  • awesome effect!! sounds like an organ!!

  • Anyone know what kinda effect pedal shes using?that makes it sound kinda organ-y?

  • @johnnyzzz231 it's an octaver, maybe you could check the electro harmonix pog2 if you're in for a organ sound.

  • @johnnyzzz231 its a Digitech Whammy pedal

  • where can i download this exact version of the song legally...?

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!I love her

  • haunting

  • i want to live in DUMBO so bad!!!! the big art influence there is awesome.

  • but seriously, how is that left ring finger empty?

  • she signed my friend's bra :)

  • @pianoflames does she sign annie clark or st. vincent?

  • Buckley is arguably a better singer and Annie arguably a better guitarist, but their solo performances are both amazing

  • @Nakkinak Clark is a million times better as a song writer. Which is the main thing.

  • the woman jeff buckley... wonderful.

  • This was the very first St. Vincent video I saw. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • I love the duel microphones! Such a great effect, and so practical too! Anyone know what she's stomping on? I hear a little Jeff Buckley in the guitar parts, that mixed with French carnival music. Hauntingly beautiful.

  • Its the same as when you dream your initial response changes as your brain switches from one to another "state" what seemed profound becomes superfluous the feminine genius can "sleepwalk in places that men fear to tread

  • A prodigy

  • wonderful MUSIC!!!!

  • heaven's music

  • poetry is a spam :-)

  • Im a lesbian now.

  • The "dance fair Paris" part reminds me of Carmagnole!

  • @kyledahl I get what you are saying because songs change meaning for me a lot of times, but I always get curious as to what the performer's lyrics mean and what they're talking about. It allows me more insight into their worlds.

  • I like this version than the one of the record.

  • so amazing she is the only one that could pull this off , I kind of miss the curls

  • dude she is so amazing only her could pull of this performance, and i kind of miss the curls

  • So good to see a musician devoted to quiet complexity, and a lyricist who thinks in terms of the subtler emotions, be recognized. Annie Clark will be great long after her beauty ceases to be a major selling point.

  • I still want to marry her.

  • dunno why, but she looks like a female bret mckenzie imo. but yeah, this song is amazing.

  • @pleasedontask it's the eyebrows

  • Her voice reminds me of Beth Gibbons from Portishead...I consider that the best of compliments :)

  • @Gloominusdm me too! :)

  • got rid of lows on eq

  • so wonderfultasteriffical.

  • Can anyone explain to me what sort of microphone Annie is using or the effect she has to make her voice sound like that?

  • @StephenDeFilippo

I asked my audio production teacher about the microphone she uses, he said it's effects which make her voice sound like that, it's doesn't have too much to do with the microphone. I can't recall what effects you need to get your voice like that but I remember he said something about turning the highs off.

  • @StephenDeFilippo

She is using a secondary microphone, nothing special about it, but with effects on it separate from the main microphone.

It seems to have a stationary filter on it that is cutting out certain frequencies making it sound like it is degraded as if by older radio transition.

Look into band/low/high pass filters for that kind of effect.

  • @StephenDeFilippo

    Some reverb too possibly.

  • Awesome. What great talent. Very rare to see an artist who writes their own material. She's amazing.

  • @Virginia78704 -- No, it's not. You are just looking in the worng places... like the billlboard top 40. The internet has made it easier than ever to discover REAL musicians. And someone has to write those pop songs, and often time they are legit musicians making a living. You just hear their songs butchered by business men and sung by some marketable talentless blonde bimbo.

  • OHHH her voice! I wish that she could cover all of my favorite songs. I wish her all the best. Her ingenuity leaves a person at a stand still. She conveys an immensity in her music...Thank you to St. Vincent for continuing and continuing with music.

Also, my major compliments to whomever filmed/edited this video.

  • whats that silver mic she's using?

  • How could anybody watch this video and not be in love?

  • I had no trouble posting this comment whatsoever.

  • I am commenting! Whee! This was easy.

  • I think I watched this video about a 100 times today!!

    can't get enough!!

  • Makes me happy such a unique talent got some exposure on that level, my dislike for so you think you can dance has lessened a smidge...

  • @soccerdutchess i just heard it on so you think you can dance 2 minutes ago and i loved it

  • @soccerdutchess same! :D

  • @soccerdutchess same here.

