@mattazPKpro I just wanted to see if this was real or someone was having a laugh. This is an ok vid for people wanting to learn. Oh, and suck my dick you back door merchant.
wow, if u need a vid on how to drive, or if you can't just get in a car and drive it (manual or auto) then you don't deserve to be on the road. If driving isn't instinctual, then stay off the fucking road, I bet my life over 90% of all crashes are caused by someone who had to learn to drive.
@flattoprulez Exactly what I was trying to get at (ok I was a bit angry with it), was that when I learnt, it was a natural process. After a couple of jump starts I had it down. No lessons or anything. Just that first time in the car. Only school I went to was the local racing school which fortifies the skills you already know. Sorry everyone that I came off like an asshole but I meant what I said.
@gurmumum depends on what u mean by better... it takes practice to learn to drive a stick shift but imo it's more fun because u have more control over it i guess... automatics are boring to drive
@ryancrules623 umm thats not true a manual trans takes about 1 second more to shift gear an auto trans does it instantly giviing it the edge in straight away areas so dont come to me and say manule trans is faster...... unless ur manual is extremely fast then ur right, but other than that ur not right
@BlackH3art77 well my frend has a car that is a 0-60 9 seconds on the internet, but he is very good at manual and is able to get it to 0-60 in 7 seconds. also my other frend has a car thats auto but has a manual option. (dont know else how to explain it) and wen he does 0-60 manually, it goes faster.
@ryancrules623 um thats bull shit i own 2 manule cars a bmw z4 and an audi tt and btw im an enginer so dont come with that shit and say manual is faster than auto. the time it takes to shift 1 gear manually is about 3-3.5sec depending how much experince you've had...
@ryancrules623 thats shit thats probably because 1 the car has better acceleration 2 its probably tuned 3 the body is made out of carbon fiber which makes the car lighter or 4 itts mor aero dynamic.
@BlackH3art77 no. u dont understand wat im saying, he has only 1 car. not 2. this one car he has, (pontiac g6) has an automatic transmission, but also a manual control option. wen using manual, the car accelerates faster
u dont necessarily ALWAYS have to give it gas to get the car moving, i can slowly let out the clutch on my car, without applying any gas, as long as im not on an uphill start, nice vid btw
Hey Bob...How do i use the clutch and gas pedal without the car turns off?please help me i allways do wrong when im driving in traffic with my dad..:S..its very annoying;S
@OmarIbnAlKhattab I have a suggestion, either learn some proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, so people can actually understand what you are asking, OR better yet, if you're driving with your dad...why can't he help you?
Break= BRAKE. Yes, if you are coming to a complete stop you have to press the clutch in otherwise it will stall. However to save your brake pads and give them a longer life you can slow down using the transmission by downshifting. I'm not the best standard driver, but I can down-shift and up-shift pretty well. I find starting the biggest pain in the ass a lot of the time though so I have started to hate stop signs.
dude its sooo much better for ur car to just brake. transmissions cost so much more money than brake pads do. its bad for ur transmission to down shift so its better to just brake not downshift.
What do you think race-car drivers do? I know it costs a lot more but transmissions are a lot more durable than brakepads. Also, if you just brake it wears out your clutch.
@TheVampyreCat braking does not wear out the clutch. what are you talking about... Slyy80 is correct. Its better to brake and wear your pads that only cost around 60 bucks instead of downshifting and putting all that extra force on your transmission which could cost up to a thousand dollars..
@TheFly6235 When I wrote braking wears out you clutch it was a typo, I meant it wears out your brake pads. With that aside, I say no, neither of you are correct. If you are a crappy manual driver, then yeah its a good idea to just brake BUT STILL PUT IT IN THE APPROPRIATE GEAR BEFORE TURNING (USUALLY 2ND). If you can downshift correctly it hardly puts any stress on you transmission. I have not heard of anyone actually significantly damaging their car from a downshift anyway.
@TheVampyreCat extra wear on the clutch if you ask me. Depending on the sharpness of the turn you could keep it in gear. there is no need to switch gears if you don't have to. And, Brakes are much cheaper, and much much easier to replace than a clutch.. just think about it.
@TheFly6235 I don't need to think about it, I already have, I know that brakes are cheaper and easier to replace than a clutch but a clutch is much more durable than brakes by a long shot so there shoudn't be any reason to be worried about wearing your clutch out (unless you're a noob driver). Anyway, yes you can keep it in gear but if your are actually turning a corner (not a curve) its foolish to have it in a higher gear than 3rd, even that is pushing it in some instances.
