  • Gustav Holst @ 1:42 ( Mars:Bringer of War )

  • SX >>>> DT... i mean seriously... dream theater are boring and mediocre nowadays. their last good album was Metropolis, pt. 2

  • I like Symphony X more than Dream Theater.

  • This song indeed produces such intensity that only few could perceive. Wow.

  • Genial

  • This is my favorite song of all time, and of rmany reasons. The intro is just jaw-dropping amazing, then follow it with that awesome unexpected riff and that millitary sound. And don't get me started on the beautiful Piano/Huitar duet on the main theme, that's just half of the song. Truly a work of art.

  • currently typin up an essay to this song.... Everything becomes that bit more epic.

  • Gotta love the quartet at the beginning.

  • This is Symphony X´s label baby , their trade-mark, gees.. This song right here got me into it.. Back in 97! Man, this album hasn´t yet being beated! Why? Here´s the fact; once fomer bass player Miller left the band, symphony X was never the same though, I don´t want to take Leponds credit and contribution to band he´still freaken amazing, too.

  • This song IS THE essential prog metal song.

  • Sounds a lot like the Super Mario level with the flying fortress.

  • IM GOING TO SEE THEM LIVE IN HOLLAND !!!

  • 3:42 keyboard melter!

  • one of the best metal albums of 90s

  • you know a song is badass when it has to be divided into 3 parts to be put on youtube

  • muy bueno,,en verda,,viva la musica

  • i think this song need a video clip :P

  • I don't like tragedy

  • which one of them composes the songs??? Does anyone know?

  • @blast3000

    Michael Romeo, the guitarist.

  • i listen to the whole thing almost everyday.

  • The only thing I don't like about Symphony X is the lyrics but everything else is literally perfect.

  • DT & SX basically do everything I love about music. Great technical abilities, and their music is complex, epic and catchy, which are the differences between good music and bad.

  • I can't find the piece of Mars, The Bringer Of War on this song. Where are the similarities? Help me, please.

    Great song, Chuck Norris approves.

  • @dreecas The part that starts at 1:42 is simmilar to the main the theme from Mars.

  • Comment removed

  • @iknowDavenMC the part at 1:42 also sounds like the Dark World Mountain/Forest theme from a Link to the Past. It would be pretty awesome if Symphony X covered that song.

  • @iknowDavenMC this is the song that reminds me of when i 1st heard it: Holst's "mars" from "the planets"

  • @iknowDavenMC I can't believe I'm saying this but for some reason I think of Space Mutiny when I hear it. No disrespect to the band.

  • 1:42 wtf Mars quotation. lol

  • @Solar2 i thought i was the only one that noticed that, my schools concert band played mars and i was like THIS SOUNDS LIKE SYMPHONY X, noone knew what i was talking about though haha

  • Un viajesote musical muy bueno

  • I wish they would have done more songs like this! Really a symphonic metal. :-)

  • A masterpiece idd!

The same as Milton's "Paradise Lost" and "Paradise regained" and Dante's "Inferno", where they got the inspiration for the lyrics. The combination of Symphony X and John Milton / Dante just has to be a masterpiece <3

  • Hands down the best Symphony X song! The intricate solo and riff playing mixed in with Russell Allens beautiful voice makes this one of the only 20 minutes songs that is a joy to listen to all the way through. A freaking masterpiece!

  • @Alazerith definitely one of the best - but the random soloing (DT style) kills it for me - The Odyssey is imo a better "epic"

  • Ei, look my playlists

  • Holy sh*t...I'm a HUGE DT fan, and sooner or later (judging by the millions of other DT fan comments), I had to of discovered Symphony X. I fell in love with these guys immediately. But when I found out they were from Middletown, I went insane! I live RIGHT next to Middletown! I always thought NJ was just a useless pile of sh*t, inhabited by oomp-loompas! It even got worse when Jersey Shore came along! But now I know that NJ might be worth something after all!

    Prog Metal for life! \m/

  • Mars!

  • hey, does anybody here know the opening chorus is taken from J. S. Bach's mass in Bflat minor... in the moment i found this out i started to dislike Symph. x :-/ however, i agree they are perfect musicians...

  • @EmperorMato B minor of course :-o

  • @EmperorMato Many people (even successful classical and contemporary musicians) use Bach's chorales as melodies. (david maslanka/del borgo ect.) They were church hyms. I wouldn't be so quick to bash a band for using really old genius to create something new.

