Great sound. Steam personified! Yes, the Royal Hudson is the 2860 (1974) and the 3716 is the back up (aka The Provincial Museum Train). The 3716 was refurbished to first participate as part of the bicentennial (1976) Freedom Train across the US. The 3716's stack was modified for the "Grey Fox" movie. Both the whistles and the refurbishments of both engines were done by my late father Robert (Bob) Swanson. He was the Drake Street Shop! When he died in 1994 that's when things went haywire.
The two royal locomotive numbers are #2850 and #2851 and were painted royal blue, dark blue and aluminum. Red royal crowns were placed on the running boards of the locomotive as well as the tender and coaches. The tender and coaches were painted to match.
B.C. Rail has never operated the Royal Hudsons. They operate a hudson class locomotive 4-6-4. The Royal Hudsons (which there were only two) are the locomotives that were used to pull the Royal Family of Britain's train across Canada. They are not painted in the origional maroon paint of CP Rail but painted in royal blue and carry the Royal Family's crown emblem above the head light.
@inteldell01 Actually the entire 2800 class was designated "Royal Hudson" and were entitled to have the crown symbol on the running board. Therefore while 2860 is not THE Royal Hudson, it is A "Royal Hudson".
3716 is running, The KVR put her into service after a restoration in 2005 (I think). There are too many in Canada to name, but from what i can tell, most are located in western Canada. The well known ones are 2860, 2816, 3716, 6060 among others. There are also smaller railways such as Fort Steele (where I work as a fireman on the railway) which runs a small 4km run with a small 2-6-2 #1077.
The 1077? Nope, it was built in Canada in 1923 by the Montreal Locomotive Works (Same company who built 2816, 2860, 3716 and 6060). It served as a logging Locomotive on Vancouver Island until 1969 when the BC government acquired it.
the 3716 is not a royal hudson. the royal hudsons were Canadian Pacific's streamlined 4-6-4's numbered 2820-2864. 3716 is a 2-8-0. 3716 was filling in for 2860 from 1999 until the end of the tours in 2001 since the crew who was running things didn't know what they were doing and messed up the boiler on 2860, and eventually messed up 3716 too.
wow take it easy, calm down, just saying that 3716 is not the royal hudson, if it said that on the ticket im not saying your wrong if thats the info you were given
3716 was the second steam engine used on the run when 2860 was in the shop. I believe its now up in Summerland while 2860 is in the Squamish railway park.
You are absolutely correct.....the 3716 is not a Royal Hudson. Actually it is a "Consolidation" type used mainly in it's active years as a freight locomotive. A dependable machine but certainly not as pretty or as powerful as the Royal Hudsons.
...wish i coulda rode the RH lawlz. who owns the vancouver-squamish line now, CN?
