  • Your videos are very encouraging! Good to see your progress. I was just looking at my 6 wk old locs wishing I had started the 2 strand twists bigger&then saw your other videos and realised that they'll thicken up! :-)

  • @DaughtaOfGod I felt the same way when I started mine. I thought my locks were going to be really thin but now they are so thick. Much thicker than I thought they would be. Don't worry give them time to mature.

  • I Thought They Would Be Longer Because You Had Some Long Hair.

  • @markow3508 me too I was a bit disappointed at the time but it did grow fast

  • i cant really tell bt did u start ur locs by the interlocking process or are those comb coils?

  • @blackkiddwhitekidd no a different techinque that combined backcombing and twisting.

  • I like that you have triangles in front that's cute

  • you have some beautiful hair:) i just started mine 12/31/2011 i started them myself.

  • Hi Tbey, whats some good advice for starter locs im getting mine tommorow and im pretty nervous! did you accessorize them in any way or whats some helpful info on products or anything of that nature that will be good for me.

  • @klassykia08 The 1st 3 months I cover my hair w/ hair wraps & wore big earrings. After that I started playing with curls mostly roller sets. And I would braid them in french braids going to the back also. I started playing in makeup more as well. Using colorful eyeshadows to give me more of a feminine look. Use simple water based products stay away from heavier products that don't wash out. Cover your hair every night. That's the basics. Congrats on starting locs you are going to love them!

  • Have no worries, all the gaps in your hair, will close up as it thickens..I had mines for 6 years..but Saturday I did the chop chop..............Make sure you dont put lots of jells in the hair..it will collect lots of lint and dirt, and once that lint gets in the loc, you cant get it out. preferably use olive oil and water when retwisting.

  • @black7jesus Yes they have...this vid is 3 years old now and I am very please with how they've grown. Thanks for the advice I use very simple products all water based so they wash out clean. Why did you cut them?

  • did you have to cut you hair?

  • @Tianna65 No I did not my hair was natural.

  • Hi, I just got locs today. I'm pretty anxious because I'm not used to my hair being this flat. How long did it take for your locs to thicken up? I'm not worried about how long it will take to loc (I know that'll be a while).

  • @nas02s Around 3 months they started to thicken up.

  • @tbey82 Awesome, not long at all! Thanks. I'm not so anxious anymore, I guess it was just the initial shock. I'm excited about my journey now! :)

  • ok thanks a lot for your response now all i have to do is find someone who actually cares about the well being of my hair and not just the money. Well your hair is lovely God Bless.

  • @PnC43007 Yes it is difficult to find someone who actually cares about hair more than the money.

  • hi tbey LOVE YOUR LOCS! im considering getting locs and i wanted to know what is the best parting method to start with. i want something similar to yours and i know you have grid style parting but it looks different in the front (triangular?) is that something you asked for or did it just work out that way? and also did your parting method determine how your hair came out?

  • @PnC43007 My loctician did the parting the way he felt would look good on me. I can't take any credit for it. It's just bricks everywhere else except for the first two rows in the front where he made them triangular. It's funny because I hated that at first. But I'm used to it now. I feel the parts just gave it a good base and it grew nicely from there.

  • you looked better before :D

  • @TheAleksej99 lol you are entitled to your opinion. I feel I look a lot better now and I feel a lot better about myself as well. But thank you for watching.

  • @tbey82 nuthin :D

  • I'm glad I ran across your video. I just came from my loctician and could not believe how short and thin my starter loc are. I guess I have to give them time, but for now I'm not sure what to do with them. I'm so used to long twist extensions.

  • @msneeta77 it'll take time for to adjust to the new look. give it time...it'll grow on you.

  • i love your hair,&your beautiful,umm... i have a question i havent had a perm in 2 and half months now&i been wanting locs 4 years now,&i decided that i want to get locs,so how long do i have to wait to get started,i know someone that can help me get started&everything, but i wanna know how long do i have to wait to start?

  • @georgiafinestpeach I would wait until your natural hair is at least 3 inches long.

  • @tbey82 ok thanx 4 the advice i appreciate it

  • 2days ago i restarted my loc process as the 1st attempt i used the back combin n crochet method n ended out combin it out after 2 months b/c it was way to messy n i didnt like d partin. The texture to your hair is very similar to mine only my front is a bit more straight but im glad to see the comb coil method works and looks great in d long run (i have seen more recent uploads.) How did you styll your hair in the actual comb coils im scared if i do anything with mine them they will unravel.