  • @musicxpwnsxlife ok, you're right. what i dont like is they never say they use it from Bach, you know. their succes comes from something which is not theirs.. that's my problem :) but as i said, they are imo very good musicians

  • @EmperorMato The sentence "They use it from Bach" doesn't sound right to me. You can say this when something is "Copy-Paste". Do you actually believe that this is "Copy-Paste" ? Or even do you actually believe that their success as a band is because of their first 100 minutes of this song? Are you serious dude?

  • anybody know if they actually wrote the intro? that is some incredible 4 part writing and it takes a huge amount of training to be able to do.

anyway...fucking incredible piece. this is their echos lol

  • 8:30 _ 9:00 Ladies and Gentleman, Mr Michael Anthony LePond III

  • @LuxAnna79 Hello. Thomas Miller was the bassist in this album.

  • You have to be a monster without soul to dislike this

  • @Shady32 or a troll.

  • this is incredible..

  • I couldn't stand Symphony X. Then I found this. My life is changed.

  • Such a great Neo-Classical piece.

  • this and the Odyssey are the answers to life

  • in the odyssey they use one of the same progressions in this song. its just a different time signature

  • @panteraRox22 at about 4:30, that progression they use that at the end of Revelation (Paradise Lost album) as well.

  • intro sounds exactly like am i evil by diamond head

  • @FenderUsa Both are based on Mars, The Bringer of War by Gustav Holst.

  • Now tell me, how can someone dislike this?? It really makes me sad.

  • Who is singing that Intro?!??!

  • @edmega332 I'm pretty sure it's Russell Allen.

  • @edmega332 probably their singer. layered and layered and layered. maybe a couple of the other guys in the band chipped in too.

  • @eclipseml I believe Michael Romeo and Pinnella laid down some tracks too

  • still my favorite album of Symphony x

  • power rising

  • Goooddddddddddddddddd goooooooooooodddddddddddd exelenttttttttttttttttttttttttt amazinggggggggggggggggggggggg first time im in loveeeeeeeeeeee goood bandddddddddddddd

  • i had an orgasm of 20 minutes with this song

  • Symphony X is one of the best bands ever.

  • @jsem94 One of? Those are two words that can be removed from your comment.

  • Why can't I vote and vote and vote and vote... There are no words to describe what this does to me and how do i feel when I listen to it.. Pure power and intensity of feeling..

  • There are no words to explain the power and intensity that this song produces. Its simply Amazing. Also when the instruments start playing it sounds like the lvl in mario 3 where youre on the boat or the giant tank and your'e jumping over all the cannon balls LOL

  • @joe2131 i thought that same thing when i heard the instruments come in, always reminds me of that level

  • @chriscoooley Great minds think alike ;)

  • @joe2131 ...Best comment ever.

  • @joe2131 Actually that part is based off of Mars, The Bringer of War from Holst's The Planets. That compostion went on to inspire other bands that used it in their songs. Even my band did an improvisation of it live.

  • There are no words to explain the power and intensity that this song produces. Its simply Amazing

  • i love this song! totally an epic creation for music!!1!

  • simplemente ,una obra maestra ...

  • Can't vote this song high enough - it is way way way way beyond a metal masterpiece, better that an ear orgasm, it is more that divine, more that friggen brilliant, more than better than anything else, better than EPIC !!!!

  • heavy metal at its finest

  • unbelievably godly, but cant expect less from these talented bitches lol Symphony X forevah

  • anyone know what part of the mass this comes from?

  • @XavierSky the extract comes from BWV 232 symbolum nicenum: confiteor, Mass in B minor by J.S. Bach

  • EPIC!!!!!!

Along with Mozarts requiem and Chopins nocturnes this is one of my all time favorite musical pieces. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

  • This song should be at the end of the CD. Nothing can succeed to this masterpiece...

  • Michael Pinnella have Parkinson's disease on fingers

  • Clearly based on Gustav Holst's "Mars the bringer of war" from his suite the Planets.

Anyway here know more modern composers than Bach!?

  • @PennyDreadful1: I was just thinking the same thing haha

  • This song is just Perfect!!!It couldn't be better!!!!!

  • does the intro remind anyone else of ave verum corpus by mozart?