Double clutching is a safe technic that saves ur transmission and brakes, for those just starting to learn how to use a clutch, once u get a handle of it, watch some videos of double clutching downshift, it takes all the pressure off ur trans and gears while saving ur brakes, many say it is the proper way to drive a manual. With out double clutching, using ur gears to slow down will hurt your tranny and u'll feel it to.
or wait yes u have to press on the clutch!! haha sori... cuz for me when im slowing down i put it on neutral then i break. then while im moving and i want to accelerate i put it on 2nd or 3rd gear depending on my speed!!!
depends, if your coming to an emergency yes because your car is gunna try to stop as fast as possible, if you dont hit the clutch on an emergency stop, your not gunna stop on time(and you know what that means). As far as a casual stop you can just use your break till your at a low RPM then use your clutch so ur car does not start to stall. ( if u need more road to cover while stopping, shift to a lower gear around 1.5k rpms instead of stopping and repeat the action above.
Manuals let you actually connect with the vehicle. You don't just push the gas an go. Also, you can get better fuel economy. And you can gain more speed by going near redline, unlike automatics, they only go so much before they shift to the next gear.
you can stop the car in any gear just put the clutch in .... just like you can start in just about any gear ,you just have to know how to do the clutch otherwise you will stall
Not really. Sometimes, if I come to a stale red light, I shift it to 1st and keep the clutch in while holding the break, stop and wait for the light to change.
idiot do u see that there is a less than more than symbol?? it says stick shift is better than automatic ... maybe go to school?? and i drive a stick shift car lol.
@AudiROCKS - not really. The fastest cars use automatic shifts with a stall converter. much more faster than a stick shift. I have a 6 speed manual Camaro, which is fun on the road, but at the drag strip, a well built auto is always faster.
Whilst the car is moving you should never have it in neutral, particularly whilst going downhill. Going downhill in neutral will mean the car is pretty much in freefall with engine breaking being eliminated and engine noise will decrease making it harder for anyone to hear you coming. When coming to a stop you should just put the clutch in whilst leaving it in gear, there is absolutely no need to put it in neutral, you are just giving yourself more work to do.
When I go into reverse , it usually goes too fast? Do you recommend pushing the clutch in only halfway and only slightly give gas? I know its riding the clutch but it goes too fast when i put it in reverse...
Yes I would recommend that. Although you may be riding the clutch, it will only be for a brief period of time. Clutches are generally very strong and can last for years. My manual car is 10 years old and has never needed a new clutch. In all these videos people seem to exagerate the damage done by "riding the clutch". I see people do it all the time by lifting the clutch up slightly whilst on a hill, effectively using it as a handbrake, i dont recommend THIS,but it shows how strong clutches are.
and the correct way would be? .... i would like to know if you have found a good video that you think is better and how it differs.... let me know please :)
We love to drive automatic, we invented it in the first place. Also we invented autopilot too, easy cruising. We even had an autopilot to the moon, and back. All you have to do is press the buttons.
well yea but yu'll use up your cluch in a week doing that(thats the first thing i learned lol). for short stops puting it into neutrle is not recomended because you wouldnt be ready for an emergency(like if a car swerves towerds you) as a general rule we want to release the cluch as soon as possible so that way yu'l have more cluch life
You've just failed your UK driving test. You came to a complete stop in neutral, which is known as coasting and will eliminate engine braking and reduce steering control. It can also be particularly dangerous on steep hills. You should be changing down gears when coming to a stop, letting the clutch up each time you shift up a gear and then coming to a stop in first gear with the brakes and clutch.
Its generally a bad idea to downshift into first . . . Unless you live in a very hilly area its not really necessary to downshift everytime you slow down. You can argue whatever you want but when ur stopping in traffic to a red light there is no reason you must downshift in a flat area. Just coast in gear and pop it in neutral just before you stop.
No reason to stop in neutral: I always stop in gear (eg: second, third) and use cluctch control not to stall the car... when i'm still i select first again
If i'm travelling at higher speeds and I need to stop fast, of course I downshift (not to first, but to second) to reduce braking space.
If a car hits you while you're in neutral you have no engine braking.