  • @aallis416 Actually my hair wasn't started with the comb coil method...it was started with a backcombing twisting method. But my daughter's locs are started with the comb coil method and I styled her hair from day one. I shouldn't come undone. I felt styling the comb coils helped her locks stay in place as long as it was cover at night. I don't think she ever had a problem with unraveling.

  • Sexy lips ;)

  • how did you get all your dreads to lay back

  • @20wsmith Lol they didn't. Only when they were fresh from the salon they would lay...I would tie them down at night and it would look okay for a while but then they would start to stick up as the days passed.

  • how long was your hair before you decided 2 lock?

  • @shyshybaby08 I never measured but I believe about 7 inches or so

  • I went to a professional for the first 6 months before I started to do them myself but it was only out of fear I was going to do something wrong. But you can definitely do it yourself

  • Your starter locs were looking good. I just started mine too about a month ago

  • @LegalEagle000Congrats! Trust me you will love them!

  • did you do this your self

  • @lovegame96 No I went to De Lux Gallery in Brooklyn

  • @tbey82 How is De Lux Gallery? pricey? moderate?...I was thinking about going there...do you know if they interlock?

  • @TheTruPoet They are the pricey side because they specialize in locs only but worth it. No they do not interlock.

  • @tbey82 Hello, your starter locs are beautiful! I just got my starter locs last week. My locktician started them off as two strand twist. Do you maintain your own locs? I really dont want to spend $70 every four weeks for maintenance...I want to learn how to maintain them on my own!

  • Check out dreadcap.com. Love your locks

  • @tbey Tell me again on how you moisturize your hair? And how often?

  • @1220msnetta On average once a week or so. Sometime more sometimes less it just depends how my hair feels. less is more product leads to build up.

  • @tbey What did you say you use to re-twsist your hair when some locks seems to come undone? I re twisted 2 of my sons locks with the locking gel, was I suppose to do that? I dried it with a blow dryer. I'm wondering if I should wash it, when the lady does a full re twist on his hair, that way if some come loose, the lady can fix them. What you think? I'm scared to wash it right now with being just a week now since it was done. How often should I oil his scalp?

  • @1220msnetta Yes it fine to retwist the ones that come loose but it's not necessary to add more product to the hair because the hair wasn't washed just use water in a spray bottle and retwist the one coming undone. His hair has only been twisted a week you should have to do so much. At first locks will be frizzy some will come undone it's does take time for it to mature. I would only oil his scalp when necessary. It's not something that needs to be done everyday.

  • @tbey where can I see a recent picture of your dreads now? The person that done my son hair took her 1 hour and 40 minutes, but his hair was only 3 and a half inches long. His parts are small and even. He will have allot of dreads with the full look. I paid 40.00 to start them...LOL (But she works from home, so no booth rent...

  • Ok, thanks for the reply. I have some other questions for you. Ok, my son now has has his hair similar to this. He just started his locks about a week ago. How often do you spritz your locks? And when should I use oil sheen? His hair was twisted using the Jamaican Locking Gel. The mango and Lime stuff....

  • @1220msnetta I have loads of videos check out my channel I have from day one up until last month or so. I never used oil sheen on my locks. If my locks feel dry I would use some type of oil. Like Olive oil or Almond oil you can try Nyle oil too. But I use it very sparingly normally diluted in water and put in a spray bottle.

  • kute.... ckeck my video....

  • Hi, Why does your hair lay back that way? Is it interlocked? I'm new to locs, son is getting them this weekend?

  • @1220msnetta my hair was started with a method of backcombing and twisting. It's a unique method done at my salon De Lux Gallery.

  • Love you dreads. check out dreadcap.com

  • how long was your hair when you got it locked?

  • @iaffiong about 6-8 inches long

  • damn ur dreads look good. wish mines can stay lookn that fresh

  • damn you pretty =p

  • @unlikeab Thanks :-)

  • i like the way your locs are parted at the front! with a triangular way! how is that workin out for ya?

  • @Joakimbrian1 Thank you :) At first I didn't like the parts in the front because I couldn't make straight parts but now almost 2 years later it has grown on me and make my locks that much more different than others.

  • No one should pay more than 40 bucks to get there hair twisted. You are not getting a weave or anything sewn in so clearly 170 is just crazy. My loctician charges 35. I no girls that will do it for 20 bucks but they are not pros so i leave them alone.

