting started... I've never forgotten his generosity.

He was a lovely man, your son, a good soul.

  • I cant agree with you more. It's my hope and prayer that his mom is coping better. She's right the pain never does go away it just isn't as sharp. You never stop missing them. I also hope that she someday will be able to listen to his music. He will always be missed. RIP Phil Lynott may the Lord keep you.

  • What a wonderfull Mother and a great influence on his life.

    R.I.P Phil!

    ARE YOU OUT THERE ?!!!!!!!

  • What an angel....r.i.p phil.x

  • what a lovely careing mother, its reality now lots of mothers are experienceing heroin addiction with there kids, its no longer popstars that take it,

  • I sorry about your son, he was truly an amazing singer-songwriter and musician and he's the pride of the Irish.

  • She is a real Irish Mammy

  • What a fabulous lady. What a wonderful son. Phil Lynott was a gentleman - and a hugely talented musician.

  • What a lovely woman, what a super mother he had. Once a mother, always a mother, always there for you no matter what through thick and thin. Time is a healer and may this lovely lady eventually find peace.

  • Heroin's a killer! R.I.P Phill

  • What a shame Phil was so talented, loved all of his music. I think he had a fairly hard upbringing bless him. He was married to that guys daughter who did 'The Price is Right' - cant remember his name - anyone? RIP Phil play that guitar with Hendrix..........

  • R.I.P. Phil Lynott

  • it was initially pneumonia, but it was excess of heroin that led to blood poisoning liver kidney and heart failure

  • God bless her. Respect to the Lynott family. Phil is hugely missed.

  • a very moving video

  • Philomena sent a taped message to the Phil Lynott-Thin Lizzy tribute show in Toronto.Q-107 sponsors one each year.2008 they had 10 bands 20 minute sets for each with no song performed twice. She is a beautiful person. This event in Toronto is a must see for Lizzy fans.Come and enjoy in 2009.

  • were his kids adopted??

  • i dont think so he had a wife who left him shortly before he died

  • No his kids were his.

  • As a parent myself, I couldn't imagine the agony of losing a child.

  • much love all around for the lynott family

  • this is sad thin lizzy was awesome and phil was a great singer :/

  • RIP Phil :(

  • Have lost family, but to lose a baby? can't imagine. Admire this lady so much! Forever Out Here xx

  • Lovely lady and a lovely interview

Phil was a lucky person to have a mother like her.

  • Socialized Medicine, grand isn't it.

  • Philomema Lynott is the true definition of a lady.

  • mother love...to the very end!

  • Amazing lady indeed. . . .

  • Philomena you're a lovely woman - I met you at my grannies (May Beare RIP)100th birthday a few years back and your grandson was at my Dads 70th (Andy Beare)2 years ago.

  • shes extremely strong, I wish he was still around, he was a great man...he still is, and will never be forgotten!

  • I met her last year, we went on a trip to visit his grave, my mom emailed her to buy her autobiography for me. She sent it signed with her phone number and address. upon arrival in dublin, we phoned her and she invited us to her house. and she let me hold Phils bass, sayin its the 9th most expensive guitar in the world. i have pictures if people dont believe. I never got to see Phil as im only 17, but i am a huuuuge fan

  • i think she is one of the most decent, noble ladies i have ever seen!

  • Parents should never have to bury children.

I wonder if the same forces that drove him to make great music were the same ones that tormented him enough to use heroin.

A shame to lose such a musical talent.

  • sorry i love phil so much this video brings tears to my eyes and i was too young too ever see phil live. i was born the year after died. but i have to say he didnt die of heroin. it was pneumonia. im not a faggy youtube dick. i want the truth of phillip to be more widely known. yes he was a user but it wasnt that that killed him. he will live forever in music and our thoughts. philomena is a model parent with so much pain and the way she acts. she deserves the utmost respect.

  • Bless u Philomena. Phil died on my 20th birthday and even now, 22 years later, I miss him and his music. A Swedish paper wrote: "The Mozart of our time has passed away....."

  • A wondeful woman. Thin Lizzy's amazing music will live forever.

  • What a wonderful mom and a lovely woman.

  • I agree she is a lovley woman..Phil Lynott in my eyes was a god...sadly missed

  • Phils mum is gorgeous ...god bless ya Phil

  • What a beautiful woman and an incredible interview. I understand a little better but, it's still hard to accept. Thanks for posting this one.

  • god bless you my love. grief can be hard to bare and never leaves. all we can do is celebrate the lives and thanks god for them.

  • my brother met her by accident on a trip to ireland a few years ago. she was only to happy to talk about phil. great.

    atvmidlands UK

  • Shame what a nice lady, I love how she avoided the issue that his was smacked out on heroin. What a sad loss, Lizzy should have stayed together.

  • smacked out on heroin? he died of pneumonia u fool!? i hav met the woman and she is so honest, she will talk openly about his drug problem and gives talks to drug adicts now trying to convince them to get off it. how dare you say a bad word about the woman,

  • Just pneumonia? You are so naive it is almost cute. Aw shame.

  • naive?!its the truth, as i said the woman is honest about her sons drug use and yes it did play its part but to discribe him as "smacked out" is so disrespectful to not only a man who has passed away but to an irish man who had a world famous amount of talent. there was just no need for you to speak about anyone like that,

  • @freeeepeanuts18 dude I have me philomena lynott as well. no it was not heroin. she is the nicest woman u have ever met. i know more famous people than. he was very ill and the drugs didnt help. i have been in her home.