This is the way we are taught in Italy, where almost everyone drives sticks.
Ive always heard sitting with the clutch pressed is bad so I dont do it. I just sit at red lights in neutral with the brakes pushed. If you get hit all the damage will happen in less than a second. You wont have time to engage 1st so it really doesn't matter.
there's nothing bad in sitting with the clutch pressed... i totally agree with suichi...if u get hit all the damage will happen in LESS THAN A SEC... that's why u'd better stay in gear, if something happen u wont have to worry about shifting...
Shuichi982: I'm confused. If you're using "clutch control" in order to prevent the car from stalling, it sounds a bit like you might be "slipping the clutch" which will increase the wear on your clutch.
When I'm at a stop light, I'll slip the car in neutral and keep my foot on the brake until I'm ready to start moving again. Besides, having your foot on the brake pedal is much more effective than engine braking if a car were to hit you from behind.
Jerome, the point is: if i have to stop, I just don't slip the car in neutral, i j brake and while i'm braking (so my foot is on the brake pedal too) i press down the cluctch...
Imagine you have to make an emergency stop: you may have no time to select neutral.
Shuichi982: Fair enough, but what if you were approaching a red light and there were no other cars around you. Would you really downshift all the way to first or second gear or would you simply put the car into neutral and use your brakes?
The only time I'll downshift when approaching a red light is when I anticipate it will change to green shortly otherwise, there's no need to put additional wear on my clutch by downshifting.
Well, i find easier not to mind the shifter while i'm braking. I stay in the same gear I had before braking, pressing the clutch down. Only when I've come to a complete stop I select first again to be ready to go...
If I need a more poweful brake, yes, I downshift to second, even with no cars around ( in a block change, from 4th to 2nd, eg; in that situation going to neutral woudn't be less effective in terms of braking space)
Bit more to it than that if you've only ever driven manuals. Like going for the clutch pedal and to change gear although it is more just getting used it.
Just mean't very few people in the uk like driving Auto compared to the US.
Nothing auto about standard transmission? sorry don't get what you mean, "standard" transmission is manual over here and Auto transmission is a cost option. Not sure what it is anywhere else though.
I work in the motor trade so am fairly experienced driving both but like most brits prefer manual (stick shift).
manuel trans is also cheaper in the US, but most people are lazy and dont know how to drive or dont want to drive a manuel. so auto pretty much becomes a standard with most american drivers
Basically anytime you push the clutch pedal down you and burning it so the only time you downshift is when you want to slow down but not make a complete stop. When you want to make a complete stop just slow down and put it in neutral
just lettin u know that thats not safe because if u just put it in nuetral and press the brake annd come to a stop, a car could cut in front of you so you shoulddo it a safer way
I am a driving instructor from the UK all you people stalling the car... Press the clutch down sooner maybe 2-3 car lengths, and for you people after smoother gear changing press the clutch down quick let it up slow ALWAYS DOWN FAST UP SLOW! Maybe count to 3 or 4 hope this helps :-)
if you cant drive manual gearbox you fail your driving exam. you can then choose to take the exam with automatic gearbox, but then you are not allowed to drive manual gearbox until you take the exam with an manual gear box... Oh no! his is america, and there EVERYBODY is drivng automatic, and its leagal to hit the traffic with manual gearbox even if you had your exam in an automatic! LOOOOSERS!
when stopping put the car in neutral... but when slowing down from 4th gear to turn right downshift to 3rd or go to neutral from 4th then halfway through the turn shift to 2nd or 3rd...
doesn't shifting into neutral before coming to a complete stop waste more gas? isn't it better to downshift? for example, if you shift into neutral at 35 MPH and then start breaking, does it waste more gas?
You are using less gas if you are in neutral. Downshifting isn't good for your engine, clutch and tranny. Braking ofcourse uses up your brakes but brakes are easier and cheapr than whats mentioned above.
there is nothing wrong with downshifting, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to do it. you have to do it right, or you'll wear your clutch quickly. do it right, and it'll last plenty long enough. i've put almost 80,000 miles on my current clutch and have had zero problems. that's with normal driving, drag racing, road racing, winter driving etc.
as long as you do it right, you won't have any problems at all.
I shift at 7000 rpm from 1st to 5th. is that bad?
MangoSmoothie16 8 months ago 4
@MangoSmoothie16 hell yea, ure wasting gas!! and your puttin stress on ur engine! shift around 2500-3000rpm lmao