  • @demarioda1 I would pay more to take care of my natural hair than a weave any day. My loctician took 3 1/2 hours to lock my hair. Time is money & I believe in paying for quality. You can go the cheap route if you like it's your hair I dont knock it, but I believe when it comes to a permanent descision like locks you shouldn't cut corners just to save a buck.

  • @tbey82 You have beautiful locks so i don't think the money is an issue. I was just saying that i have never heard of anyone charging that much for starter locks. About $80 being the most expensive. It probably depends on where you live. In Memphis where i live there are lots of locticians. And i can't believe you get your hair did in 3 1/2 hours. My loctician takes forever. HOLLA

  • @demarioda1 Thank you! He took 3 1/2 hours to start them. It only takes him about 30-45min to retwist it. He's really good. Yeah I'm in NY everythng in expensive. The going rate for a retwist around here is 80.00 so it depends on where you go.

  • what are the starter locs called... and how much did the place charge u

  • @tomizrad no special name just starter locks. I paid a grip...about 170.00 to get my started. But it was worth it.

  • My hair looks just like yours after i get it twisted and your hair is way longer than mine. She must be twistin the hell out of those dreadies.

  • Yes He did lol. It actually speeded up the process. I didn't experience any shrinkage during my process, probably because he did it from the start.

  • They are lookin good .check me out. subscribe

  • Did they cut your hair shorter or is it because they twisted your hair which made it short?

  • No I didn't cut it. That just how short it became after it was twisted.

  • D' Lovely

  • I don't think I ever saw this video. You have come such a long way in your journey sis. :)

  • @MzCJA I know...i can't believe I made it thru it to this far. I never could keep the same hair style longer than a month. I surprised myself!

  • 0:47 sexi gud loc wit ya journey ma

  • looks like we have similar texture of hair. what did you use to start them? and what works best for you?

  • My loctician used pink queen helen stying gel to retwist it you can check out my 16 month update it show the products I use.

  • are you suppose to wear a doo rag every night?

  • Yes I do! It prevents you locks from getting any lint or debris stuck in them.

  • ******************5*********

  • Thanks shaggy! That's where my locks began lol!

  • Do dread's make your hair grow faster? I'm just thinking about rock'n them.

  • Well...not really, but it appears to because you don't loose any hair. Any hair that may fall out daily from brushing or combing remain in the lock. So it appears to grow faster, but it's really the same rate but because you don't loose hair it grows longer.

  • My vid is up check it out when u get a chance...that place is friggin' awesome!!! Thanks so much 4 the reference. Mike did mine n he was hilarious! great vibe, artwork...props! Happy Holidays 2 u and your beautiful family!

  • your locks are so beautiful how do they look so perfect i havent seen this once on youtube

  • Thank you so much :) They have come a long way since this vid.

  • i see below you have a hater he didntmess you over. but i did notice in all your vids your like frizz ahhhh frizz and in my opinion and its just an opinion. was just you were just a little impatient like me im always in the mirror looking for locked ones haha but i saw the 14 month and my my my you and your daughter have great locks i kinda favor yours more because of your hair color its a shiny black which is what im going for but that guy that started your locks hats off to him he did great

  • Yes I hated the frizzy stage and yes I was very impatient lol. But I got thru it! Yes my hair is very dark. I've hated it my whole life. I always like lighter hair (like my daughters) but I'm starting to like my natural hair color more and more. As far as the "hater" everyone is entitled to their own opinion, he/she has that "long hair=beauty" mentality. No one can tell me my hair isn't beautiful. I know it is lol! How far along are you?

  • not far at all i mean my hai is pretty long because i started with longer hair but i had to take mine down recenty because the sizes were too small so i got them done on sunday and i got them like yours i got triangle parts at the fron and medium parts all around your locks was how i wanted mine so i got them just like them so im 3 days in ill be posted my vid in a couple weeks. and yes darker hair i like better but you and your daughters locks are beautiful i keep loocking at your 14 month

  • and looking at your parts like dam mine will come out good too *8)

  • That's cool! So you'll be my lock twin :) I subscribed to you so I'll see when you post!

