  • It's a tune he wrote called I Just Way Hello, obviously based on Giant Steps (up a half step?). He recorded it on the album Estate, and wrote it in 1981.

  • This is definitely "Giant steps", what I was looking for! I'm happy now.

However, does anyone know why the heck this video say "I just say hello"?

  • One of my favorite Pianist! Inspiring touch ...

  • The name of this tune is "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane. A great piece of music. I don't understand how they failed to mention this! But nonetheless, "Mike P" is among the greatest of the greats.,, "was" that is, he passed away somewhat recently, only 36 or 7 years old. Amazing pianist. He was so tiny he often posed sitting on someone's lap, such as another musician in the group.

  • The Drummer was really inspired by Steve Gadd ...

  • Qualcuno mi sa dire che live è questo..e se è stato inciso in LP???

  • I'm lstening to this thinking about what Michel said: he didn't like jamming...

  • A giant of music

  • this IS giant steps. great music man!

  • He is JAZZ.

  • R.I.P

  • p.s.: if you like ´giant steps´ watch also michel camilo´s version.

  • so difficult to play a solo on this, but michel does it with a obviousness that´s simply breath-taking. Thank´s for the video, i never heard petrucciani play this tune before!

  • Snif.......Snif........THE KING!!!

  • thanks Michael for your wonderfull music and playing. From an italian fan

  • what an amazing pianist... and yea, that's def. Giant Steps.

  • A small man with a giant talent.

  • that's "giant step"...amazing michel rest in peace

  • like an octopus playing the piano, when u close up his fingers while playing the piano

  • comme il le disait je ne suis pas un genie mais c est quatre heures de clavier par jour cedisque demontre une technique ahurissante helas la section rythmique n est pas a la hauteur

  • Coltrane released his album "Giant Steps" in 1959 (about) and this record is still a sensation, it had taken me 2 years to pick up this tune on my piano. Petrucciani is just a phenomenal musician, thanks

  • What is he, like 18 here or something?

  • Amazing

  • True urtoman, he is Music

  • i have no words, how great IS this man?

    nature is extraordinary cruel sometimes.

R.I.P. Michel, you'll be remembered as long music will exists.

  • You have no idea how much I dig this!!!!

  • Giant Steps superb solo!

  • It is 'Giant Steps'....DUH!!!

  • Sounds like Giant Steps to me

  • this is Giant Steps. anyone who can't hear that needs to tune up his jazz ear a bit more.

all that aside, petrucciani is at his best here, what a talent.

  • p.s. i know it's not really Giant Steps, but rather "I Just Say Hello", but it's 99% a ripoff of the former.

  • A giant in a little body

  • giant steps not i just to say hello

  • Thanks, but isn't that what I said in the description.

  • @donnythejazz

Reading is a long lost skill these days. Anyway, thanks so much for posting. I discovered this guy via Steve Gadd and I was instantly amazed.

  • Anyone who has ever struggled through those changes knows how brilliant his playing is.

  • Wonderfull timing and lines !!

  • sencillamente único.

  • Just give thanks that this was captured on video. I saw MP once live - and the experience was wonderful.

  • Petrucciani, el piano te quedaba chico... gloria al amestro para siempre!!

  • Petrucciani's phrasing is deadly and this solo is an perfect exampel of his genius.

  • the title is wrong , it is "giant steps"

  • I did say that in my comments!

  • Amazing chops! I wonder what his stretch was. I doubt that he could stretch more than an octave but who could tell? It shows that you don't have to have hands like Peterson to play two-handed piano.

  • he could span an 11th. his hands were the only big part of him...i think.

  • Petrucciani is just awesome! He also looks funny, because he's so small compared to the size of the grand piano..
