@quentinlargcoie No it's actually taken from a 3 CD set by Tony Htach. He also wrote Sportsnight and Crossroads among others. The great Mr Dankworth did compose the 'Tomorrow's World' theme though as well as the ORIGINAL Avengers theme in the Cathy Gale day's.
I was the subject of the Man Alive programme 'Can She Sing, does it matter' 1969?'. I have the original on video but would love friends and family to see it on UTube. Any suggestions as to how this can happen?
If I am not mistaken, my father, Simon Wadleigh, was one of a few directors who worked on this series. Personally, I am very happy to see a tiny glimpse of history of what he has worked on.
does anybody know where i can get an old episode of man alive called the average way of life i think its from about 1969-1971 i know its a long shot but my parents and sisters were on this show any help would be great
@unlikeanyotherhuman Yes I remember him giving low marks. 'Yes you're a well groomed lad - good song - confident delivery ' 'So I'm going to award you -one'
The 'skinheads' documentary exists, as clips from it are used all the time eg, in the BBC's recent British Style Genius series. I saw the Man Alive episode when it was first broadcast and remember it to this day. The programmes are apparently being transferred to DVD, but as there were hundreds of them, this particular episode may not be one of them.
Was that the one where one of the greaser guys says ;" who says crime don't pay ?, I nicked 30 quid and got fined 20 so there's a tenner profit " .......lmfao , then when asked by the presenter why they were called the Sons of Silence another repied ; " well we're Sons ain't we and we're ... uhhh....ummm....Silent " ....rofl
'Man Alive' was a weekly programme which tackled lots of social issues in a way that no UK documentary appears any longer to do. Its liberal tendencies were more appropriate to dealing with some ssues of real oppression (ie the pre-67 illegal status of homosexuals) and, if re-incarnated would hopefully tackle today's new oppressed (those who live hopeless, violent lives on sink estates but are not part of a recognised 'oppressed minority' on ethnic or religious grounds).
Ooops, didn't see your comment when I added mine re New Faces. Yes, he was the original 'Mr Nasty' in an era which was far more polite on the TV than now. He cited the adverse reaction he received from members of the public, who were affronted by his acid tongue, as one of the reasons why he left the UK.
My god, Tony Hatch (although I didn't know he wrote Man Alive tune)is one of my favourite writers - but I'd no idea he wrote Neighbours/Mr &Mrs yuk.A far cry from his exceptional Downtown!
Tony Hatch went to live in Australia in the 1970s with his wife, singer Jackie Trent, which is when he composed the Neighbours theme. I remember him, as a kid, as the 'baddie' - alternating with fellow 'baddie' Nina Myskow - on the 70s talent show 'New Faces'
wasn't this written by Johnnie Dankworth?

Man Alive was shown on BBC2 from 1965 to 1982 as far as I know.
Esther Rantzen and Desmond Wilcox were among the presenters/reporters on the series during that time.

there used to be an accordion version of this theme tune: was fantastic
brussbear 3 years ago
Yes there is this version on youtube which fronted an early version of the original program
ewaf88 3 years ago
Sorry, I meant a harmonica version (it sounded very Larry Addler-esque and had a hint of poignancy about it, whereas this version was quite upbeat).

Unbelievable tune, so apt for the programme, up beat. Don't make em like this any more!!

You're right as unfortuntely the composer - Tony Hatch - went on to write the theme for Neighbours and Mr & Mrs