  • :) thanks ill be updating in a couple weeks after 2010 :) im expecting my twin to comment first

  • Ma' i know this video is old but for them to have started your dreads they messed you over...my hair was less than half the length of yours and they look longer...the more locs you have the longer they look...the one who dreaded should of took their time and dreaded more rows

  • Actually he did an amazing job on my "locks" He took his time and cared for my hair making sure that every lock is the same size and my parts are neat. Making sure my locks will last a lifetime. They have matured beautifully! Hair grows that what is does so what if it was short when it was started. My locks mature faster than many who's hair is the same texture as mine. My locks are healthy, full, thick, lush and will last me a lifetime. Length comes with time. I'm 100% satisfied with his work.

  • I really like your videos, they are very helpful and inspiring, I too live in BK and just got my hair done by Glenn of Delux Gallery this past Sat. I'm glad to know that I can view your videos and get an idea of what to expect in the months to come with my hair.. Again... thanks for sharing you and your daughters have beautiful hair ;-)

  • Thanks for watching my vids! Isn't Glen awsome? He is so talented. I don't live in BK I'm from Long Island but I go to get my hair done there. Did you already know about the Glen or did you go because of my vids?

  • I met Glenn on Myspace probably like 2 years ago through a mutual friend and I always admired his work.

  • I have many friends who are loc'd also who have been encouraging me for the longest to get my hair done.. Then your vids really motivated me ;-)

  • well i have 4 days down so far and i've gotten many compliments, trying to post my pic here but its not going thru.

  • Well I see your display pic and it looks really good! I'm going to subscribe to your channel so I can see you updates. Congrats on starting your journey!

  • Thanks!!

  • Do you know what method and product your loctican used to achieve the tightness of the locks?

  • He did a method of backcombing and twisting

  • your dreads look good. how often did you get them re-twisted when you first started out? and i see that you started your dreads out thin, but as the months went by, did they get thicker?

  • For the first 5 or 6 months I got them retwisted once a month when I was going to my loctican. Now that I maintain them myself every two weeks . Yes they gotten thicker as time went by. Now they are fuller. I like it more now.

  • how many locs do u have?

  • 105

  • how long was your hair when you first started your locs?

i mean my natural hair is 4 inches or jus about that and I wanna start my locs but I'm afraid it's gonna be too short

  • My hair was somewhere between 6-7 inches long. After they started them they were about 3 inches so you locks will be short when you retwist but it'll probably fit you

  • Your hair has come a long ways in one year..Ilove your locs,I'm glad you stuck it out..Congrats on your one year!!!!!

  • Thank you.

  • I am startin and maintainin my own locs. Yes its alot of work but in due time it will pay off!!! I wish I was never introduced 2 a relaxer...I think if I had natural hair the process wud b sooo much easier but I am certainly on my way...

  • Yes it is a lot of work at first but it's gets easier as time passes. It is hard to transition from relaxed to natural because you are accustomed to hair laying down flat and smooth and natural hair is the exact opposite, but you learn to work with you natural texture.

  • Gorgeous locs.

    Blessings,

    Cinnamonslices

  • Thank you. I'm a year in now :)

  • Girl your locks are the bomb, I'm starting my dreads now so hopefully they come out nice did twist them yourself ?

  • No I got them started by a professional and I went to him for the first 5-6 months. Now I retwist them myself.

  • Your hair is gorgeous! I've been doing research and I came across your videos...I want to Loc my hair (myself)..I've already tried a few and they look good...watching your videos gave more confidence to be good to my hair! Thanx...I'm a lil nervous but xcited!!!! I just wanted to know if it is convienent as people say or is it a long process..what should I xpect?

  • You should do it :) It is a journey to say the least. There is a lot of maintaince in the beginning but becomes less and less overtime. You'll be frustrated at times and others times you'll love it. But in the end you will be happy with you locks.

  • first off, I love your locs. But i have a question. I want to begin my locks and im planning on growing my hair out for about 5 months. i am so terrified of this transition, but yet i want it really badly...is it worth it? and did your locs grow fast?

  • The transition from permed to natural wasn't a big deal to me. I just cut off the relaxed hair and wore it short until I was able to braid it. The locking process can be trying, but I feel it's worth it. I don't think my locks grew fast but I think it locked pretty quickly.

  • cool vdo, i did my 1st vdo today. still trying to learn the editing part, but hey what can i do...

  • I'm horrible at editing. I really don't think people care that much though.