When I go into reverse , it usually goes too fast? Do you recommend pushing the clutch in only halfway and only slightly give gas? I know its riding the clutch but it goes too fast when i put it in reverse...
RKO1988 2 years ago
Yes I would recommend that. Although you may be riding the clutch, it will only be for a brief period of time. Clutches are generally very strong and can last for years. My manual car is 10 years old and has never needed a new clutch. In all these videos people seem to exagerate the damage done by "riding the clutch". I see people do it all the time by lifting the clutch up slightly whilst on a hill, effectively using it as a handbrake, i dont recommend THIS,but it shows how strong clutches are.

You don't have to give the car gas. If you slowly let off the clutch the car will start at a slow speed.
waqaskayani96 2 years ago
yeah what waqaskayani96 said, u dont need to give it gas, the car will go at slow speed when u let go of the clutch slowly

We love to drive automatic, we invented it in the first place. Also we invented autopilot too, easy cruising. We even had an autopilot to the moon, and back. All you have to do is press the buttons.
hungvan 2 years ago
Well when your comming to a stop cant you just press the clutch in and then down shift to first?
PoliceWillProtect 3 years ago
well yea but yu'll use up your cluch in a week doing that(thats the first thing i learned lol). for short stops puting it into neutrle is not recomended because you wouldnt be ready for an emergency(like if a car swerves towerds you) as a general rule we want to release the cluch as soon as possible so that way yu'l have more cluch life

youve also failed your irish driving test
househero400 3 years ago
You've just failed your UK driving test. You came to a complete stop in neutral, which is known as coasting and will eliminate engine braking and reduce steering control. It can also be particularly dangerous on steep hills. You should be changing down gears when coming to a stop, letting the clutch up each time you shift up a gear and then coming to a stop in first gear with the brakes and clutch.
ricardocarey 3 years ago 2
Its generally a bad idea to downshift into first . . . Unless you live in a very hilly area its not really necessary to downshift everytime you slow down. You can argue whatever you want but when ur stopping in traffic to a red light there is no reason you must downshift in a flat area. Just coast in gear and pop it in neutral just before you stop.
thegarbageman21 3 years ago
No reason to stop in neutral: I always stop in gear (eg: second, third) and use cluctch control not to stall the car... when i'm still i select first again
If i'm travelling at higher speeds and I need to stop fast, of course I downshift (not to first, but to second) to reduce braking space.
If a car hits you while you're in neutral you have no engine braking.
This is the way we are taught in Italy, where almost everyone drives sticks.
Shuichi982 3 years ago
Ive always heard sitting with the clutch pressed is bad so I dont do it. I just sit at red lights in neutral with the brakes pushed. If you get hit all the damage will happen in less than a second. You wont have time to engage 1st so it really doesn't matter.
thegarbageman21 3 years ago
there's nothing bad in sitting with the clutch pressed... i totally agree with suichi...if u get hit all the damage will happen in LESS THAN A SEC... that's why u'd better stay in gear, if something happen u wont have to worry about shifting...
jimmetalx87 3 years ago
Shuichi982: I'm confused. If you're using "clutch control" in order to prevent the car from stalling, it sounds a bit like you might be "slipping the clutch" which will increase the wear on your clutch.
When I'm at a stop light, I'll slip the car in neutral and keep my foot on the brake until I'm ready to start moving again. Besides, having your foot on the brake pedal is much more effective than engine braking if a car were to hit you from behind.
jeromebamley 3 years ago
Jerome, the point is: if i have to stop, I just don't slip the car in neutral, i j brake and while i'm braking (so my foot is on the brake pedal too) i press down the cluctch...
Imagine you have to make an emergency stop: you may have no time to select neutral.
Shuichi982 3 years ago
Shuichi982: Fair enough, but what if you were approaching a red light and there were no other cars around you. Would you really downshift all the way to first or second gear or would you simply put the car into neutral and use your brakes?
The only time I'll downshift when approaching a red light is when I anticipate it will change to green shortly otherwise, there's no need to put additional wear on my clutch by downshifting.
jeromebamley 3 years ago
Well, i find easier not to mind the shifter while i'm braking. I stay in the same gear I had before braking, pressing the clutch down. Only when I've come to a complete stop I select first again to be ready to go...
If I need a more poweful brake, yes, I downshift to second, even with no cars around ( in a block change, from 4th to 2nd, eg; in that situation going to neutral woudn't be less effective in terms of braking space)
Additional wear on the clucth? Maybe! :)

I've been driving manual for about 6 years now and I believe I'm great at it, but is it a bad idea to let the clutch out all the way in reverse?

