I happend to find an LP of "Close To You" -- and may not have given it a serious listen right away, except for Chrissie having made Karen Carpenter seem more "relevant" to my musical tastes. Chrissie is my favorite contemporary female vocalist, but Karen on vinyl was startling. Truly a masterful vocalist. On this LP Karen covers two Beatles songs, "Help," and "Baby It's You," creative and original versions of these songs. Chrissie has covered numerous Beatles hits, too, and all top-notch

Chrissie is a great, distinctive singer, and has produced a lot of extremely memorable music - out of her depth here, though, like the rest of the cast. This programme was horrible. Ronan Keating presenting a show on the Carpenters is akin to Jimmy Tarbuck presenting a show on Led Zeppelin. Totally inappropriate.
When was this video, "Remembering the Carpenters," released? There was a PBS special called, "Close To You, Remembering the Carpenters," released back in '98 . . . but James Walbourne was not with Chrissie Hynde back then, so I'm confused.
@977Radio Thank You! Great to have the information. I added an entry in Wikipedia on the history of the song, tagging this performance video you posted here, and will update it for the sake of clarity and completion.
@GIOFRITO The drummer hal blaine turned down the carpenters he could have managed them but he didnt think singing girl drummers would happen he was kicking himself in the ass later here you hear chrissie singing in one of her 9 differant voices
What's wrong wth her mke? Terrible sound engineering. Hope it was better live. A wonderful tribute, one I would like hear produced to Chrssie's usual standard.
Karen Carpenter had an amazing voice!

I love Karen's rendition, and Chrissie's nuance lets me hear more of that longing in "long" ago. Nice!
