Looks like Drew was wrong... this technology does NOT make it funnier. But, I admit it was interesting to see them try it. The technology is pretty cool.
What hurt most of all, though, may just have been the fact that this bit was just not funny. It had maybe 2 laughs in it.
Please everyone subscribe to Drew Carey's Improv a Ganza!!! It's coming April 11 to GSN. They post promos that include Ryan, Greg, Brad, Jonathan, Kathy Kinny, and Chip. They will play Whose Line and Green Screen Show games and some new ones. The cast is Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, Chip Esten, Jeff B. Davis, Jonathan Mangum, Heather Anne Campbell, and Brad Sherwood, with special guest stars Sean Masterson and Wayne Brady, musical director Bob Derkach, and announcer Rich Fields.
I think part of why Green Screen wasn't as good as Whose Line is because they never really had time to adjust to the difference. If the cast just improvs exactly the same then yeah the animation doesn't add (and may even detract.)
However, if the actors create openings then the animators can create visual gags to add to the comedy. I think Jeff Davis got this the best, especially in later episodes. I seem to recall one with a story about going through the woods? If I can find it...
I dont get this show. if the suggestions are live then how do they know what to put in the background. It would not be very interesting for the audience to watch a green screen
As far as I understood .. they would do the show first in front of the green screen and then the animation was added later. So they could adjust the animations to the actors
I actually found the animation detracted from the show. It was distracting and took the imagination out of the improv (from the viewers perspective anyway)
I find having to use your imagination to follow the improv makes it funnier.
It is improvised just like Whose Line. The animations are added later, ofcourse. In my opinion, the animation takes away pretty much all of the spontaneity that improv brings, the use of your own imagination brings everything to life (think of ryan & colin's Sound Effects skits... legendary!) With the animation someone else takes care of your imagination for you, and this pretty much spoils the fun.
Well, I think the animations take out new sides of the improvisers. Because of the animations they have a duty to use them and not just funny phrases.
the beauty of improvisation is that the actors can make up stuff from air and it's the nothingness they create that makes the audience laugh because it's funny. This greenscreen show is really poor due to all the unnecessary animation.
Yea, I watch Whose Line. I have no idea why Wayne wasn't on this show, but I think Ryan didn't want to be on it because he wanted a break and wanted to watch his kids grow up. But Ryan was on a a pilot episode I believe. Hope this helps
true that. sometimes when they play sound effects you can sort of guess the actor's punch line as reaction to the sound because of the visuals. whose line forever :D
It failed because it was overly expensive. I think it'd be a neat idea for maybe one sketch on whose line to be based on this animated greenscreen. Or maybe one of the cast drawing live at a computer.
That idea for one person to be drawing on a computer live would have been funny. The joke would have gotten old fast thought, but it would have been great.
Again, that was were my joke was. If you ever saw Futurama (not saying you didn't or not), there was a joke that said "Painstaking drawn before a live studio audience". That's why I said it wouldn't be fun for the audience, as the comedians were using stuff that they knew will have greenscreened, but the audience wouldn't see that, all they had to go with was the acting.
Adding lame graphics to Whose Line scenes does NOT make a good show. It just completely kills whatever humor there might have been in the first place. I can't believe Drew actually thought that this concept would work. It violates all that was good in WLIIA. Lame, lame, lame...about the lamest show I've seen in recent years.
Actually the other games they played on this show were pretty funny. There was this one where they were playing, uh, "Freeze Tag" or something (basically everyone would start out doing a scene and then someone would yell "Freeze!" and come and take someone's place, and start a new scene), and people kept yelling before the punchline, even... it was just hilarious...
Anyways, yeah, look around for some other clips, especially Freeze Tag and Sound Effects.

yeah but on whose line the audience has monitors that show them whats on the green screen.
so it's a little different.
here..like stdrange said they add it later so the audience can't see it
