Dude, it was an absurd situation. They could have died if the balloon malfunctioned further, or if they hit a tree going too fast. Laughing is a coping mechanism to define something as a non-threat (apply this to why things like sex, drugs, death, etc are so funny). Imagine you hear noises in the night, you're alone in your apartment, what the hell is going on?  A burglar? Turns out it's your brother. You laugh, he laughs. It's "funny."
