Aside from how successful your training has been, for which you deserve a pat on the back, I am so impressed with how gently you speak to your dog. Truly, you are a great example for other men who might think they have to be "firm" as they cue their dogs. As a trainer, I often get asked why a dog behaves for the husband of the family and not the wife or children. I usually find that the man has been more harsh. Once we remove that, we can get the dog behaving for all members of the family.
@mdorosz1 - Hey Melissa! Yes, she really liked those hot dogs, but impulse control is what she always needs practice with. It's difficult for her, because she's always so eager to do stuff with us. Hard to -wait-. But she loves these games, because she knows, that she wins. She always wins. It's always just a matter of WHEN. And that makes it interesting. thanks for the comment!
@TheLilScarab - Thanks! Yes, she's smart and the more she learns, the faster she learns it. They say they learn how to learn. First two years we learned and trained one Dog Dance Choreo per year. For the up-coming season, we'll have two ready, that's how fast she learns. Would you guess, that I'm a little bit proud of her? ;-))
Wow, you have meaningful influence over your dog, throw away the clickers and treats you don't need them anymore. I guess you have the right personality type and cognitive processes happening.
@dalemk90 - In a true partnership with one's dog, both have influence over each other. Sometimes we do what I want, sometimes we do what she wants. If we MUST do it my way, we will do it HER way later. I see myself more as the head of the family, striving to help my dog reach her fullest potential, but without using force, pain or intimidation. My goal is to share my life with her, not dominate her.
As to clickers - why in the WORLD would I give up on a system of teaching that has brought the two of this far together. I actually only use the physical clickers when introducing certain specific behaviors with usually have to do with fine motor controll in a chaining situation. But as soon as the behavior is learned, I drop the clicker and move to a vocal secondary marker, later moving on to an intermediary marker, all conditioned long ago. Clicker are not the focal point. Co-operation is.
A very observant viewer pointed out, that I'm not just doing "leave", but also "wait" in conjunction with food, not motion. 10 points and a gold medal to that person!
That was amazing! Great job to the both of you! :)