  • @freeeepeanuts18 Nearly everyone dies from pneumonia . It is the infection that kills you when all your other defenses have been compromised. In Phil's case it was his long term drugs and alcohol abuse that lead to his untimely demise. If you listen to Philomena's last sentence on the video you will hear her speak against governments that don't do enough to make sure that drugs are not available to ruin young lives . It is all a great shame and a terrible waste of lives .( illegal drugs )

  • @domnal i had pneumonia in december. i didn't die. granted i took all my antibiotics and i'm not a drug addict. but, i do agree that people who have compromised imune systems, will often succumb to pneumonia

  • what a wonderful lady!

  • Well said she is such a sincere lady, Ignore that foul mouthed sausage jockey, scumbag below his name speaks volumes about the retard he is! named himself that after his mother!

  • The family shot at 5:39 just kills me. What a BEAUTIFUL family. You can tell that Philip, for all of his faults, simply adored his little girls. I have two little girls of my own (as well as three boys), and I think I can understand how he felt.

  • what record was released?

  • thanks for your time to post this video. rip phil.

  • Thank you Philomena. Thank you so much.

  • Go and buy her book (My Boy), this woman went through A LOT to bring up her son, I respected Phil so much for his music but I have an even greater respect for his mother and what she did to bring him up, every fan of Phil & Lizzy owes her their respect and gratitude.

    God bless you Philomena

  • Thanks Brandywine!

I will definately buy it. In my youth I was such a big fan of Phil. and when i hear him toda I realise that I just miss Phil and his music so much.

He most have been one of the nicer superstars this world have seen.

I just love his personality his smile, everything.

Boomslangslinger... thanks a lot for posting the video.

  • A great man i follow thin lizzy music and i'm a rap artist rip phil much love to his mother a great woman

  • Check out his unreleased work with Junior Giscombe he was moving towards a more R & B feel in his solo career before he died.

  • He was a nice guy. I will always love him. Great artist and human.

  • A very dignified lady who was proud of her son. I am not what you would call religious but god bless both of you.

  • Very poignant. She's seems like a wonderful lady. RIP Phil.

  • The Kings mother.

  • Cool Mom. Reminds me of my own.

  • MOVING. He is truly a legend.

  • What a brilliant clip! Where did you get it from? An excerpt is on "The Rocker", Shay Healy's RTÉ TV documentary (Healy is a great TV maker). Philomena is a great lady.

  • what a great woman

  • She certainly is and and he was.

  • SHE IS AMAZING!! Her book 'MY BOY' is a wonderful treat for all us Lynott fans..

  • Yes it is!!!

    Still waiting for the movie!

  • Oh man I cried a bit...

  • Me, too. God bless you, Philomena. Nothing can be worse than losing a child at any age, but please know that there are millions of us who love him and will keep his memory alive. And we love you, too.

  • Sad:-(

  • What an incredibly strong woman she is. To do an interview one year after the death of a son, and to do it with such dignity & grace...simply powerful. Especially her answer to the last two questions. This should be what every parent watches when they have kids. God bless you Philomena.

  • Philomena, my heart is with you and your family. I have a boy who knows of the drug, he's alive, but not in a good place.

  • The CIA killed him, with their control of drugs.

    Gonna be a show down......

The CIA and MI6 are scum, they killed this great hero of mine. See from the wilderness.

    Blackie

  • Blackie, put the crack pipe down brother. And take the whole prozac, not just half. Get plenty of sleep and no acid, you'll be okay.

  • I do not take drugs of any kind thankyou very much.

However if you research and look into it you will find, to your horror, that MI6/CIA are responsible for 90% of the drug trade in the Western world.

Why do you think our poor troops are getting killed in Afghanistan? I wish it were not true.

  • Very Sad indeed!!!!! What an amazing Lady. I really love the way Phil treated his Mother. Typical of a true Irish man in the way he loved his family.

    RIP Phil!!!!!!!!!!

  • oh my this is so depresing, she seems to be such a nice lady, and its easy to see why Phil was such a cool guy

    RIP

  • Ah I see it was Paul Williams, the great spinmaster himself, on the late-late show at some stage. Early 90's I'm guessing from the interview and the background set in RTE. This country is full of self-serving posers and Williams is one of them.

  • WHo did the Interview? Sounded like Gabriel Egan but I doubt its him-they are supposed to me making a movie, but unfortunately it appears to be going down the oh-so-predictable route of "Philip, the little bullied black lad in racist 50's Dublin"...rather than concentrating on more pertinent matters

  • Um.... I don't know what interview you were watching but there's nothing to do with racism in this interview. Plus it's obviously January 3 1987.

  • I didn't say the Interview had anything to do with Racism, I'm saying the proposed movie has to do with Racism, which is a pity, cos Lynott was above that and so are most Irish people for that matter.

  • They're not making the movie. I read an interview with Scott Gorham and it's off. And if they were to make it, there would have to be at least a little bit of emphasis on his encounters with racism as a child - Ireland WAS an incredibly racist place in the 50s & 60s - Philip was an oddball to them.

  • This was a guy who was loved not just by his family but most of Ireland when I was growing up in Dublin. Great to see his proud Mum give tribute to him. Will one day see the movie that needs to be made.

    Dave

  • Excellent interview
