I was in Venice, Italy the other day. During the later evening hours while down in the lobby, I overheard the gentlemen working there talking about a song they just downloaded. So then the guy starts to play this song by Yes. Even though he couldn't speak English very well, they both could sing the words to Roundabout quite well!
I have one little "point of contention" comment about this posting: I saw Yes in concert twice, on their tours of the U.S. during 1976 and `77. I was always an "up-front fanatic" and carefully watched Chris Squire during this song. That little "high-register run" during the opening full-band intro part that you played on guitar only; I clearly remember that Chris CERTAINLY DID play that on his bass guitar. I can`t be sure what they did on the studio recording, but I know what he did "live".
@charliebe28 You're correct, even today he still does play that part live (on the bass) but not on the studio version that I covered. I guess there is no disagreement :) Thanks!
Hello Miguel: Thanks for the reply comment concerning my earlier comment. Since I kind-of concentrated on one very small part of your performance/video posting that I had an "accuracy issue" about, let me ALSO say that I thought VERY WELL of your performance/video, generally. I know first-hand that merely being able to play the "Roundabout" bass guitar part is an "advanced level" accomplishment; and I thought that the video was a nicely "professional quality" project.
I know lots will hate me, but honestly, I can't stand rickenbackers. I have a 51 p bass reissue, with a slab body and single coil pickup. It is amazingly versatile, has a bolt on neck, and only has two controls. I love my p bass, and when I played a rickenbacker, I hated it. I learned that geddy stopped using his because you could get that sound in the studio if you wanted to. I also learned that mccartney was given his.I would play geddy's (with badass bridge) and Cliff's. thats it.
@bassharmonica1 i can respect that opinion the p bass has one of the best low ends of all the basses ive played but theres something about the rickenbackers that i love (not to mention that they look bad ass)
@bassharmonica1 Rickys are quite niche, really. Lovely if that's the sound you want. Bad ass makes a big difference (my 4001's always had one). I reckon the best is to have lots of different makes and models and you can cover the full range. I've got a 4001, a Jazz, and a Precision copy (can't afford the real thing yet) but you can never have enough, no matter what the missus says!
You`re right; we hate you. Just kidding. However -, if a person wants that Prog-Rock bass-GUITAR growl, then you can`t get better than a Ric (with Rotosound strings). I`m a guitar player; and actually like short-scale basses; but if I ever bought a long-scale, it would have to be a Ric.
@bassharmonica1 Many people don't like Rickenbacker's sound too much or prefer other basses better. However Chris Squire's tone is, to me, more than just "Rickenbacker tone". Chris' tone is still there when he plays a Tobias or even a Fender bass.
Brilliant!!! My favorite bass line(s) of all time. Back then I wanted a Ric so bad but due to parental control and input from a friend of my Dad's, I ended up with a P-Bass.
this is brilliant Miguel! a new bass player in fact becoming more obsessed with it daily! i came across this today and loved how you broke down this amazing Yes tune i grew up with! i've always loved chris squire as well! thanks for the inspiration!! ;)
Another outstanding video. Excellent ! Man, I would love to have you in my band ! I think this song is one of my favorites, that bass is just so much fun to listen to and watching you play it makes it even better. Well done !!!
Thank you so much! This is my favorite Yes song, and I'm a big Yes fan, btw when you play the electric guitar, what setting do you have the gain, bass, middle, treble, etc. for your amp?
Question: Are the electronics in the Chris Squire Rick different from the stock setup in the 4003 and/or the 4001 v63? I had both and was never quite able to duplicate your (Chris Squire's) sound. I had a hartke 7000 head with a Hartke XL215 and a Hartke 4x10 top cab and it sounded good but never really got close to this sound. It sounds pretty compressed and maybe that is the secret?
Thanks for posting. The end of the vid reminds me of a Steve Howe vid I saw. Excellent!!

