it's a mandocello, handmade by a retired BT engineer called David Oddy. It's tuned the same as a cello, hence the name, and has 4 pairs of strings.

Almost...the cello-mandolin (as SK refers to it) is tuned GDAD - a cello is tuned CGDA. These aren't really mandocellos although Davids does refer to them as such.
