Actually, in your description you say that the pilot tried to land after a back flip....wrong. The pilot did not realise he was too low to come out of what this particular manouvre is called a "Loop". He didn't try to land, the truth is he tried to come out of the loop but he was too low to succeed it.
@DJPaulgee1 Exactly right, sad to say. Low-altitude aerobatics are a horribly consistent source of crashes such as this one---and by no means are the pilots inexperienced. A lot of them simply haven't enough time 'on type' to gauge how much height you can gain---or lose---especially in vertical maneuvers. A tragic waste, both of lives and of rare machines.
Trust me, it pains me to even mention the word French and military together, but the idea of a "vectored thrust" (not vertical takeoff) came from Michel Wibaul. This is probably one of the most thorough on-line histories of the jet:
@OliMonster92 I have done my research and have over 1000 hours in the Harrier as well. Interestingly the Harrier was the product of a French designer. The Brits failed to provide the funding to develop the AC which later was done partially through NATO but mostly through NASA and he US. The later version, AV8B, while looking similar, was a totally redesigned airframe designed by US aerospace engineers at McDonald Douglas (now Boeing). The AC has always been jointly built by the US and GB
@squirrelhatr The Harrier was based on a Sidney Camm design of Hawker Siddley Aircraft Co.He also designed the Hurricane ,famous for it's role in shooting down the most German aircraft, during that SMALL air war we call the Battle of Britain. Also the Hunter jet which is still a stunning looking aircraft. The Harrier was nothing to do with the French. The Harrier was never a joint operation as the Hawker Company funded the prototype on it's own!!!!As it also did with the Hurricane.
The Spitfire was one of the best aircraft in the world WHEN IT FIRST FLEW IN 1936. And wait, what's that? Oh, we /do/ build aircraft these days. What about the harrier your beloved USMC bought off us because America hadn't been able to design their own usable V/STOL fihgter until 40 years later? Or how about the Jaguar? The Tornado is very, very good. What about the Typhoon? Just 4 legendary fighters we've built.
@OliMonster92 I am with you mate, but you know that the Jaguar, Tornado and Typhoon are joint ventures? So, they are not all-british designed, but of course a lot of engineering know-how comes from Britain.
I read here some silly comments by stupid people that think to be funny that way, and I think: Mothers of dumbasses are always pregnant. Thumbs up if you agree.
Just add 300 feet altitude to the aerobatics at airshows, and many accidents will merely be breath stopping moments with the pilot thinking "That was close", and the audiences not noticing any difference at all.
In your analysis of what happened you stated "try landing after done successful back flip but crash when try to landing"
What makes you possibly think he was trying to land? Did you watch the video? When the plane's underside became visible the landing gear were clearly still retracted into the wings. He was most definitely not trying to land. He was trying to complete an outside loop but lost too much altitude and didn't have enough altitude to complete the maneuver.

