I will have to try this. Ever since I taught my dog to read, she just lays around with her TV guides and travel pamphlets. She needs to shape up or I'm going to trade her in for a ferret.
lol your not feeding a whole bowl on the treadmill. Little pieces of kibble is FINE !Its great to train your dog to be on a tread mill. shes not a "expert" she just has a great relationship with her dog. She can clearly teach her dog new things that to most dogs are frightening. She is building the dogs confidence and building a great sense of trust between her and the dog. What do you do with your dog?
great video. Good training. So many videos of dogs on treadmills are actually creating and enforcing bad behavior. My dog walks on the treadmill too.Good job!
Very nice vid. I tried to teach my dog to run on a treadmill using a similar procedure but my treadmill is very loud and my dog is a scaredy cat now she wont go near it when it's on just like the vacuum cleaner and lawn mower.
Wow! What a great video! You did a fantastic job with this. Very informative. Maggie doesn't have her treadmill anymore, but I'm tempted to get another now. Thank you for posting this!
Great video! Question - how would you motivate a dog who was not treat driven on the treadmill? Lucy was really in to the treats. I have two sighthounds who could care less about treats. Suggestions? Thanks!
Thanks for this video - I'm trying to teach my dog how to do this and right now she's practicing with me walking with her, sort of holding her, and some corn flakes for motivation. I think your method would help us out!!!
Wow, I cant believe I found this! I was just wondering how would we get Kokoh used to his. He cant run, he just needs to walk more in order to loose some weight, which will help ease the effects of his hip dysplasia. Thank you sooooo much for this video, I cant tell you how much I appreciate it.
Thank you for taking the time to make this. It will be very helpful. It might even work with getting ME on the treadmill! I'll go with chocolate treats tho. :}
Informative on teaching technique, but would have liked to see more of Lucy's body, face during the video, we saw a lot of legs, but not much else until the very end. If this was made 4 animal lovers, show us the pooch! I liked you added music to it. Good overall showing!
my dog coco is that size looks like lucy, ;0) I will try this when I get a new house this summer she is over weight for 6 months old and dr says exersize would do her good im glad i found your channel.!
Good information. I liked the safety message about not tying the dog to the running treadmill. I know some idiot would. I'll have to introduce my mom's pooch to this. Thanks for posting this.
Why did you decide on motorized insted of the dog powered ones? Maybe you use it too. I want one but they are alot of money. Im saving up and doing my homework on the best buy for my dollar. I want one that is dog powerd one they are also not cheap.
This seems like a really good solution for dog owners during inclement weather or who live in places where there aren't a lot of places for your dog to get a good amount of exercise. Would you recommend this for smaller dogs- say around 25 lbs?
Hi JellicleKitten - thanks for the comment. My trainer suggested the treadmill because Lucy (a lab mix) was overweight when I adopted her and regular walks outside aren't enough for her. She's also prone to anxiety so running on the treadmill has helped a lot with both. I suggest consulting your vet and trainer if you have questions about your specific dog. Take care!
I don't really agree with bribing it with treats :/ I know it works really well, and it would be hard to do it without it, but when it comes to taking the treats away altogether..isn't it like you're tricking your dog? It thinks its going to get a treat for the effort its putting in, and then it doesn't. Maybe it gets disappointed, I don't know o_o
good question. it works by positive association: associating the new behavior (running on the treadmill) with a positive thing (treat) until the new behavior becomes positive on its own. so, no, they don't get disappointed.
I will have to try this. Ever since I taught my dog to read, she just lays around with her TV guides and travel pamphlets. She needs to shape up or I'm going to trade her in for a ferret.

Do the research... I am not sure if feeding the dog on the treadmill is a good idea. It is just asking for a gastric torsion.

This is well done, and very helpful. We asked friends, vets, and others, and heard so many crazy things. This short video is excellent

Hi kranstar:
I think this is a great idea. Dogs seem to love these kind of things. I think it is so unfair that I never get a treat when I'm on a threadmill!
