Allied high command did it on purpose; to show the Russians (who were advancing on Dresden from the east) exactly what allied bombers were capable of. The western Allies were afraid of Russia going on beyond Berlin, so they wanted Stalin to see/realise how devastating Allied air power was. Dresden was just another tragedy in a terrible war, &was commited purely as a message to a 'potential' future opponent (i.e. the Russians).

The thing is, razing Dresden was merely propoganda. Allied high command did it on purpose; to show the Russians (who were advancing on Dresden from the east) exactly what allied bombers were capable of. The western Allies were afraid of Russia going on beyond Berlin, so they wanted Stalin to see/realise how devastating Allied air power was. Dresden was just another tragedy in a terrible war, &was commited purely as a message to a 'potential' future opponent (i.e. the Russians).

It is very easy to understand. Read Churchill's "Dresden Memo". Churchill the Politician saw the Dresden scandal as a threat to his career. But Britain stood up for its allies in Poland, & Churchill knew that Hitler &his Nazi war machine was no way a peaceful entity in Europe. Hitler declared war on Russia, June 1941, & proceeded to personally make military mistakes that ultimately lost the war for Germany. Had Adolf listened to his Generals, Germany would have won WW2 in Europe by the start of 1944. Fact.

The Pacific theater was another thing, but Britain had its share there too. Britain humiliated Japan by abandoning the alliance with it and Japan started to expand in order to gain sources of raw material.

Indeed the key is a close proximity (& having influence) to oil resources. Arguably Russia is independent, it has its own oil & gas. But China, USA & India do not have their own (not enough anyway).
