  • I was pissed when Emmo didn't win this race I mean no disrespect to Arie but this was an upset. Fittipaldi sat on the pole & blistered the track all day, clearly had the best car...

  • Arie later said that Fittipaldi was pestering him at the end, trying to unlap himself, and he didn't want to deal with the distraction. When Emmo passed him on the mainstretch, Arie says he didn't see the white flag. Back then they didn't have spotters and didn't talk much on the radio, so he didn't know it was the last lap. Seeing the checkers the next time around was a pleasant surprise.

  • Amazing, at 2:20 Paul Page/Sam/Bobby stay quiet for almost a full two minutes (over two laps) and just let the race unfold on its own. No blabber-mouth, no "Boggity" no mindless babble. They just let the beautiful sounds of those turbo engines tell the story.

And who needed all those overbearing graphics? It's nice to know the standings, but back then we got full-screen views all the time, and we still knew who was leading.

  • Those fly-by shots at the beginnin of the video are friggin' awesome.

  • This was a sweet win.

  • great news btw Chevrolet, and Lotus/Cosworth will be back for 2012 and of course Turbo chargers

  • Wow, what an upset! What greater way to win your very first Indy Car race than to win the biggest of them all!

  • Arie Luyendijk was a fearless driver. He was the king of speed at Indy. His qualifying records and his record for 500 miles still stand today and may stand for years to come.

  • Great to hear the commentating team of Paul Page, Bobby Unser and Sam Posey again! Page's passion for the race always came through and listening to Bobby and Sam argue about things was always fun too. The commentating team they have now does a reasonable job but I miss these days.

  • I was at the race last year (2009) and EVERY car had Honda on the air inlet.. I miss all the Chevy, Buicks etc.. The sounds of those cars is one of the things that made Indy INDY. Now they sound more like NASCAR.

  • @Iamyurdaddy

You're not the only one who missed the Golden age of the Indy 500. The sleek cars, the super cool engine sounds, top notch commentators, and an allure that made every serious American racecar driver sit up and take notice. Even F1 felt threatened by the IndyCar Series of old. How else do you explain a reigning F1 champion leaving to compete here in 93?

Tony George really screwed up by trying to run things his way. Yea, thanks TG. And Nascar thanks you too.

  • @LaserX5 You're right Laser! Tony George's ego and incompetence has probably ruined a once great racing series for life!

  • I miss Paul Page doing the play by play. He's got all of the good stories.

  • truly beautiful.

    It couldn't happen nowadays :(

    a) because 2 minutes is about the biggest gap between adds!

    b) cars don't sound spellbinding anymore

    but mainly because of

    c) marty reid and the dumb ESPN jerks would be talking and joking and treating the 500 like some sort of weekend joke sport.

  • 2:21- 4:08 = official soundtrack of my childhood

  • same here :) miss it so much

  • @XXformula same here...

  • i go to school with arie's two twin son's

  • Arie's holding of nearly every speed record is one of the reasons he is still known as "The Flying Dutchman!!!" Always has, and always will be one of my heroes of the speedway.

  • Luyendyk put on a clinic that day. The Shierson team was small but mighty. In the last 20 years the only comparable effort was Count Tracula's.

  • 5:36 shows the neat pitside fuel tank...painted to look like a Coca-Cola can.

Great broadcast won a Sports Emmy that year...however, again terrible camera work at the finish. They picked up Fittipaldi by mistake from the Tower Terrace camera...then cut to the flagman...and we never saw Arie cross the finish line....a preview of the 1992 finish camera debacle.

  • "He Turned Last Lap at 217.8 He is Flying" thats was famous line from paul page.

  • These cars look a lot better than the cars of today.

  • A clinic in hauling major ass, unreal!

  • Indy car racing was the bomb until Tony George's ego ruined it.

  • yep.. tony george is the anti christ.

  • Arie was fantastic. He is still the fastest man on Indy with a qualifying record of 237.498 mph in 1996.

  • You Go ARIE !!!! Now We Have Your Son Arie Jr, ripping up the tracks..Followed his Racing all last Season with Indy Lights..OH..I HAVE A FEELING HE'LL BE IN THIS ELITE CIRCLE LIKE DAD..Keep Going Arie..

  • Arie Luyendyk is very underestimated in Holland, but he is one of the best Holland have to offer on racing area.

  • DUTCH BOY!!!

