From 1920 - 1967 the NHL was a pick up league of 6 to 8 teams. The NHL expanded in 1968 but the league was still forming up till 1980. Some greatness was shown by the Flyers, Habs and the Bruins but that was it! Like it or not the real NHL started in 1980. The Original six league was a pick up league.