RIP Mr.Moore. A courageous man no doubt, using his pilot skills to display this Spitfire to enthusiasts & the general public. We all make mistakes in life. Tragic.
To the people who ask "Why did the plane explode?" Did you watch the video? He hit with the ground with over 10 g's That is 10 times the force of gravity in a split second. The plane also had a lot of aviation fuel in the wings and fuselage. Looks like too much fuel for doing a low level loop. The plane hit, broke up, fuel went flying, lots of fuel and air mixing, sparks from metal hiting asphalt or just heat from the compression. Fuel, air , heat = fire. Cavemen figured that out.
@akcastlemason All the information and knowledge you have on this is pretty impressive, but your insensitivity and lack of sympathy for the people who loved this man is absolutely disgusting.
"Wrong timing landing" You know nothing about flying. He screwed up and paid the price and we lost a pice of history. He must have inherited the money to buy the Spitfire, because he was too dumb to earn it himself. "Succesful back flip" Planes don't do back flips and the loop was not succesfull. He looped it into the ground. Who let him fly it in an airshow?
He was not trying to land, he did not do a succesfull back flip, it was not a fast loop either. He was an idiot pilot who did not check at a higher altitude how much the spitfire needed to do a loop. He pulled too hard and stalled the wings on the last half of the loop. He also hit so hard he was dead before he burned. He could have held the up line a lot longer before he pulled over the top of the loop. If he had more speed he could have just leveled out inverted and then rolled upright.
You don't sound like you've ever flown before, let alone aerobatics. Accidents happen all the time and flying is a very demanding business. Things can go wrong very quickly anytime at low level and particularly during these high intensity events. I suggest, until you get a significant amount of hours (if any at all as you sound like a potential 'groundy'), you shut up and stop giving us your opinion on things you know very little amount about.
What a tragedy, losing a pilot as well as a piece of history. My condolences to the family. Makes me heart sick every time I see an accident of this magnitude.
My deepest respect for the deceased pilot. I am sure that he , wherever he might be, if he could chose, he would give his life - not fairly enough with his family and friends - if he could avoid destruction of the SPITFIRE. I am not being cold, please do not misunderstand my sentiments. All I know is that HE, if he loved the plane - could eventually be very upset for having destroyed both, his life and the old hero. England owes a lot to these little machines and their young crazy pilots.

@roverman540 im no expert at planes but it was probably the fuel tank hitting something or a spark shooting up hitting the fuel tank and exploding or something like that?
the plane even a jet fighter will always shift a little downward right after a angle recovery, but a pilot might not expect that and bam there he goes.
some of these comments are dissgrace-full, this pilot gave his life for the love of the spit and to let us enjoy seeing this remarkable aeroplane...NO historic warbird pilot goes out with the intention ov either damaging a bird or indeed loosing his/her life. my heart felt apoligies go out to the family and loved ones who have to read these coments !...RIP David More
vishion i know what you mean and this idiot dosent even know what the correct name of the plane is the plane is called the spitfire do some research he wasnt landing he didnt have enough altitude to do that if you pay attention you will see the plane drift when it get to close and the least you could do is show some respect the guys put they er life on the line for theirs and our entertainnent the least you could do is get your info and facts right
@condo559 And from spelling mistakes you moved onto grammar mistakes. You're too fucking stupid to talk in public. You should be seen and not heard dumbass. The 'seen' part is debatable..
@condo559 Sorry.... can't..... It's my sworn duty to seek out and exploit half-wits like you... There are rocks that would be ashamed to be found in your head... LOL
This video has brought back too many painful memories. I was at this airshow at Woodford, Stockport when this happened in 1992.
The idiots on here that *THINK* they are being funny by some of their inane comments should keep their thoughts to themselves and show respect to David, his family and friends
The airshow commentator was a close friend of Davids and clearly upset.
@visionstyle1 Thanks for your great words. I think the same. I am a pilot and an ATC, but these bad comments are related to bad thoughts and small poor minds. Small souls like to judge without think. Forgive and forget about them.
@visionstyle1 Vintage aircraft like the Spitfire should not be demonstrated in this way where something can go wrong and both aircraft and pilot are gone forever.
@warhawk40 This was poor judgement on the pilots behalf, he was far too low to consider a loop. So long as minimum altitudes are observed, no harm will occur. You cannot possiblystop these from doing this, this is what they were designed for, manouvering. There's only a limited number of airframe hours on these things anyway, why not use those hours to the full? I fly occasionally, it's my choice, I know I could die, but I do it anyway because, if I didn't, I'd never do anything.
You sick puppies! Showing this is akin to enjoying a snuff video - show some respect - and the only good way to die in a Spitfire was in defending Britain from the Nazis.
unfortunately, the pilot was the only one to blame in this crash....He made a fatal error and proceeded to carry out the maneuver at a too low altitude....such a terrible waste of life and machine. Sometimes when at airshows, you realise how complacent pilots and operators become with aeroplanes especially historic ones, when they carry out maneuvers as if they were brand new and as powerful as a modern jet.
i know that this might not sound all too pleasant but i hope that guy got knocked out from the impact because if not... that means he died from being burned alive while conscious. I feel sorry for him but not in a bad way. r.i.p. to that guy.
@mveyt0808. Prove it then. Also the pilot isn't dumb. It takes alot of quick wits, and being smart to be a pilot. He just miscalculated the flip and the altitude.
It wasnt landing, it was finishing a loop and was too close to the ground , pilot pulled the stick back but lost lift so the Spit "pancaked" with tragic results
@draigbach1 TY TY for being the only other person ive seen on these plane crash sites that will agree....alot of these crashes these guys are just pancaking there planes out. It just happens. The planes not flying at that point. Its attitude is horizontal and level but movement is vertical. Need more room to get the forward airspeed picked up. Yes the plane is level....But do you know how high that a of a is right then??? jeez.
Maybe he lost full power in the climb so never got enough height for a full loop. Either way a he didn't have enough height for a safety margin.

