The people who say the soundtrack, for "Cant Stop The Music and Xanadu were great, but the movies themselves, well were just the movies themselves. Both had casting issues "Music" with a disco film with June Havoc in the cast, and Although the soundtrack number he did with Olivia Newton John was superb, This was not the type of picture that Gene Kelly appeared in
The Village People had a few hits during the disco era, and this would have been acceptable if it was a movie to showcase their own act,but I just couldnt figure out why the other cast members were cast in their roles in the film. June Havoc and Bruce Jenner and The Ritchie Family in the same picture??
I'm surprised this isn't a midnight movie by now. Written up by the Medved Brothers in The Hollywood Hall of Shame; and alluded to by Michael & Jane Stern in The Encyclopedia of Bad Taste. I've never seen it, only read about it. Can only imagine what the experience of watching it is like on the Plan-9-o-meter.
By 1980 people were getting sick of Disco. Disco was becoming a dirty word in the music and radio business. Radio stations were beginning to weed out the excessive disco on the radio. Bumper stickers with "Disco Sucks" were showing up on car bumpers. Disco was pretty much washed up by the time of the "Disco Demolition" night at a Chicago baseball game, which a stack of disco records were to be blown up. Drunk rock fans threw records like frisbees, thrashed the field and the game was called.
I have to admit, when I was a kid I freakin' loved this movie. I though it was silly, fun, the music was great, but what did I know I was, 8...9 years old? Rather than "The Movie that Started the Eighties", my Mom says this is 'The Movie that Killed the Seventies'. And to make things worse, it was the vortex of some sort of lame out-of-Cincinnati type marketing scheme. Department stores (not Saks or Neimans) helped "sponsor" or "promote"...or something...the movie. Retail, back then, was still about showmanship. But this may have been the 'show' that ended it all (and a lot of family-owned department stores). Now, I can see why...

@taffy8davenport Thanks for the feedback taffy. I had read about the fact that this came out right at the end of the disco fad hence it's commercial failure. Having only ever read about it as an infamous turkey (both commercial and critical) I was suprised to see, at least from the trailer, what look like very high production values. I'd always read that Myra Brecenridge was a flop in every sense of the word too but when I came to watch it myself I was shocked at how good it actually is.
@Kemster79 I think if this had been made a year or two earlier than it was, it might have made it. I've read some reviews of the movie at the time (all bad), but it still could have made money if it had come out earlier. I've heard the same thing about MB, but haven't seen that one yet.
@Kemster79 The story was nice about how The Village People were formed and such but agree with you Disco was over Victor Willis orig Cop and song writer was smart to pull out of it, Allan Carr wanted to get another hit after his fame with Grease but sadly this ruined him, lost quite a bit of money.
@Kemster79 horrible marketing and timing, Travolta in Saturday Night Fever was the bar to pass, no one really wanted to know the true story of the Village People kinda sad it was a pretty decent film esp on the big screen. Allan Carr fresh off Grease wanted another musical it had it but bad acting, sorry VPs your not great actors, and Perrine was affordable eye candy, Bruce Jenner was someone with notiability, others were good people just bad fit imop
you may criticize, but YOU Can't Stop the Music!!! it lives on forever and ever. this is easily one of the top-ten all-time most glamorous films. it's even better today than in 1980. people are so dull now. where's the fun and fashion? it's in this fantastic film for all to enjoy, except for the uptight lames who think Times Square is better off now. F - U all to hell.

