Thank you for posting this..i came down with it about 5 days ago,,I can't imagine having it for a whole yr! we do take simple things for granted...what I would give right now to just be able to blink my eye!
I don't have BP nor do I know anyone with it. I just stumbled upon this video and I'd like to say that I think people with BP probably really enjoy seeing this. It was a fantastic video.
I'm verging on 3 months with no mobility yet....Thank you for your encouraging video. I've just returned to work and I deal with the public. It's hard, but hey, I can still walk and talk and I'm grateful that this isn't life-threatening.
Being on day 6 (I symbolically start counting from Christmas day, even though some symptoms occurred earlier, and the paralysis started only on the 27th), all I can say is merci Shashanounou :-)
I had Bell's Palsy three years ago and I'm still fighting to have my face as normal as possible. My eye doesn't close when I blink, like the other. The most difficult is how the people judge me for that. They laugh, they make fun for something that happens suddenly. I tried acumpuncture, fisio...If you know any new method or threatment, please, share here.
Please let me know how is your face this days is there any more progress?? or it will be more progress only slower.. Doctors tell me that could be more progress about a mmltr every week :) please let me know how are you!
Hi, first of all great vid (really lifted me up) i was diagnosed with bell's palsey only yesterday' i have been put on steroids and antivirol drugs but would love to know if there is anything that i can do to help me recover ?. THANKS
ooooohhhh THANK YOU for this video! I laughed til I cried at the small things you did in this video that have scared me to death. I am one week in with Bells Palsy and being my time I thought I had a stroke. It was nice to laugh with you.
You are a peach Shashanounou. If anyone who cared about you BEFORE you contracted BP ever had a doubt about the kind of person you are at heart, their doubts were blown away by your outlook in dealing with the 'unexpected'.
I just got it Bells Palsy yesterday came on in a matter of hours out of nowhere. I thought it was a stroke. I listen to the doctors diagnosis with scared anticipation as he said the diagnosis, I was waiting to hear stroke, severe allergy, etc. I hadnt ever heard of such a thing, than when he mentioned treatment or recovery the fear grew over me as I anticipated if he was going to say no recovery, questionable, etc. He said and I now have read prognosis is good but long recovery.
I was just diagnosed last night with Bell's Palsy, it came on so suddenly! Thank you for taking the time to post such a well put together, informative and reassuring video. *Hugz*
I got it almost 14 years ago. I never fully got back all motion. The most improvemet happens during the first year and after that it kind of slows down. I have accepted it now though... Great Video!!! :)
@undergroundcollab Me too. Got it 18 years ago and I was one of those rather unfortunates who got to keep it as it was such a severe case. Now I have the BP side of my face ageing more than the left side. Always hate going out in public now.
Thank you for making this video, I come from a rural part of Nova Scotia, where most people have never heard of B. P. I came down with it about a week ago (July 19 2010) from what I have learned online; it looks like it will be a long battle! I also cried when i watched this video, because I thought I was one of a kind, but now, I know that I am not standing alone!!!!!!!!!!! Again thank you
Thank you for this video. I have had Bell's Palsy for like 4 days now so it's not too bad. I can still control both my eyes and smile but it looks kind of crooked. But I feel horrible and ugly. Even considered suicide. But watching this gives me hope and even if I do have to love with this for a whole year. I'll just try to remain healthy and pray. Thank you so much for posting this. And you're right, we do take a whole lot forgranted that we should not.
This made me cry a lot; am coming up on one year and I can't do what you have conquered. I am happy for your progress and am still holding out hope.Still using straws, mouthwash won't work, but worst of all, I can't kiss my kids with my full lips, I can't blow their food when it's too hot, and sadly I couldn't blow out my one birthday candle. I do realize how blessed I am though for everything else I DO have. But once in a while, this illness brings me down. I am trying to accept the new me!
I've had it a year now and although great improvement. When I yawn my eye like closes and I have dizzy spells now. But it sucks man and hope that those who have it now keep your chin up you'll see improvement. I cried alot of nights without anybody knowing it sucked. But it will get better. Maybe not 100 percent but it will get better.
So appreciated this video. The shot of you trying to use mouthwash is very familiar to me now. lol.
I started the symptoms a few days ago, 19th June 2010, and have been prescribed the steroid Prednisolone. I'm feeling a bit self conscious, but thank goodness its summer so I can wear sunglasses to hide my unblinking eye.