  • 1.The word on the street is turbos in 2010

2.This win was a popular one.

  • There's that music at the end again. I've got to have that music!

  • those indy cars back then sounded much better than they do now. and i dont really even know that much about indy.

  • You gotta love seeing a driver's first win.

  • Three words Tony: TURBOS in 010!

  • Awesome sound.

Bring back the Turbo Chevy/Ford V8s.

    Screw Honda/Yoda.

  • agreed, todays IRL cars look more like F1 cars than IndyCars. Man why did Tony George have to ruin openwheel racing in America. I mean it's good that they were finaly able to reconcile after all this time but man, the time and things that have been lost...

  • An Indy car looks TOTALY different then a F1 car! Those two cars just cannot be compared!

  • Btw: Those days the Indycars were more simulair to F1 cars then nowadays.

  • Honda is one of the companies supporting the unified IndyCar Series.

  • Don't forget the Buick Turbo V6's as well back then.

  • @fleshwoundNPG chevy and lotus are making their return for 2012 with v6 turbos, though honda will remain unfortunately

  • Mrs Luyendyk has some juicy lips!

  • albers and lammers aren't that bad either.

2.5 years in f1 and a top dtm driver and lammers was great on le mans and in f1 with bad cars

  • I wish they'd bring back that #30 Domino's "Hot One". One of the most beautiful cars in the history of racing.

  • God, I love those wallside cameras on the ends of turns 2 and 4!

  • The average speed was record:

    185.981 MPH

    299.307 KPH

  • This was a great 500. Personally, I have seen everyone since 1985. To answer a question below....The Meadowlands GP stopped running around 1991 or 1992.

Truthfully, everything in open wheel racing is about the 500. It is a shame to see the race held hostage by dumbass Tony George. Maybe you could reignite the rivalry between Newman-Haas and Ganassi but with a twist. AGR!

Reunite before the rednecks take over American racing.

  • Too late.

  • Tire are smaller on "inside" to get faster...

  • It was, is, and will always be about the Indy 500. Something the whine and cheese crowd doesn't seem to get.

less than 3 weeks I will see my 35th 500, they are all good!

  • Defender is that you? God you are a fucking idiot. The whine and cheese crowd has left Champ Car, they all own teams in the IRL. Have fun loser.

  • Go watch the start of the 1996 US 500 and see what the cars and stars did. Good thing CART had a redo.

Quick, who won the 1952 Indy 500? Answer, Troy Ruttman, youngest winner at age 22.

Quick, who won the 1993 Meadowlands Grand Prix?

Answer? Who the heck would know? Indy Car racing has always been about the Indy 500, the other races are just gravy, that is my point. What is yours, other than your a bonehead?

  • The Meadowlands GP stopped in 1992

And Indy Car racing isn't just about the 500, what about the races at Long Beach, Cleveland, Surfers Paradise, and Milwaukee

  • Look at how clean those cars are, how small the wings are. No flugels or winglets on the sidepods. With so little downforce your line had to be perfect if you wanted to be fast. Things are a little different today of course...

  • Look at how close the driver was to the nose of the car.

  • shows how brave the drivers were and much more dangerous these cars were just 5,10 years ago.

  • Why are we guys mad at Tony George? Do you have a few hours? He personally screwed everything up. Period. You have to be blind to not see that.

  • Great sound.

That's what I never got about the IRL. What the hell needed 'fixing' with that noise and those cars???

  • que pena que eu era muito novo nessa época maravilhosa

I agree with you dudes, champcar4ever

  • Does anyone who is driving that Orange car that Arie passes on the frontstretch at around 3:10?

  • i believe it was roberto guerrero --

  • It's John Andretti. Guererro was running for Pat Patrick in the Alfa Romero that year.

  • are you a member on tbk?

  • Yes, I'm the one who also posted over there.

  • I love the few laps that the commentators didn't speak...kind of serene listening to the turbo Chevy...Thanks CC!

  • you got this from tbk.

  • Not really. Check out the post dates. It's the other way around but it doesn't matter. Same person.

  • Thanks for this clip, champcar4ever.

  • Its a new race speed record! :)

  • Very nice

  • God I miss the way Indy used to be. Thanks Tony George for totally screwing up the Indy 500 and all of American Professional Open wheel racing. You dunce.

  • Simple F-A-S-T... 8-)

    Thanks again CC, great addition!