  • @StringzOfFury there are few people who actually know the mozart and bach vocal chorals to actually recognize them like you have. good job, yes it does remind of that choral.

  • anyone has the score for this piece? or MIDI? im especially interested in the choir part at the beginning

  • @killerbunny123123 the choir part is J.S bach B minor mass

  • @suffiice can u send me the link, i want to hear it

  • my friends and I have learnt to sing the opening verse in four part harmony up until "Eternal is my pain" Its taken weeks to learn haha so difficult to sing

  • @NiobiumDrummer My friend and I do that too!

  • @NiobiumDrummer cool :D how? do u have the MIDI or the scores or smthin or just listening to it and trying to find out?

  • @killerbunny123123 haha wow this is a year late reply, but what we did was my friends who know more music theory than i do, actually tabbed it out in like guitarpro or something. took us a full year to get it 100% right.

  • @ SirJamestheIII Theres no right or wrong way to use time signatures.

  • I started dissecting some of Symphony X's music and when you actually break it down the theory Michael Romeo is a freaking genius. Some things I don't even understand how the thought of them. Also, with the time signature thing. I found it best and really interesting to use them at the last bar of phrases because if you just have that extra eighth note in there or take one away it makes it very interesting to listen to and cool.

  • @candlewick163 well hes basically a classical composer

  • There is nothing better than a really cool choir sound. Epic is the only word for this song :)

  • i'm a great fan of DT, but, no doubt, SX is mind blowing too.. we are hearing prog. rock.. so no need of justifying them..\m/

  • I like DT but Symphony X uses odd time signatures a little more tastefully. DT uses odd time signatures for the sake of being technical while SX uses them a little more musically. You almost don't even know that SX uses them at times.

  • If u listen to a DT song like the Dance of Eternity, which is riddled with odd time signitures, although it may not sound rite to alot of people used to 4/4, the riffs are actually cleverly devised and sound good, but there usage of them is in a particular way that just makes them sound like Dream Theater and no one else. Best band in the world second only to Iron Maiden.

  • i agree with you that iron maiden is the greatest band ever. I have a Dave Murray strat

  • Too many bands use virtuoism at the expense of it sounding good, stuff doesnt have to be hard, and fuck you, if they sucked they wouldnt have played gigs infront of hundreds of thousands of people, and there songs are harder to play than queen songs you twat. Listen to the real stuff, not Run to the Hills.

  • Hey, chill man! although I love this song much more than "Run to the hills"... it was an 80's hit!!! You better give some respect to maiden... they gave real inspiration to hard rock!!!

  • you're just a hater=)

I read your commet on dream Theater too-.-

  • you would be wrong my friend, there is always a reason for odd time signatures, it'll com to you one day

  • @danthebackerman1 i never said i didn't like odd time signatures. Sometimes they are used and they have no musicality to them other than being technical or complex too woo the listener. Pretty much every prog band has made that mistake.

  • @sirjamestheIII: No, that just means that you don't have the musical ability to comprehend such time signatures. So, like he said, it will come to you one day. maybe you should'nt listen to prog metal yet.

  • @7metal4life7 It takes more musical ability to use odd time signatures without making them painfully obvious to the listener. I enjoy songs with crazy (sometimes unnecessary) time signatures. I go to DT concerts. Meshuggah is one of my favorite bands. But sneaking odd time signatures into songs to make the everyday person enjoy it is quite difficult and I admire bands who can do that. Like Rush or Iron maiden. what do you mean by comprehend? i comprehend everything but i don't always enjoy it

  • @SirJamestheIII

"Musicality," is such a vague term and more of an opinion than anything else. It's like the term "beauty," which is strictly in the eyes of the beholder. But I do like Symphony X a little bit more than Dream Theater as well, though they have an equal amount of ability.

  • @CapnKeys I would define musicality as the ability to capture emotion and thought in music.

  • i herd a coment about a 8 fingererrr being the king crimson bassist.. that german dude.. but i looked up the two bassists on wikapedia and there was no mention of either of them being in kc.. was that kid just an idiot or ...

  • neww favorite

  • best song.....symphony is the best..

     xd

  • This band reminds me of a metal version of Queen. I don't mean that in a bad way, and I don't mean that they are trying to sound like Queen.. that is just what comes off. I love this band.