I know that once I get my face moving, I will never again complain about my wrinkles and laughter lines, but appreciate them for what they are!
im turning 18 in a month and have had bell's palsy for six years. i signed up for an account just to tell you how amazing you are. Mine is almost gone except little things that i notice every day, my life still revolves around it and people do take little things like a smile for granted. I pretend i dont have it, that i never did, it doesnt make it easier. i think accepting it will be the only way to be okay and i may not get my old smile back but be happy with my new one . Thank you so much
I too have been suffering the effects of Bells for two and a half years now. This video made me laugh and then cry.... i really just want my smile back. I know there are worse things in this world that could have happened, but my smile was a huge part of me and now its gone. I cant even bear to look at old pictures of me. It makes my heart ache.
@Shashanounou WOW ! Your video made me cry and smile in the same time....specially because 3 days ago I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. It is strange for me to see that it takes so long because the doctor told me it will go away in about 3 to 6 weeks. Jeez, I thought that is a way too long time for me, but after I saw your video I wish everything will go away in 3 or 6 weeks and not more. The doctor gave me Prednisone and B-6 Vitamin.
Thank you soo much for this video. It has given me hope. Tomarrow will mark the 8th week of having Bells Palsy. I was getting really discouraged. I've never heard of this before. However, its more common than we think. Its somewhat of a comfort to know that i'm not the only one, and there is hope for full recovery.
this was the perfect video for me...i just was diagnosed mon., 5/3 and it's been 4 days now...i can't believe you've had to deal with this for a YEAR, god bless you! i laughed and cried while watching and really appreciate your attitude and advice. thank you so much for doing this!!!!!
im in love with you! I just got bell's palsy last week April 20th 2010 and it was heartbreaking until i looked at your videos! Lets make bell palsy babies lol!
I had bells pallsy when I was 15, and a few months ago, when I'm 33. My recovery took 4 weeks when I was 15, and just 3 weeks from the second one. I can say, I'm lucky, how quick my recovery was... Hope you all recover soon!
I've had it for 3 and 1/2 years now and it's sucks because I hoped to not have to start high school like this but what can you do? It's not really fair is it?
Any one have any advice on how to help recovery other than the normal things?
This video meant so much to me when i got bell's palsy!!! i got bell's palsy in november 2009 and i am still recovering!! it's been 5 months and my face is soo much better! so if you have this believe me it gets better! i went into a deep depression when i first got it, but looking back now i wouldn't have changed anything because it made me grow as a person, and taught me not to take things for granted!! if you have this condition keep your head up!! its gets better!!!
@Ska8907 hi same thing happened to me in jan2010 and it was a catosrophe for me it knocked me for six ! it was like a trumor, but all the youtube videos and info helped soooo much good luck to you, hope u get fully recovered. i am now 4 months and starting to feel better but my eye still doesnt blink guess i wil have to wait longer, docot suggested they sew my eye corner together but im not sure to go for it or not? thanks for your comments too and that girl in vedio is great!

I've just been diagnosed with BP for 2 days . Please tell me what medications and/or treatments you used. he dER doc put me on Medrol (steroids) 6 day pack and an antiviral med. for 3 days. I'd like to hear what helps please.
I have been diagnosed with BP for just under a week now and thought I'd try Youtube. This made me laugh: I too need to stop spraying the bathroom with mouthwash! But it also made me cry to know that there are other people who are just the same. It just takes a little strength and patience to get through this.
Tho only been a week now, It really makes you appreciate the things we take for granted. (you don't know what youve got til its gone)
PS they were tears of emotion - not the usual BP tears!
Thanks so much for your cheery, funny, realistic video series on Bell's Palsy. I just got it January 15, 2009 and you give me hope and understanding. I keep finding out things affected. Till I saw you video I didn't realize I couldn't whistle! Thanks from all of your fellow/sister Bell Pals! Lily
i cant stop smiling when i see your video, im not alone... its already 15 months since bell's got me.. im bored answering every question about my face........... but now i know that im not alone..
i know exactly how you feel.. ive had Bell's Palsy all my life and it gets annoying when people ask you "whats wrong with your mouth or eye?" mine has improved alot over the years and its almost not noticeable unless i talk, smile(ive learned how to control my smile)drink out of a straw, etc. btw" i think its kewl i can lift one eyebrow lol" and i can close both eyes.