  • Her playing is amazing. You can see how much she feels as she performs.

  • Flamenco Organ Guitar, I love this woman...

  • why do the crowd look so bored! i'd be goin mental! WOOO!!!!

  • @hannahmoulden They're probably stunned. I know very well how that feels!

  • i can't believe someone wearing those shoes is playing guitar that well

  • : ¬{=)

    Incredible....

  • did anyone see the helicopter at the end? wtf?

  • @axavierd

    yah- cool-available-accident?

  • so... hello everyone :) i just posted a cover of this song! pls check it out!

  • genesis?

  • @leviatan130 as in justice?

  • for the person that said she invented the stomp box you are totally mistaken. other people have been using them for years and tons of people make them...

st. vincent is pretty awesome though...I'm new to her stuff

  • @albadk1229 yeah that would be like claiming that i invented shoes

  • @albadk1229 Yeah, that's strange that someone said such a thing. She said in an interview once that she assembles her own, not that she invented it.

  • I love how she makes the guitar into a harpsichord/one woman orchestra!

  • I think it would sound good with organ

  • this reminds me of pierrot lunaire slightly

and no I don't think it is a cover

  • what's that black rectangle on the floor that she hits with her foot? it s connected with all the sound stuff..

  • @gonzalognzl... It's a book.

  • Annie invented it. It allows her to add some percussion when she plays her guitar solo. She calls it something like a 'stomp box' or 'stomp pad' . Is she a goddess or what?!

  • this is just about the coolest thing ever.

  • @zachs51, They sound 'gay'?

  • You're an idiot.

  • that was so amazing i'm not sure if I can breathe. PLEASE tell me this is her original and not a cover and she plays it live.. like next week at Lincoln center?!?!

  • wish i could have the mp3 of this.. Gungrand u is right! way better live and raw..

  • HMM I CAN MAKE IT INTO AN MP3 FOR YOU :) would u like that?

  • YES YES YES YES!! did i say that enough? would be beyond grateful!!

  • send me ur email :)

  • Once again, stunned. I can't believe the huge talent hiding beneath that pretty face. I really hope she tours Europe soon... Does anybody know something?

  • Holy shit

  • ultimate femininity

  • i'm getting in touch with the 4th dimension

  • This woman is amazing

  • got goosebumps; love her.

  • if only this amount of heart and simplicity was in the albums. unfortunately, they are over produced, rushed, and just lack the intimacy.

  • Good god.

That was the greatest 5 minutes I have ever spent.

  • Sounds like she's got some octave effect on the gutiar. It really thickens the sound.

  • most excellent use of an octave pedal.

  • Poly octave :D

  • Yay! Originality!

  • I like how this song has a dark, different vibe.

  • Hauntingly beautiful!!! It's very, very impressive that her singing did not interfere with her guitar playing. Very cleverly done!

  • I'm in LOVEEEE

  • Brought me to tears. Incredible

  • Seeing her tomorrow opening for Andrew Bird. So excited ^^

  • whoa like scary good

  • I definitely think this is one of her best songs. I still can't get over that melody.

  • If we were living in a civilization she would be the biggest star in the world

  • Your comment kinda blows my mind. Yet, I'm inclined to agree.

  • she's lovely and awesome and is wearing miniskirt. and that beats even Barney

  • She's using an electro harmonix POG, you can see it in the video. You can also achieve a similar effect with a digitech whammy on the plus octave up function with the guitar's volume rolled back to about 5. Listen to the intro of My Iron Lung by radiohead for to hear the digitech.

  • you're absolutely amazing. I can't wait to see you some day soon

  • you are beautiful st vincent ;)

  • she's using a octave effect in guitar

  • i want to know what kind of effect she is using on that guitar. that sounds so incredible. i thought it was like an organ or something on the album.

  • Probably an Electro Harmonix POG or HOG pedal. Could be a bunch of other octave-pedals though.

  • This is one of the neatest songs I've ever heard. I love the guitar in it. I prefer this version over the album one.

  • girl is special to say the least.

  • hey come on u 2 is verry tallented

  • yeah man whatever you say

  • shit.. never thought Ide become a stalker.

