the physics doesn't change at all. However, the predicted orbit on the map screen doesn't account for moving objects. As the moon moves, so does the actual path of your spacecraft. The displayed orbit, however, shows you the path you would take if the moon doesn't move. It's not an issue with physics. Just with prediction on the map.
Hey Kurt! Like pretty much everyone, I really enjoy this series. In my opinion, you should have this to a main series along with FLOB. Also I would like to see you get involved in the mindcrack servers, and you know, doing projects with the other guys (pause, beef, etc). Of course you are free to do what you want and I will watch your stuff anyway, but thats just my personal point of view ;P .
You REALLY need to look up or play EVE online. I think you'd really enjoy it. I'm sure you've heard of it, and if you haven't, you're really missing out. It's super extensive, you'd be amazed.
Here's a serious question. Is that proper physics when you're heading in one direction, and the pull of an object makes you head in the other direction? If it is how fast do you need to be going to avoid being pulled into the orbit of kerbin?
Hey Kurt: i dare you to try to crash into the sun! Just launch off in any direction untill the game puts you into an orbit around the sun, then from there you should be able to smash into it fairly easyly.
KURT: LISTEN UP: THE PHYSICS SYSTEM DIDN'T CHANGE, ONLY THE ORBITAL REFERENCE BODY IN THE ORBIT DRAWING PROGRAM. IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, YOU'LL FIND THAT MOMENTUM IS CONSERVED ACROSS THE CHANGE
The physics system in Kerbin is fairly accurate, the problem you are having is that the map view is switching its point of reference as soon as you enter and leave the Mun's gravitational sphere of influence. So the green line will (try to) show you your trajectory in relation to the closest object. Also when leaving Mun orbit you have to take into account that the Mun is moving around Kerbin and you will inherit the velocity.
@Mocha2007andcoco Isn't that easy? Just get on escape velocity and fast forward a lot. Ofcourse, unless you came back from that distance, then I think it's ... pretty impressive?
New series; Kurt send his astronauts to the nearest kerb(earth) like planet in hope of finding sentient life. With any luck it'll be done a little after farlands.
I just put myself in orbit around the sun by accedent, so you can do that I guess, It's probobly possible to crash into the sun, but I didn't try that
Ah, so I was right. If saw my comment in the last video. By burning on the opposite side of the Mun from Kerbin, you were actually increasing your orbit, around Kerbin. You were burning prograde relative to your orbit around Mun, but you also burned prograde relative to your orbit around Kerbin (by burning in the same direction the Mun was traveling), so once you left the Mun's gravity, you saw your "real" orbit, high apoapsis and all.
Another note, there's nothing wrong with re-entering Kerban atmosphere directly from the Mun; that's how Apollo did it: At about 10km/s velocity as opposed to the 7.7km/s they would have had if they'd burned their way into LEO first.
And pro-tip: Hitting caps-lock will set your controls into a more precise mode, indicated by the control deflection tabs in the lower left turning blue instead of orange.
Also, in terms of the orbital weirdness - the game's orbits are based on being in an object's sphere of influence. Harvester had to choose between a more realistic but more demanding n-body system, or a less realistic but less demanding gravity-switching system. In other words, there's no such thing as a Lagrange point in the Kerbal universe, and you get weird orbit switching like you experienced in the video.
I'd suggest checking out the C-7 Flight Pack (and the experimental stuff from the same guy) if you're doing anything in-atmosphere. They're balanced around in-atmosphere flight, though, so they'll feel too powerful if you take them into space.
Kurt, at reentry turn off SAS and let the capsule align itself thanks to aerodynamics. Just use 'f' key to erase any wobbling now and then. Aside from that you don't need to do anything except deploy 'shut.
@vierkantor actually, having done it many times myself, I can say it requires very little fuel. Just push your apoapsis along Kerbins orbit behind it, and once you are far enough away, done! Solar orbit. It's not an accomplishment, it's a failure.
Actually it isn't accurate, since in reality both kerbin and the mun would be excersising gravitational forces on your ship, the game only handles single body gravitation. (ie. you can only "orbit" one heavenly body at a time"
@cptorangutang2 The game handles both but displays only trajectory for dominant gravity source to keep it simple. It doesn't however project the future trajectory depending on gravity sources movement. It only shows here&now situation.
The direction of motion doesn't change suddenly. Remember that the moon is moving as well, so the moon orbit they show is relative to the moon and not the earth
@Owner2105 Well, there isn't really any drag in space, or any sound. So mach isn't really a good way to measure speed, and because there isn't any drag there isn't really a "top speed" for any spacecraft. And the space shuttle usually comes(or came I suppose you can say now) in at about 8,000 m/s.
@Thermalburn no, you cannot. he wants him to try, and then crash and implode, which is pretty much what happens when you try to get anywhere near the sun / past the moon.
Congratulations Kurt, unfortunately the President of the United Reagencies of Kubania has promised in his latest campaign you will place a Kerban on the Mun in 10 days. Best of luck!

I think the orbital physics *seem* so messed up because of inaccuracies in the projected trajectory. Here are my #{theories} and ({evidence}):
1. It does not account for atmospheric drag. (You have to overshoot your landing spot)
2. It shows what WOULD happen if the object you're currently closest to was the only one in the universe (sudden changes when approaching something)
3. It is drawn RELATIVE to that object (the projection of your lunar orbit "moved" with the moon as IT orbited Kerbin)