@Oceanpacifica1968 actually this movie bombed at the box office, grossing less than $3 million on its $20 million dollar budget, Plus it won the first razzie for worst picture
@philaman1972 'Empire Strikes Back' is in itself a campy paroxysm of American Imperialism turned into an intergalactic pseudo-operetta. This movie is honest at least.
I actually forced myself to sit through this once... it *is* bad. No fault of the Village People, because the songs weren't bad. (The ending of the title song is friggin' ENDLESS, though.) It's just a terrible movie overall.
@NyeTunes I saw this on the big screen wasnt all that bad, the night i went people dressed up as The VP and the music was great because the sound system in the show place was great. Whats sad is Victor who wrote most of the songs for the movie quit i think he was VP even though simpson has done a great job. The ending was long your right abt that!! =)
being a huge vp fan it kills me 2 say but this movie was just awful..i did however buy the album and still own it..the music was fantastic..but the movie? no..wouldn't take money 2 watch it again, lol......
@madeluis71 sorry no its not ever seen "Show boat" or Hollywood on Parade these films or Astaire and Rodgers wow greatest shows ever as musicals or Gene Kelly singin in the rain those were the days when dances did it, nailed it and made films great pioneers of great musicals imop
I just got the DVD. This film may have been destroyed by the critics back in the day, and I know it is campy, cheesy, corny, you name it... And still, it is FANTASTIC! The music is awesome! Fun to watch and remember those unforgettably colorful days. Long live the Village People!
Disco was a time when "Gay" still meant Happy. Please someone post this whole movie on youtube.. Part 1,2,3,4 etc. I have been waiting 30 years to see it again. The Last time I saw it is when it came out in 1980 in the movie theatre. Please post the whole movie !!
Good movie not the best but if you liked the Village people it was cool on the big screen, as far anything else enjoy the music leave the lifestyle alone, its there business and Gods questions they will be asked not you. Allan Carr god rest his soul who produced Grease was a very kind person and he was asked a lot of why and why I think he was a fan and it was the Disco age!!! Lol VP still tours and does pretty good for 30 years going wow scary also VP give Victor Willis his due he is VP alsoray
@OEKCVB Did Allan Carr have anything to do with "Grease 2"? I mean, G2 is NOWHERE near as bad as this was, but I'd just be curious.
I'm actually surprised Robert Stigwood didn't have something to do with this - he had a very unlucky streak. (Sgt. Pepper, Times Square, Grease 2, AND Staying Alive. Yikes.)
@NyeTunes hello, yes Allan co-produced with Stigwood major mistake ince they were to sign Travolta and Newton John to Grease 2 but scripts were changed and money was the issue so Travolta and John passed. Carr took a big beatin for this and studios were NOT happy with the reviews or draw of G2 sad decent movie.
I can't believe in this day an age people are still asking that tired question. Who gives a crap which VP members were gay? For the record...all of them and none of them...
@Furrymandal I agree I was very lucky to have met two of them back in 79, 81 both were very kind I was 12, 14 in age I asked Glenn Hughes in 79 if he was gay? he said he liked girls and said he kept his business behind the doors, and gave me a high five and had a soda with me at a NYC sidewalk cafe truly a kind man, wrote to me for many years, sadly as you know he passed away. David Scar Hodo was crazy he had girls left and right on him he told me he liked both but preferred men, so i agree w u
Heh! I never knew that... I find that hard to adopt, because if I snicker about the Village People or Foghat having a "Dennison mustache," they won't grab what I mean right away...
and wouldn't a "horseshoe mustache" have to be one of those that goes, like, all the way down to the chin?
(This is all going to be put into a coffee-table book on mustaches, I know it)
Beautiful! Epic! Village People were amazing; indeed, most acts in the 70s were beyond amazing... Queen, Kiss, The Jackson 5, The Osmonds, Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Sweet, Abba... where did all that glamour and talent go?
I actually saw this when it was in theaters in '81! It was a silly piece of fluff, and as camp as a row of tents, but the music was fun. Disco was on it's last gasp, so I'm not surprised that it failed so miserably.
How on earth did civilization make it through the 80's?

taffy8davenport 1 year ago
@Kemster79 The story was nice about how The Village People were formed and such but agree with you Disco was over Victor Willis orig Cop and song writer was smart to pull out of it, Allan Carr wanted to get another hit after his fame with Grease but sadly this ruined him, lost quite a bit of money.
OEKCVB 1 year ago
@Kemster79 horrible marketing and timing, Travolta in Saturday Night Fever was the bar to pass, no one really wanted to know the true story of the Village People kinda sad it was a pretty decent film esp on the big screen. Allan Carr fresh off Grease wanted another musical it had it but bad acting, sorry VPs your not great actors, and Perrine was affordable eye candy, Bruce Jenner was someone with notiability, others were good people just bad fit imop

@OEKCVB Thanks mate. I read that half the $20 million budget was blown on global marketing!

you may criticize, but YOU Can't Stop the Music!!! it lives on forever and ever. this is easily one of the top-ten all-time most glamorous films. it's even better today than in 1980. people are so dull now. where's the fun and fashion? it's in this fantastic film for all to enjoy, except for the uptight lames who think Times Square is better off now. F - U all to hell.

