Indeed, it is. In 2005 I was staying in Vedado, close to the University of Havana, and felt very comfortable. It's also a very scenic area, lots of interesting old mansions. And it's easy to get downtown, actually I used to walk downtown most of the time rather than taking the bus.
I wish I could visit again . In that trip I stayed A casa particular in Habana Vieja .. a nice case casa actually .. but regret not staying in Vedado . I'm planning a trip to Cuba soon .. and from now I'm planning to stay in Vedado .. I really love it atmosphere also .. so vibrant at night near the Habana libre hotel .. cinema theatres that makes u feel being in the fifties !
Vedado is a lovely area .. great place to stay at with close distance to almost everywhere in Havana ..

I was there in February 2008 for two weeks ..