Holy shit! Excellent bass playing! I have to say that this is the best bass cover I have seen in years...honestly. Your attack on the bass is 100% dead on! Simply awesome!!!!!
@miguelbass I'm watching this and seeing you getting so into this song....i'm jamming along on my bass best i can. and it's LOL compared to you. But this has to be top 5 is not greatest bass songs ever! you cant sit there and not tap your feet or nod your head. Well played my man...well played! also I hate you cause you own a Rickenbacker! My life was also changed by Mr. Squire. My first Ric was a 4001 bought in '74. (year I graduated HS) You playing is dead on and thanks for the additional bass lines. @jammie4u Yes, I appreciate Gary's playing. I know some of Starcastle's song, although haven't tried to play them in this way. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.
@miguelbass Definitely so, Thanks for posting! It was a excellent cover, with lots of spirit. Very creative with the ending, Do you do most songs by ear? I'm a guitarist and Yes riffs, especially Chris Squires riffs have moved me. I love picking apart Yes songs by ear, especially from Fragile or the Yes Album.
@shortmansrq All by ear. It's maybe impossible to notate the playing style. Just the notes... I think by repeated listening one can get closer to the original rather than having a "silent map". Of course you can combine both if it helps but always trust your ears in for the final "judgement". Some tabs or scores I have seen are far from accurate.
if you were left handed and your hair was in a bowl cut, i might mistake you for a young paul mccartney. what a coincidence, your both amazing bassists!
Man I love sound of Rickenbacker guitars and basses! I especially love your cover. It sounds exactly like the instruments being played in the song! Right on! Btw, Great cover! :)
Now all-but taken for granted these many years later, Roundabout still suffices as their defining song, the heart of all YES music. If I had to pick just one. . . this would still be my favorite. Again, very nicely done, Miguel.
@TheColininla It would be very hard to say now "my favourite" (too many) but definitely for me there is an "bc" and "ac" with Fragile, and in particular with Roundabout. Thank you very much.
I´ll never get tired of watching your video. I remember myself trying to play this work of art many years ago. Really, Yes changed my life too. Thanks for posting.
@miguelbass I don´t miss nothing in this piece of art. Roundabout has everything a song should have. Harmonies, rythm, great performance, great vocals, great instrument solos. Fragile is a great rock album, from the individual solos(principally Mood for a day and The fish) to the great epics (South side, long distance, and Heart of the sunrise). For me is with Close to the edge, the pinnacle in Yes career and one of the most talented lineups in rock history.
It's changed many people their lives. It changed mine and i guess a lot of people their lives to. Realy great cover my compliments. I've tried it to but it's just a little bit to fast. Again my compliments.
I love the bass, was it Paul Maccartney that said,The bass player shouldn't be just the fatboy in the back?So here I am on Youtube looking up bass riffs and covers.A question Mr.Wiguelbass,do you ever goof off and would consider busting out the bass riff from the Stroker and Hoop intro rofl.I know it's beneath you.But I think it's played with the pick and you might be the only one that could do it some justice. You play as good as Mr.Squire and Mr.Lee peace bro!
@jetsrush01 I have some tips written on the faq of my site but I promise to do a clip soon with that info! meanwhile check what I have writtent on miguelbass..com ok? :) Thanks!
Great playing! you really nailed Chris' tone here. I've never been a big fan of Ricks or plectrum players but Chris Squire is one of my favourites. Great player and great sound and you've done a really good job here!
@overture13 I understand what you mean - I also enjoy the playing of some bassists, even if I am not exactly into the general style they play - I guess it's a sign that they are simply beyond that...!
@miguelbass Agreed, it's very much a testament to Chris' skill that he can play a bass I don't like in a style I don't like and still write some of my favourite bass lines. He really is simply “beyond that” as you put it! I really loved your playing here, you really nailed the feel of the song as well as Chris' tone here.
Rockin'! Cute ending. ...."that's the way they became the bassist bunch" (which is a pretty smoking bassline by Carol Kaye, now that I think about it)....
@miguelbass there's a really great bass player on here who nails it. His YT name is JC10255. Just type "Brady Bunch Carol Kaye" into the YT search and it'll be the first vid on the list.
This song and this whole FRAGILE album has lost none of its power and appeal in 39 years! So glad I was born in 1961 and I play lead guitar and bass, and I have a 4001 and 4003 Rickenbacker electric basses!
@miguelbass Yes I do! I am on Youtube for last couple of years with PHILLY ROCK, and more recently wih Crooked Rose Band! Crooked Rose band is headlining at the Nail in Ardmore PA on January 8th, 2011, see you there! We are going to be playing Roundabout (which I have been playing on Bass since 1977) in upcoming shows!

@timmy591 Again thanks, timmy. I'm getting slow on replying. Slow it down as much as you need to begin with.

@miguelbass I've had a 4001 Rickenbacher bass guitar since 1988, and a red fireglo 4003 dual output 4003 Rick Bass since 1996.

Great playing! you really nailed Chris' tone here. I've never been a big fan of Ricks or plectrum players but Chris Squire is one of my favourites. Great player and great sound and you've done a really good job here!
overture13 1 year ago
@overture13 I understand what you mean - I also enjoy the playing of some bassists, even if I am not exactly into the general style they play - I guess it's a sign that they are simply beyond that...!
miguelbass 1 year ago
@miguelbass Agreed, it's very much a testament to Chris' skill that he can play a bass I don't like in a style I don't like and still write some of my favourite bass lines. He really is simply “beyond that” as you put it! I really loved your playing here, you really nailed the feel of the song as well as Chris' tone here.

Rockin'! Cute ending. ...."that's the way they became the bassist bunch" (which is a pretty smoking bassline by Carol Kaye, now that I think about it)....
olflatop 1 year ago
@olflatop Thanks :) If that song is somewhere on YT pls let me know! Merry Xmas
miguelbass 1 year ago
@miguelbass there's a really great bass player on here who nails it. His YT name is JC10255. Just type "Brady Bunch Carol Kaye" into the YT search and it'll be the first vid on the list.

This song and this whole FRAGILE album has lost none of its power and appeal in 39 years! So glad I was born in 1961 and I play lead guitar and bass, and I have a 4001 and 4003 Rickenbacker electric basses!
Beamshipcaptain 1 year ago
@Beamshipcaptain Hey! Thanks again... do you have clips with your Ricks? That'd be nice to see!