It's hard to believe 'Empire Strikes Back' was released the same year as this cheesy, campy paroxysm of movie-making.

@philaman1972 I think this movie grossed more than Empire Strikes Back, you asshole.
Oceanpacifica1968 9 months ago
@Oceanpacifica1968 actually this movie bombed at the box office, grossing less than $3 million on its $20 million dollar budget, Plus it won the first razzie for worst picture
comedyfan3000 8 months ago
@philaman1972 'Empire Strikes Back' is in itself a campy paroxysm of American Imperialism turned into an intergalactic pseudo-operetta. This movie is honest at least.

im so glad i was born in the 70s...live grew in the 80s...you cant stop the music, real music. im blessed

I actually forced myself to sit through this once... it *is* bad. No fault of the Village People, because the songs weren't bad. (The ending of the title song is friggin' ENDLESS, though.) It's just a terrible movie overall.
NyeTunes 1 year ago
@NyeTunes I saw this on the big screen wasnt all that bad, the night i went people dressed up as The VP and the music was great because the sound system in the show place was great. Whats sad is Victor who wrote most of the songs for the movie quit i think he was VP even though simpson has done a great job. The ending was long your right abt that!! =)

I just got the DVD. This film may have been destroyed by the critics back in the day, and I know it is campy, cheesy, corny, you name it... And still, it is FANTASTIC! The music is awesome! Fun to watch and remember those unforgettably colorful days. Long live the Village People!

I own it too. It was camp and fun. It was destroyed by the anti-disco backlash. Too bad because it was a riot.

It's not Gay. It's Disco !!

OEKCVB 2 years ago
@OEKCVB Did Allan Carr have anything to do with "Grease 2"? I mean, G2 is NOWHERE near as bad as this was, but I'd just be curious.
I'm actually surprised Robert Stigwood didn't have something to do with this - he had a very unlucky streak. (Sgt. Pepper, Times Square, Grease 2, AND Staying Alive. Yikes.)
NyeTunes 1 year ago
@NyeTunes hello, yes Allan co-produced with Stigwood major mistake ince they were to sign Travolta and Newton John to Grease 2 but scripts were changed and money was the issue so Travolta and John passed. Carr took a big beatin for this and studios were NOT happy with the reviews or draw of G2 sad decent movie.
OEKCVB 1 year ago
@NyeTunes Robert Stigwood was too busy ruining Times Square when this was being made. They both came out in the same year don't forget.

I can't believe in this day an age people are still asking that tired question. Who gives a crap which VP members were gay? For the record...all of them and none of them...
Furrymandal 2 years ago 20
@Furrymandal I agree I was very lucky to have met two of them back in 79, 81 both were very kind I was 12, 14 in age I asked Glenn Hughes in 79 if he was gay? he said he liked girls and said he kept his business behind the doors, and gave me a high five and had a soda with me at a NYC sidewalk cafe truly a kind man, wrote to me for many years, sadly as you know he passed away. David Scar Hodo was crazy he had girls left and right on him he told me he liked both but preferred men, so i agree w u

It's the handlebar mustaches that confuse people....
Villagejonesy 2 years ago
Not wanting to split hairs (facial) but that moustache is called either a "Dennison" or a "Horseshoe" . Handle bar moustaches turn up...
Furrymandal 2 years ago

I actually saw this when it was in theaters in '81! It was a silly piece of fluff, and as camp as a row of tents, but the music was fun. Disco was on it's last gasp, so I'm not surprised that it failed so miserably.