i will nvr 4 get when i had bells palsey and she is wright we do take things 4 granted and i laughed when i saw her do the mouth wash because that when i found out that i had it and people its funny 4 like 2 days but afeter like a month or 2 it gets realy gay so dnt make fun of us because we get a viral infection that we cnt controll but 4 anybody that has this infection just take your time and dnt make it a big deal its easyer said then done trust me i was 16 so trust me it gets btr just time
I am currently on my 5th day of bells palsy. .so you should know what I am live atm....But some reason I feel so much sadness and happiness when watching your video... Mix feelings confused... dont know what do nor what will happen to me..
try not to worry I had bells palsy aswell I felt so low and down and just Wanted someone to tell me it was ok and that my face would go bk to normal and it did took 4 weeks but it went back I read a book about it and said the best thing was to train ur brain when looking in the mirror imagine ur face as normal moving it slighty tho not too severe as u dont want to damage anything move ur face into place not too much though each day I done this and eventualy mines went away good luck xxxx
This is the most amazing video I've ever seen! It's been almost 7 years for me. My eye still closes when I swish with mouthwash and every now and then it spits out! haha I watched this like 10 times
I had Bells palsy for 2 days now.. I wish it would gone too soon... I was so paranoid thinking I was stroke.., nice video..I also experienced the mouthwash
Thanks for the video. It made me laugh (especially the mouthwash spitting part). I'm on my second day of paralysis on my left side and just starting to realize what a pain in the behind BP can be. I just went out to lunch and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to eat my sandwich without getting booted from the restaurant! I managed and with out biting my lip so that was good. Again thanks for the vid. BTW: yer pretty cute!!
Merry Christmas to you! Great video. You made me cry. One of my best friends woke up 8 days ago suffering from BP. She is strong willed. But I know it is very bothersome for her at the same time. My heart goes out to all who have suffered through this. At 30 years old I have realized once again... that we never know what tomorrow brings us. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the video. My palsy just started a couple of days ago and it was last night that I realized something big was going on. Today was my first fully-symptomatic day. I'm prepared for a long road. The YouTube videos from everybody are really helpful. I already feel like I'm part of a community. Thanks!
You are so brave!i had it for almost 18 years now,and still is so hard for me to talk about it.i'm doing alot better but, it never went away completely.......sometimes i forget that i have it but sometimes is really bad i guess stress has to do alot with it.I....B12 is really good I'm taking the pills but i'm going to start with the shots hoping someday i goes away completely.....
I am 24. I cried and cried at your video. Nov 1, 09 in 2 days will be a year for me. Your vidoe really helped me. The why me is right... And all the tears down your cheeks. I cried !!! lol
Excellent video, so touching. I've had Bell's Palsy and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome for almost three weeks now, and things are already a little bit better. The most obvious thing which needs improvement is my eye.. during 'normal' blinks, the left eye only makes a tiny movement (stays open) while the right one closes. When I make an extreme effort to close the left eye, the eyeball rolls up, but it can actually fully close.
Im at almost a year and have about 95% recovery...It really sucked at first because I thought I had a stroke. And Im a helth freak who lives in the gym. In my opinion stress is the main trigger for BP. It hit me when my father was very ill and dying. I was so stressed out that you immune system weakens and allows the virus to activate in the nerve.... Ive had some additional stress and it acted up a little bit so I took Prednasolone again and chilled out and now im better, Great vid girl..
This is an Amazing video ..ihave bell's palsy now before 4 daye's and ihope to get will soon ..cuz im not stop of craying all the day ..god help me and thank very much sis you make me really feel muce better..^_^
Thank You so much for making this video. I've had bell's palsy for 2 yrs now. I feel good about it now b/c my self esteem is coming back. I feel pretty again. I can raise my brow more now. can close eye, but when i do my cheek moves at the same time. can smile but not a full smile. Nose moves well...and Yay I can whistle...Just taught my daughter to do that. still feels funny though. still cant do mouthwash either. but no drooling..i cried watchin this video. Thanx again i feel better now...
this video is great! Really made me proud. I've had it for about 7 years now. I can close my eyes fine and everything My eye tears when i eat chili or something spicy. I can whistle but not as i used to. I also can't raise my right eyebrow but i can close each eye individually. I feel there is no hope anymore, i thought i was the only one, i know now im not, and im happy that i have more or less of an average face, even with BP. thank you =]
guys please leave a comment for me too , i had it on my right side but is is cured within 2 months. Then i had it on the left side and it is 5 years not completely cured. Should I go fr any therapies ?
