@dancegypsy8 Check out this wonderful documentary on the Romany trail (Latcho Drom, Part 3 of 10 on you tube). This film takes the viewer on a journey from India to Spain, to dramatize Romany's nomadic culture, including Egypt. My dance is a FUSION dance which incorporates some Egyptian Ghawazee influence, mainly the finger cymbals and shimmies.
Having left North-Western India about 1,000 years ago gypsies settled in Europe, Egypt, North Africa, etc. There were gypsies who belly danced in Egypt! They were called the Ghawazee gypsies of Egypt. There are many types of gypsy dance since the gypsies traveled and left their impression throughout many countries. Belly dance has gypsy roots. Please check out the very moving documentary, "Lotcho Drom".
I don't think there is such thing as "perfect bellydance body" i also dont think that bellydancers should be judge for their bodies but their skills, i have seen amazing bellydancers that are really really thin
Hi Daleela, I loved your zill playing! Your zill playing and your dance are very entertaining, nice work! I have a question or two for you: how long have you been playing zills? how often should I practice and for how long to get to the point you are at? I understand it is individual and may be hard to tell, but I wanted to see what you did to get to your level of zill playing. Thanks for sharing, bdancenj
Thanks for the nice compliment. I have been playing for about 15 years. I also studied classical piano for about 10 years as a child and I think that make it easier for me to learn the different zill rhythms. I recommend taking lessons from teachers who teach choreographies with zills and getting Hossam Ramzy's CD's and DVD's on the different rhythms.
You delighted my hart. When you dance on your toes you look like floating. And, you keep perfect rythm with the finger cimbals ("castañuelas" in spanish, but made of wood). So beautiful. Let me watch again! L.O.L.
You are a fabulous Zill player. I really liked your dance. I'm not being critical of your skills here, but I think that you should wear something else when doing gypsy style...like a cute, blousy choli with a vest and a flowing gypsy skirt...maybe a coin belt or hip scarf..think it would go better with the music and the style.
Thank you for your lovely comment on my zill playing. Yes, in the future I plan on wearing a gypsy skirt. In this particular performance I was stuck with the costume I had on for the previous dance. There was simply no time to change. But, those were my thoughts exactly. A gypsy costume would add a lot to the dance.
Hi Daleela, A beautiful dance! What is the music? I love the pauses - you move very gracefully while using the zills. Why is this dance called Gypsy belly dance?
Thank You Barbara, the music is from Ibrahim El Samahy's, Moon Over Cairo,Volume 1. Like Flamenco, belly dance is a gypsy dance in origin, although there are many styles today. Because of the belly dance's origins as a gypsy dance and because of the finger cymbals I use, I decided to call this particular choreography: gypsy belly dance. Thanks for watching!
it's great to see such beautiful, elegant dancing combined with such expert zill playing! love that sound! (in most videos they seem to get drowned out by the music)
My god she's pretty talented with those cymbals!

This is a nice dance and good finger cymbal skills but I do not see any Romani styling in this dance