  • BEAUTIFUL LOCK

  • i two strand twisted my beginner locs this past sun-however, after looking at your vids, i turned them into comb coils. when i started my first locs back in 2001, i used the 2 strand twist method and it took my hair almost a full yr to lock. i'm gonna see if this method is faster. question-do you just tie the coils down at night to keep the disturbance of them to a minimum?

  • Yes I cover my hair every night, but my hair wasn't started with comb coils. It was started with a technique that combined back combing and twisting together. My hair still isn't completely locked either. I think it'll be another couple of months before that. I do believe comb coils come out a lot neater than two strand twists. I started my daughter's w/ comb coils and her hair has locked faster than mine. I think hair texture plays a major role in how fast your hair locks not the method.

  • Wow you started with alot of hair Tie.

  • Yeah I thought I did...but once it was twisted it became soooo short :( I think now my locks look the length my hair was before I started locking.

  • How are dreds doing? Your initial dreds look good, I've made an appointment to have my done in about 2 weeks. So, I am researching info, if there is anything you can share, some advice or something as to what kind of products are advisable to use etc.

  • I stopped perming my hair when I was 19 then I permed it for a couple of months in 2006 been natural ever since.

  • wats da problem wen dey arent locked??

  • The goal is for the hair to lock. Before it locked the hair is still loose hair and can unravel and come undone.

  • forget the hair you look good..

  • Looks real nice. Those are some big parts they made.

  • Thank you :) They made my locks on the thicker side with neat even boxes. All my locks will be the same size.

  • i want dreads but im going bald! im white so it would look crap anyway.

  • I know someone who has locks and is bald on top...he wears a hat all the time ;)

  • you're gorgeous

    and you're locs are too

how many locs do you have?

  • my friend counted 110 and my sister counted 114 so somewhere in between lol

  • lolz

i just started mine yesterday and I've got 54 (not exactly the number i wanted, i would have been happier with 78 or so, but i'm going to stick with em)

i was just trying to get an idea of how they will turn out...thanks

  • I understand exactly what you mean. I wanted my much smaller like 150 or so but my loctician told me to trust him and so far I like how they look. I'm I got them thicker because i believe if I had gotten them done thinner they would break off later.

  • hey how long did it take for your hair to lock up? just got my hair twisted

  • They are still locking now. It's has been six months so far. Some are locked some aren't

  • they are beautiful

  • I just got some starters done. Did you get the same thing just using the gel and twistin them up?

  • No it was a diffrent technique that supposed to lock your hair faster. I think it's a combination of backcombing and twising.

  • you purty

  • Looks good...where did you go to get it done?

  • I got it done at De Lux Gallery in BK on Fulton

  • Thanks..I just moved back to bk and been looking for the right place to get my starter locs done...do you have a number for them?

  • would those be considered medium sized dreads, or small?

  • I would say medium. I've seen much smaller.

  • thanks

but whats the price range for getting them started?

  • It depends where you go. To get it done proffessionally it could range from 50-150 depending where you go.

  • i like the size and shape and neatness of your thats wat am aiming for. did mine nov. 7.08 and i had some creme ends and i hate the way the ends look but am gonna go get a crochet needle to c wat i can do for them!

  • Thank you. Congrats on starting your locs.

  • when you first got locs, did you like them?

  • I got them 8/23/08 I liked the way my loctican did them, but I didn't like how they looked on me. I felt like a boy. But it's growing on me. I'm starting to like them now.

  • they look really good. HANG IN THERE!! it can be a bumpy ride getting them established/locked. But once they're locked tight, you are going to absolutely love them. Stay strong. You're very pretty already.

  • Thank you. You're beautiful yourself! It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. I only a few bad hair days and it always a couple of days before my retwist. When are you posting another video?

  • I started mine on the same day too.

  • Afrikan Goddes

  • i like yours alot! they're gonna be nice! can't wait to see more vids!!

  • forget it i found the website. your locs look great :)

  • Hair is looking nice.

  • Your Locs are going to be BEAUTIFUL!!!! Can't wait to see them progress Be Blessed Queen!!!

  • Very nice, congrats! Your hair looks great!!! welcome to the journey

  • Your locs look real nice and neat, better than mine when i first started i had a perm, did you start you and your little girl hair on the same day?

  • Thank you. I started my daughter's on 08/02/08. She gave me the strenght to start mine. I been thinking about it a long time, but never did it. I'm getting mine done proffesionally because it's difficult for me to do my own hair.