Hey guys..I've had bells palsy for 16 years now, i never fully recovered and my smile looks exactly like hers (in video) i get all those little twtiches when i close my eyes or smile...anyway, ive kind of gotten used to it, but i hope that there is still acure out there for me, God willing. Hope eveypone gets better. Take care! xxx
Thank you for your vid. I woke up this morning to find that I had bell's. I will not let it get me down. Arton Senna had it and if he can recover to win the formula 1 world championship then I can.
I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy February 20, 2006. I thought it would be temporary. I cried when this happened, My children have never seen me smile other than pictures before they were born. People are always telling me to smile...and at this point I'm tired of explaining why I don't even try...my facial muscles and corresponding nerves have now "recoded" themselves..and parts of my face does weird things if I try to smile. I hear that this new stem cell research could make a difference...
My sister has had bellspalsy for 6 months. She had it back in Nov. and went away after four months and then march 1 got it on the other side. doctors say it's viral and will be sending her to a specialist to find out what virus it is.
very encouraging video, i had bells palsey about 2 years ago. worst time of my life. my eye still closes when i yawn and smile. but to anyone who has it now, keep positive, i found craniotherepy helped me.
Hi..I was almost 9 months pregnant when I got Bells. It has now been almost 9 years...My Bells has now turned into Synkinesis. I have found someone named Diana Farragher in England that works with patients of all ages. Since I cannot get to England, I am going to work with her via computer. I have come to terms with the fact that I have facial paralysis, but I would love to one day be able to smile normally in a picture with my children.......Best of luck!
wow i love this vid. it has made me stronger. i just got diagnosed with bell's palsy yesterday. at night its hard for me to sleep because of the pain behind my ear this sucks but going thru this so far has made me look at life in a different perspective and appreciate what im blessed with. God Bless You All.
I also had pain behind my ear and went to a guy who does pressure points, got rid of it straight away. I remember that pain, it hurt like hell, try other types of therapies other than your ordinary doctor, anything is worth a go
wow dindingz,,this is the 1st time i have seen someone mention the pain..OMG it did hurt me like real bad,i was on the floor crying my eyes out, even felt like hitting my oen head to make it stop..dunno if urs was That bad,,but nice to see someone had experienced pain too
ive just been diagnosed with BP today - thank you so much for your awesome films - im feeling better already! and just trying to enjoy the fact that I can pull of a proper Jack Nicholson sneer for the first time in my life!
I had bells palsy when I was around 11 and got it again when I was around 20 or 21. I have to say there isn't anything more aggravating than having this. I didn't even want to be seen out in public or be around any of my friends. The second time I got this I thought it wasn't going to go away. I then started doing this thing called shock therapy that brought my face back to normal. I still have a few tears roll down the eye sometimes when I eat though congrats on your recovery!
My friend was soon sent to a clinic where he had various sorts of scans, MRI, urine/blood tests, etc. Finally, the doctor sent him home and prescribed him with Tegretol ONLY.
Tegretol turns out to be an anticonvulsant, which works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain. So if I understand correctly Tegretol is a sort of analgesic meant to treat nerve pain. Continue...
My best friend has gotten Bell's palsy 5 days ago on 25 September 2008.
Im not sure what the precise cause of his palsy was, but I suspect that as he was having a panic attack (under huge stress and tiredness), one of the arteries that runs through the brain near the cerebellum got swollen and touched/rubbed/pressed on the 7th Cranial nerve. Im not sure if the artery also touched or pressed on the Trigeminal nerve but I think not. That was more or less the scenario 5 days ago.