Press down on the pedal to go faster?
Darkkish 3 years ago
Bit more to it than that if you've only ever driven manuals. Like going for the clutch pedal and to change gear although it is more just getting used it.
Just mean't very few people in the uk like driving Auto compared to the US.
Whipit8rapture 3 years ago
But there is nothing auto about a "Standard" transmission... I've never heard anyone British call a manual transmission "Auto"
Darkkish 3 years ago
Nothing auto about standard transmission? sorry don't get what you mean, "standard" transmission is manual over here and Auto transmission is a cost option. Not sure what it is anywhere else though.
I work in the motor trade so am fairly experienced driving both but like most brits prefer manual (stick shift).
Whipit8rapture 3 years ago
Right, I see what you're saying. Good point! (But I doubt anybody would have too much trouble learning to drive an automatic ;P)
Darkkish 3 years ago
manuel trans is also cheaper in the US, but most people are lazy and dont know how to drive or dont want to drive a manuel. so auto pretty much becomes a standard with most american drivers

im a beginner also and my question is what are the appropriate times to down shift?
SHADOWS113 3 years ago
if you're going up a hill you should down shift to 3rd gear so you can get up the hill without your engine struggling.
Downshifting around a long turn is important too, because your revs will drop if you don't down shift, and if they drop below idol you will stall.
If you're stopping at a stop sign from 5th gear, you could go 4th-3rd-2nd-1st, or 5th-N.
JobeMinacum 3 years ago
Basically anytime you push the clutch pedal down you and burning it so the only time you downshift is when you want to slow down but not make a complete stop. When you want to make a complete stop just slow down and put it in neutral
BFizzi719 3 years ago
yeh but if u gotta get the fuck goin' it ain't gonna happen in neutral

I am a driving instructor from the UK all you people stalling the car... Press the clutch down sooner maybe 2-3 car lengths, and for you people after smoother gear changing press the clutch down quick let it up slow ALWAYS DOWN FAST UP SLOW! Maybe count to 3 or 4 hope this helps :-)

im confused bout downshifting i can start the car and drive it but when i slow down and about to stop i sometimes kill it
what am i doing wrong?????
can somebody tell me
Ermin06 3 years ago
I'm guessing that you don't have your foot down on the clutch while downshifting so you don't "kill it."
Racr4Lyfe 3 years ago
if you cant drive manual gearbox you fail your driving exam. you can then choose to take the exam with automatic gearbox, but then you are not allowed to drive manual gearbox until you take the exam with an manual gear box... Oh no! his is america, and there EVERYBODY is drivng automatic, and its leagal to hit the traffic with manual gearbox even if you had your exam in an automatic! LOOOOSERS!

labizz 3 years ago
when stopping put the car in neutral... but when slowing down from 4th gear to turn right downshift to 3rd or go to neutral from 4th then halfway through the turn shift to 2nd or 3rd...
yea its confusing but youll get it!!:)
punkrboi 3 years ago
doesn't shifting into neutral before coming to a complete stop waste more gas? isn't it better to downshift? for example, if you shift into neutral at 35 MPH and then start breaking, does it waste more gas?
CarLunatic 3 years ago
You are using less gas if you are in neutral. Downshifting isn't good for your engine, clutch and tranny. Braking ofcourse uses up your brakes but brakes are easier and cheapr than whats mentioned above.
sunnylotto 3 years ago
there is nothing wrong with downshifting, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to do it. you have to do it right, or you'll wear your clutch quickly. do it right, and it'll last plenty long enough. i've put almost 80,000 miles on my current clutch and have had zero problems. that's with normal driving, drag racing, road racing, winter driving etc.
as long as you do it right, you won't have any problems at all.
