Its harder to understand the world when one is misinformed. we should try to look both sides always and make decisions , obviously this guy have only one side of the facts.

Hyman Rickover-- the first Jew in modern times to reach the rank of Admiral, and a man of honour for most of his life, yet was caught embezzeling towards the end of it.   • The pope is selected by an assembly of his peers, a convocation, and is usually in his sixties or seventies when chosen, after a long, worthy life. The Dalai Lama was chosen by one person at the age of five, and no one is ever allowed to question that, even when he behaves abysmally. There is a big difference.

  • The Dalai Lama is NOT AN ELECTED leader; At the age of 5 he was SELECTED as the next religeous leader to replace the then religeous leader after he dies. Isn't the Pope the head of the Catholic church? And doesn't he remain in that position until his death? And by the way, the next Dalai Lama has already been chosen. The Dalai Lama is NOT a political leader. Since his enthronement, you've had 10 (ten) elected Presidents; Lyndon Johnson & Gerald Ford were not elected.

  • Actually, President Johnson was elected with over 60% of the vote in 1964, and as Vice President, he was sworn in as President after President Kennedy was assassinated. This was a constitutional procedure. It is true Gerald Ford was never on a winning national ticket, but he was confirmed by Congress.

  • The Dalai Lama does indeed lead all the Tibetans in exile in India. He is their supreme leader. Before 1959, of course, he also ruled in Tibet. So he now has only 100,000 Tibetans under his direct rule but he still will not countenance any disagreement whatsoever, and has used his power to ban a much loved 400 year old spiritual practice. This has sickening ramifications not just in the Tibetan exile community, which is now in turmoil, but in Tibet itself, neighbouring countries, and the West.

The British Monarch was once considered the head of the Anglican church, but now: There is no single Anglican Church with universal juridical authority, since each national or regional church has full autonomy. Lastly, Tibet is NOT a free nation and does not govern itself but is oppressed by China, thus there is no theocracy there, but a form of communism.

  • I fail to see the connection with Ms. Palin and SNL. Regardless of what the ridiculous Dalai Lama has done, we both know it's not remotely as horrible as the invasion by communist China. Also, comparing the Lama's rule as less fair and less representative of the people's will than the various leaders of Russia is laughable.   • This has nothing to do with China. It is just showing how people are being denied religious freedom because they happen to disagree with the Dalai Lama's ban of their spiritual practice. It shows how they have nowhere to turn -- the Dalai Lama is the sole and unelected leader, both political and spiritual, of Tibetans in exile. The mixture of religion and politics and divine right of kings versus individuals has never worked since the Middle Ages -- people always end up persecuted and suffering.

  • There is a huge schism in Tibetan exile community today caused by the Dalai Lama's ban of a beloved religious practice (practiced by his own holy teachers and even previously by DL himself) and the ensuing persecution of those who refuse to obey his ban. And the DL has not replied to one single letter, petition or request -- he preaches tolerance and dialogue in the West, but does not pratice what he preaches at home in the Tibetan exile community in India. Dalai Lama, give religious freedom!

  • 3) Secularists are actually claiming the very mention of God in government is illegal, one only needs to read the Declaration of Independence to see the irony. As far as the identity of the God the framers were referencing, just read the mayflower compact the first written constitution, its an eye opener. Of course you can always find some framers that where not Christians but they are the exception not the rule. It is amazing how secularist try to spin and revise our true history.

  • BTW, you don't have to be Chinese to oppose the Dalai Lama. He has made big mistakes in his own Tibetan community. For example, the Shugden practitioners he is repressing and ostracizing are not Chinese but fellow Tibetans. They have nothing to do with the Chinese. And they have done nothing wrong other than continue a spiritual practice that is 400 years old (the DL just doesn't like it so he's banned it).

  • Actually, the Tibetan government in exile is a democracy. The Dalai Lama is no longer the political leader. Please get the facts straight before you start ripping at a great man.

  • The TGIE is not a democracy -- it is a theocracy and the Dalai Lama is in total control. It says it would like to become a democracy but it is still a million miles away from it. Look at the comments by the Tibetan "MP" on the Al Jazeera video, posted as a response to this video, to see for yourself.

  • It's true that the government in exile needs to step it up. But it is technically a democracy, and the Dalai Lama has stepped down.

    If it's anyone's fault that the government-in-exile's democracy is a joke, it's the people's. They'll obey every word the Dalai Lama speaks. He's protested at this himself, citing what the Buddha said: "Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense."

  • I used to believe that. However, I've seen and heard too much now to believe it any longer. He likes people to obey him. He said to monks in India protesting the ban: "There will be no change in my stand. I will never revoke the ban. You are right. It will be like the Cultural Revolution. If those who do not accept the ban do not listen to my words, the situation will grow worse for them. You sit and watch. It will grow only worse for them." He is different with Tibetans than with Westerners.

  • The Nobel Peace Prize winner and supposed champion of human rights is busy at work removing the religious rights and freedoms of one section of his own Tibetan people and persecuting all those who are trying to stand up for these rights. Sad but true. He is the theocratic ruler of Tibetans in exile and no one is allowed to oppose him on anything.

    This whole thing about restricting freedom is not entirely accurate. It's basically the equivalent of the Pope telling his followers that they should no longer pray to a certain saint because there was an error in canonization. Now of course, the ardent followers of that saint would be pretty upset. However, they are catholics and are supposed to follow orders right? Same thing here.

  • It is completely different. There is no Pope of Buddhism. The DL is not even the head of any of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, let alone of any other types of Buddhism. And also, there are millions of followers of this Buddha ("saint") and the DL has used his political power to repress the practice. Such a thing has never happened before in the history of Buddhism. The DL is certainly restricting religious freedom, no two ways about it.

  • @TheNewYorkTimesInc Actually, it quite clearly states "Tibetans(and since 1959 the Tibetan Exile community)" have had one political and religious leader. So its talking about both. Not that you really seem to understand this, as you talk about "Tibetans in China" and exiles, when Tibet is widely regarded as a seperate country, one simply controlled by China.

  • When you think about it, the Dalai Lama is the biggest obstacle to Tibetans gaining religious freedom. China cares most about politics, not religion. The Dalai Lama is the embodiment of the union of religion and politics. Because he wants to hold on to political power, the Chinese can't grant religious freedom to Tibetans without granting political power to the Dalai Lama (which they won't do). The best thing that could be done for Tibet would be for the Dalai Lama to finally step down.

  • This video has nothing to do with China as far as I can tell -- more to do with Shugden practitioners in India having no recourse as the Dalai Lama is a theocratic ruler who brooks no opposition. The Wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden website mentioned in the video explains more.

I know many people who have suffered greatly because of his policies, but everyone seems to need a 'spiritual hero of the day' and no one wants to look at the reality.   • The more ridiculous thing is that we have put laws in order to prevent a single person from becoming sole-leader of the US. 4 year terms, 2 term limit. Thus the larger number of Presidents vs. Dalai Lama. The success of the Dalai Lama has nothing to do with his ability to keep his people happy.