I had Bell's Palsy a couple years ago, it does go away eventually...mine did after 4 months...i guess im one of the fortunate ones...well at least i was..lol...mine is back!!!...although it hasnt set in completely, it is not as hard to deal with this time..im prepared!!...Thank you for your videos Shashanounou...-R- \m/
Thank you so much for posting this, you are so inspirational. I've only had it for a few days now, and even though it's a mild case and will recover in a month or so, it is so terrible. I can't imagine what you've gone through for a year. I'm taking vitamin B12, it's a really power supplement that might help you, i started feeling some differences within a day of taking it. Thanks again, and God bless! I hope you are able to make a full recovery! =/ (my bell's palsy smile) lol
Wow and to think two weeks ago i was crapping myself, never heard of BP before it hit me, i thought i had a stroke. Thanks for the Vid its uplifting to say the least. My face is coming back to normal just dry eye and dribbles at night. I am real lucky i guess. can i ask, after the worse of it did you feel drained and did your body ache, legs and back? this is where i am at the moment.
i admire U...u really impressed me..thanx for sharing. i was looking for this because mu cousin got it, and i had no idea what was about...but one thing i have to say , i learn a lot from this...God bless u..keep it positive
So I think I might have this. It started yesterday. Just youtubed videos to see if recovery is really possible. I go to the doctor today and I'll find out I guess. It's scary to be honest.
I am amazed at your video and your attitude! I am at 9 months now and still opting for more recovery. YOU LOOK GREAT .... and of course KEEP SMILING :)
I have gone through this last year.....I can understand the pain! Goshh!!! why didt I get an idea to serach youtube earlier for this....I was all alone...
I have had bells palsy since I was 12 and now I am 16 so I have had it 3 yearsand something months. At first it was hard since I couldn't do any expresion right. I thought it would go away slowly then the doctor said I would never recover 100%. But life goes on and I sometimes forget I have BP. I thought that I was olone in this but I'm not. THis got me thinking that there could be something worse than this. I like to sing and I not gonna let this stop me so everybody think of the better things
I don't know how to say thank you enough!!! I am going on my 3rd yr anniversary and become so depressed sometimes, but when I watched your video, it made me realize how far I have come (still have a ways to go but my husband doesn't have to tape my eye shut anymore!!)...thank you thank you thank you
Hello!! Thanks for words of wisdom. I had BP more than four years ago. I have had the same results as you. Maybe the only difference in me is a still have a swollen right side and swollen nostril. Sucks!! could be worse I have a friend whose had it five times in 3 years so i am not going to complain!!
Hello!! Thank you so much for this video!! I Find it very motivating!! I've had BP for almost 2 years and is going away slowly!! I still look kindda funny when i smile or laugh'but i still like to smile,no matter what!!! Good luck to you and to people with BP!!!
kind of corny video, But nice too. I'm on day 2 with bells palsy. Still in a laughing stage, especially most of my friends. the thing that bugs me the most is my eye, the rest is pretty much okay...liking the eye brow thing, couldn't raise one like that before, haha. I'm not going to do the sleeping thing though, gonna party my way through it. Bought festial tickets the day before it happened...so well..screw it I'm going.
hi my name is karen and i also have bi lederal bells pasly.. I am going on 10 1/2 months and after 3 mri and cat scans the doctors are still ot sure why it happen.. I had it happen after my son was born... I was watching your video and i just can relate with you soo much that i also started to cry b/c i am soo frustrated that i can/t smile still and my face is still paralyzed.. I am able to go outside w/ out sunglases and close my eyes which is a huge improvement.. anyway thanks for the video...
Last September I contracted bilateral bell's palsy (both sides of face) and have a hell of a time trying to recover both physically and mentally. I'm still only about 70% fixed, but your video has given me hope.
I absolutely love this video. I like the part where you say to look around You Tube for other people who have Bell's Palsy, because after I uploaded mine that was when I noticed the related videos and started watching different users and their progress to give myself hope of my own recovery. You're awesome, I love the humor you put into your BP vids :)
Thats great!! I have BP....6 wks now! I think I'm almost fully recovered...But I am super happy you are making progress! Yea when I got my smile back I was literally smiling all day! But hang in there! You are doing great! ;-)
Hey, thanks for the update - glad to see your progress. My BP came on Sept 29th. I am much better now - I can smile an almost symmetric smile now, I don't have to push to the food out of my cheek from the outside with my hand, and I am much more self confident about my speech. I can not yet whistle. Thanks - Rolf
I am over the top happy for your progress in one year. My mom had Bell's Palsy for 7 years and she never recovered use with her eye or much with her mouth. But she did get use to it over time.

@bfrancisco2 Nope I didn't. I did think about it and for acupuncture as well. But, I did neither.

Maybe not 100 percent but it will get better.
alstvc 1 year ago

I didn't even want to be seen out in public or be around any of my friends. The second time I got this I thought it wasn't going to go away. Continuing with my post...
