@Trashfished Just so you know, that old rumor that Mama Cass choked to death eating a ham sandwich has been proven to be false about a week after she died. The ham sandwich by her bed was never touched, and the coroners report was simply that her heart quit. Yes, a heart attack. The coroner determined there was nothing obstructing her air passage at the time of her death. Do a little research before yucking it up over someones death based on a rumor.
@gman10911 Thank you! I can't believe the myth about Cass's death is still being perpetuated 38 years later. I'm reading a biography on her at the moment called: Dream a little dream; the life of Cass Elliot. I thought I was a fan but there was so much stuff I didn't know. The amount of people she effected was amazing.
my teacher played this song in class while everyone was working and when they heard this song there were comments like " what the hell?" or wtf or they were giggling about how it sounded funny. omgosh kids of my generation these days....:/
Can someone tell me if california dream is from the mamas and the papas or is it a cover of bobby womack's. I'm think its the mamas and the papas though.
@atomicpunk48 isn't it interesting the way old fat cass and the skinny chick really made this group a success. the so called men just helped out y'know bringing in stuff from the truck, sweeping the stage doing the laundry etc.....its a real shame that a oversize ham sandwich took it all away!
@atfatw You may be right. I don't know, I was a little young at the time. But wasn't John Phillips the one responsible for writing all their biggest hits? I'd give him a little credit.
John Phillips was the principle songwriter and arranger for their group. A gifted musican though, by all accounts--including his own--not an easy man to live with. His autobiography, Papa John, is hair-raising.
@4Topwood Thanks for the tip. I am a reader and if I get time, I'll have to try to find that one. I remember all the horror stories from the later part of his life. He died relatively young. 65 I think.
@lilmiceman i agree. also if we lived in the 60's, we wouldn't be able to take pride in listening to songs like this, because everyone would be listening to it.
God why the heck did you send me to earth in the 90's instead of year 5000 where inmortality is going to be invented and life is going to be extremly easy
❤♫•*❤♫•*❤♫•*❤Baby i think i would be going for a lot of walks with the dog if we were together and we could go to Jenns church along the way ha ha ha ❤♫•*❤♫•*❤♫•*❤
I remember sitting on the tarmac at Tan San Nhut, mid '69. Somebody had this on one of those portable cassette tape players. We were waiting for chopper to some shithole fire base near Plieku. He played this over and over. Don't know why i remember this, but every time i have heard this since i can remember the heat of that airfield. Must have been August.
@pjriordan1 wow, dont know why im telling you this but your comment moved me. you must have had interesting life, lots of memories and lived in a time thats been highlighted by many but only known by those who really lived it. x :)
As a non native english speaker I always thought this song had a deep meaning and social critique. It's always been associated with anti-war songs and whatnot, very vietname era-esque. I'm sort of dissapointed it's about a dude missing his warm weather.
A popular song by The Mamas & the Papas, it was first released in 1965. The song is #89 in Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The lyrics of the song are about a man in a cold winter landscape longing for the warmth of California.
In Winter1966 I found myself longing for CA sun; I was in Detroit and it was COLD. I had grown up in Anaheim--back when it was full of orange groves and real people. Miss that.
@mangledinal wow,u were so lucky to have experienced that life,if only the world was still like that in the posotive ways. people tried hard to make a difference but were brought down and unheard. my dad lived here in edinburgh in those days and really believed in the hippys and those who wanted simpler, peaceful lives. maybe through listening to him and his music, id always wished we lived in america, haha the fantasy of an ideal life that once was. x
@jackbob4 Thank you for your response. I was lucky to live in CA in the late 50s and up to June 1966. Disneyland opened in 1955 and we moved to Anaheim in Oct. 1956. I remember orange groves everywhere and the smelt pots used to warm the trees in winter. I could see the top of Sleeping Beauty's castle from my bedroom window. In the summer, every nite, Disneyland put on the most fantastic fireworks display. We weren't far from the beaches or from the mountains. Michigan was different.
I remeber my dad saying he moved from California to New Jersey when he married my mom in 1967, the year this song came out. He said he could really relate to the song, as New Jersey would seem bitter cold to a CA native. He moved back to California shortly after they moved there - so my mom was forced to follow. Now when I here this song can't help but think of that.
can't beat the colors painted by the recording techniques of the 60's. For anyone saying todays music doesn't compare please look up the band Papercuts, they capture these analog vibes perfectly.
@HoboHero13 It doesn't matter if they did or not, what they are pointing out (including me) is that you can use technology because its there, but not make it your life. If you didn't have all this infrastructure based on technology like in the 60's, you obviously wouldn't be using technology, but you wouldn't care because you just would't. I am only a teenager, but I do agree with the fact that this society is getting increasingly ignorant.
