Anyone who fails to see how brilliant Partch is doesn't deserve the ears that they clearly don't know how to use. He is a genius. After watching this video, search 'Battles - Mirrored', they were a band whom I considered to be fairly influential until I realised the similarities.
I HATE MUSIC NERDS....hes just showing how his instruments work. Also this film was made over fifty years ago before you and all of your punk asses ever tried being "experimental artists".....dont be fucking haters
@TouchingYou ah dude but this is the original cliche ;)
by all means develop your own opinions but also try to understand that we build who we are upon the foundations of those that came before us, partch was very influential, not just in his odd experiments but also his lifestyle
@TouchingYou "Doing shit that every avant garde fan does?" Harry Partch WAS the avant-garde. He was doing things in the 1920s. This video just barely scratches the surface.
the original aphex twin making his own instruments when there were not the ones available to make the sounds he heard...a geius sound, a thickly atmospheric 20 minutes.
First, I know you don't learn anything about music in school. But I think my professors mentioned Harry Partch just in passing in music history. This is the only original composer--plus he's American and he's not even covered.
i dont even think my band teacher knows about this guy mainly because he doesnt use "standard" tuning like all the other composers and his music is much more difficult than, say, jazz swing at a 200 tempo or some such.
its a shame, i'd like to at least attempt to play some of his music.
the technology used was not advanced but the thinking was advanced....at this time, this was never herd before...the expansion of harmonic combinations continues to grow.
Absolute genius

This is the version that I restored. I left a signature in it that is very different from the original.
Please support the non-profit Innova Recordings of the American Composers Forum by purchasing a copy so we can keep up the work.

His way of talking is a kind of very relaxing music in itself.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Yeah, I find his music and new instruments to be UNDERWHELMING.
He's doing shit that every avant garde fan does in his FIRST year on regular instruments (like drumming on a guitar while slapping it / muting it).
This stuff IS "ancient" as he mentions. He's just modified it VERY little.
Anyone who's ever played a piano on the inside or zither that's out of tune accomplished the same thing essentially .
And his percussion stuff is weak I think too.

then why bother watching it?

OMG I find your alphabet to be weak and derivative, just like your pretentious, oh-look-at-me opinions. Troll.

My theory teacher mentioned Partch and played a brief example. That was 10 years ago. My life has been forever changed!

@radiofriendly He's not "the only original composer." Foolish absolute. He is awesome though :3

The most advanced musical mind ever?
I think so.

Not the most advanced. He's just playing with sounds. It's very cool, no doubt. Very original. Most advanced? Naw.