@akcastlemason I have to agree - totally.
though possibly the disintergrating engine block/hot oil etc was the primary source of ignition.
There are old pilots.
There are bold pilots.
There are no old bold pilots.

@akcastlemason All the information and knowledge you have on this is pretty impressive, but your insensitivity and lack of sympathy for the people who loved this man is absolutely disgusting.

@akcastlemason He would have hit the ground at well over 100-200G's actually
soupondaroof1 8 months ago
"Wrong timing landing" You know nothing about flying. He screwed up and paid the price and we lost a pice of history. He must have inherited the money to buy the Spitfire, because he was too dumb to earn it himself. "Succesful back flip" Planes don't do back flips and the loop was not succesfull. He looped it into the ground. Who let him fly it in an airshow?
akcastlemason 1 year ago

England owes a lot to these little machines and their young crazy pilots.

now why did the plane explode?
roverman540 1 year ago
@roverman540 im no expert at planes but it was probably the fuel tank hitting something or a spark shooting up hitting the fuel tank and exploding or something like that?

@Vforceboy Maybe...

the plane even a jet fighter will always shift a little downward right after a angle recovery, but a pilot might not expect that and bam there he goes.

some of these comments are dissgrace-full, this pilot gave his life for the love of the spit and to let us enjoy seeing this remarkable aeroplane...NO historic warbird pilot goes out with the intention ov either damaging a bird or indeed loosing his/her life. my heart felt apoligies go out to the family and loved ones who have to read these coments !...RIP David More

RIP David Moore

TheWierdFish 2 weeks ago
You sick puppies! Showing this is akin to enjoying a snuff video - show some respect - and the only good way to die in a Spitfire was in defending Britain from the Nazis.

Hrm.... in my professional opinion, i think that during the landing of the plane, the belly hit a little bit too hard on the runway....
unclepoepoe 2 years ago
That's going to leave a mark.
ArizonaDelRio 2 years ago
unfortunately, the pilot was the only one to blame in this crash....He made a fatal error and proceeded to carry out the maneuver at a too low altitude....such a terrible waste of life and machine. Sometimes when at airshows, you realise how complacent pilots and operators become with aeroplanes especially historic ones, when they carry out maneuvers as if they were brand new and as powerful as a modern jet.

@mveyt0808. Prove it then. Also the pilot isn't dumb. It takes alot of quick wits, and being smart to be a pilot. He just miscalculated the flip and the altitude.

It wasnt landing, it was finishing a loop and was too close to the ground , pilot pulled the stick back but lost lift so the Spit "pancaked" with tragic results
draigbach1 2 years ago 3
@draigbach1 TY TY for being the only other person ive seen on these plane crash sites that will agree....alot of these crashes these guys are just pancaking there planes out. It just happens. The planes not flying at that point. Its attitude is horizontal and level but movement is vertical. Need more room to get the forward airspeed picked up. Yes the plane is level....But do you know how high that a of a is right then??? jeez.