  • people...try the acoustic version at la blogotheque...awesomer

  • I really the outro of the song

  • the words, Love or Like we're missing.

  • i would marry her based solely on this video alone

  • uh YEA! Definatly

  • Me, too.

  • @BrandNew23 ya need 2 have ur brains checked.

  • @BrandNew23 redundant

  • a bicha é foda mesmo

  • Im buying this girls cd. I hope she gets bigger..we need talent back in todays music industry.

And I would love to do this girls make up by th way

  • Yes we do need talent, there is zero on the radio, absolutely NONE!

  • agreed.

  • The guitar work at the beginning brought me to tears

  • The most beautiful and amazing song I have ever heard, she is amazing.

  • I play her music on my show, and I usually play bands from Vancouver. Obviously a unique talent too good to pass up even if she isn't local.

  • amazing, so psychedelic and jazzy

  • hahah, look how depressed the audience looks. They are all trying to look fashionable, and cool, like they don't give a fuck about anything.

  • They're just watching and listening.

  • i hate indie hipster crowds

  • i know.. no one is even bobbing their heads to the music..

  • Ah la verga esta buenisimo!!!!!

  • I like.

  • Amazing. Not often I hear a fusion of Fairport Convention+Jethro Tull+Kate Bush+ Classic 12 string Guitar (except w/KIng Cimson ,which I also hear) + Bjork on a serious bend+early Genesis melodies (aka w/Peter Gabriel).

  • Except she uses a pedal to make her Telecaster sound like it had 12 strings. I have an ES-335/12 and its natural "12 strings sound effect" is much more subtle than what you can get with such this electronic one.

  • Its a Polyphonic Octave Generator by EHX

  • huh?

  • I think you're looking a bit too far into this.

  • what kind of mic is that?

  • that is great...i am so mad . she was at webster hall tonight and i thought it was tommorow..i want ot shoot my self

  • i cant get enough of this version

  • She kind of reminds me of DIamanda Galas, minus the shrieking.

  • i think shes stomping on a piece of wood with a microphone under it, sure is a good idea

  • she's a gift to the world and my ears!

  • I love this stuff. I'm a big fan of music that is sweet and pretty and a little f'ed up too :)

  • she was so awesome at the Sasquatch festival in the goarge

  • Refreshing cascading emotive honest and creative. Hope all who are moved are honest and pony up to buy the cd.

  • Ladyhakwe FTW!

  • i never post comments but that was intense.

  • I don't understand why this album had to be all fiddled with, her songs so good, so much more interesting when they're stripped down to her live versions.

  • I like both versions for different reasons. The album is produced very well.

  • she is even more epic live in person.

  • i am absolutely in love with this song. I have NEVER heard anything like this before! It makes me think of Tim Burton's movies and dancing xD Your Awesome!

  • I am in love with this girl

what kindve microphone is she using for that warbly affect?

  • this is beauty

  • I don't think that that is true, but even if it is, who cares? If it's good, what does it matter her background?

  • yeah because only rich people go to music school

  • She went to Berklee, and you are a hilarious cunt.

  • you can tell that is an assumption, and that you have no clue what your talking about. that is not a classical guitar, it's a telecaster. She is finger picking, that does not mean she is playing flamenco

but i guess all those Spanish and Italian people who actually have played and learned classical in the 15th century would have to be rich?

  • Where can I go to audtion in her band!? She's an amazing musician!

  • BONNAROO!!!!!!!!!!!! 2009

  • my god, this song is stuck in my head since the first time i heard it...

  • in love

  • shes wow telented

  • I wana marry her

  • Such a great song!

We can't wait to see her at sxsw this year...

    xo

  • oh my i can't believe i forgot about this song!!! it's so unique...i wish i could hear more music like this :) (this her best song of them all!{to me})

  • i agree. her best song.

  • This song is amazing. I wish the video was just from one camera, though. The terrible editing is distracting...

  • i like this version better than the album version, its really cool.

its kinda cute how her shoe's unstrapped at 1:50 hehe

  • this is such a great song, and i really love this version of it.

  • She's just awesome in her own right. Beautiful!

  • does anyone else listen to this and think "the female equivalent of buckley"? i mean that in a good way.