  • @FirstBlood1337 multi harmonies + lots of reverb = Queen sound,

just joking but it seems that way sometimes

  • @GIGeorge23 absolutely you are right!! freddie mercury was somewhere here...

  • Ah nice extract from Holst's Mars

  • Well I really think that the best progressive metal bands nowadays are Dream Theater, Symphony X, Circus Maximus, Dreamscape and Vanden Plas, Although the most similar to DT is Dreamscape but even so they are very different.. Circus Maximus are awesome also...I highly recommend you to check this bands they are very very good indeed. Cheers - *DT and SX keep rockin'!! * =)

  • Symphony X, Ayreon, Pain of Salvation, Opeth. Missed some there pal.

  • jibber102

    Respectfully replying

    check out DT's albums

    Train of Thought

    Octavarium

    Systematic Chaos

    for examples of Petrucci

    playing heavier parts.

  • @rgwhittaker

Their latest album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings is also considerably heavier imo.

  • dream theater pwns :)

  • @rgwhittaker I know they have some heavier songs, and I still love DT all the same. However, DT and Symphony X have completely different sounds. While they may still be a similar genre of music, their tones and atmospheres are not even close.

  • How in the heck does everybody compare Symphony X to Dream Theater? Soooo different. Symphony has freaking awesome orchestra parts with super fast and heavy riffs. DT is all technical prog and whatnot...when is the last time they had crazy crushing guitars (I know Petrucci is awesome but he doesn't play extremely heavy) and orchestras? Uh...

  • @jibber102 --> Octavarium, the orchestra they use in that song is asewome :)

And in their last album 'Black clouds and silver linings' they play some pretty heavy parts.

But I definetely agree with you that both bands are very different, that's why I like listening to both of them so much :D

  • Lets not forget Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance now. Either way I love both DT and SX, so to me it doesn't matter how different or similar they are.

  • Idd,DT is prog to the max, merges with jazz..too not metal imo :P

  • ever track on train of thought is shit heavy bar one, (vacant), Petrucci uses seven strings and barotone guitars, its kind of hard not to get a heavy sound using those, A nightmare to remember is crushingly heavy, as is the Dark Eternal Night and the Glass Prison and many others i cant be asked to name.

  • @jibber102 One word...Octavarium

  • Love 8:00

  • However, these two are enough to please

  • Check out Seventh Wonder. They're an amazing progressive metal band.

  • jason rullo is soooo underrated.... love this band so much, best musicians.

  • yeah Rullos foot work is supurb

  • the beginning is...amazing.

  • The bass solo at 8:30 is the greatest bass solo I ever heard. It's a pity that Thomas Miller left. :(

  • I LOVE YOU MICHAEL ROMEO!

  • A metal masterpiece!

  • It is virtually impossible to get bored of this master piece of progressive metal. I've listened to this song atleast 50 times. Other amazing song by Symphony x is The Odyssey which I highly recommend

  • what a great choice of reverb, just tops the whole experience off - spine tinglingly amazing

  • c'mon, fuck that commercial shit, this is really awesome ;)

  • It's called "FFAC - For the Reunion" and it's sounds a bit like the 4:54 of this song..

  • thats not their piece originally, its a neoclassical piece

  • this song is crazy awesome i love it and its three parts

  • The part at 4:54 is similar to Final Fantasy Advent Children at exactly 18:16....

  • kadaj's music? or black water

  • "Sign"?

  • Epic

  • so beautiful. i love dt, but this is my favorite between both of them. the last 3 minutes brought tears to my eyes. and that never happens.

  • me gusta la intro

  • Wow .... So beautiful ...

  • having had front row live experiences with both dream theatre and symphony x, i can say i prefered symphony x live by quite a margin, album wise it is much closer.

  • Man these guys and Dream Theater (only Metroplis pt. 2 scenes from a memory) are the best.......but i dont want to compare symph x and dream theater because neither one is better......i think they are much too different to compare.

  • they changed to ostinato from mars but it still kicks ass

  • I love the signer of SX

    Labrie sucks big time (live)

but I don't like the "power" songs of SX, instead I love songs like this one or The Odyssey..

  • Labrie sucks live now, but listen to anything live before his accident and he was good. (else he wouldn't have been chosen as their singer.

  • labrie is sometimes good, sometimes bad live. he got food poisining and ruptured his vocal chords while throwing up and it fucked his singing up for a few years
