The South was already voting Republicans into national office before Bill Clinton. Seniority plays a huge role, especially in the senate, where committee leadership positions are based on seniority.

One example of a Republican (years ago he was a Democrat) with a racially insensitive past would be Strom Thurmond (Senator from SC), but he had been serving so long no one really threw the issue at his face anymore. He served in the senate a little over his 100th birthday.

Living in West Virginia myself, I am pretty disappointed in a select minority group of people in this state, mostly those living in the center, the Appalachian parts, of the state, where there hasn't been much development due to the geography and the hills. It's a lot more expensive to turn WV into a developed state than most other places. Poverty is a big problem, a lot of people there are on welfare.
This area and these people haven't really changed in the past 100 years. There used to be a booming lumber and coal mining industry but ever since the 1920s, with major corporations coming into existence and sucking our resources dry, everything has been going downhill. Education is incredibly poor, quality of life is incredibly poor, everything is incredibly poor.
Refugees from Hurricane Katrina literally refused to come to West Virginia when the opportunity arose. I don't know what Robert Byrd subconsciously thinks about black people but I know that he has devoted his life to bettering West Virginia, to modernizing and diversifying West Virginia. He's has incredible successes in the more populated areas of the state, with education being his highest priority. But there are still countless problems in Appalachia.
I don't mean to sympathize with a backwards people, many of them racists, but I really hate these kinds of videos that denounce West Virginia and Byrd. WV has a lot of problems and Robert Byrd is the only national figure we can rely on to help. When he passes away in office, I don't know what will happen.

The South was already voting Republicans into national office before Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton had almost nothing to do with it, as much as some will try to deny it, the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by President Johnson (Texas) disenfranchised many Southern Whites. The Republicans knew that they found gold, and went for it, and eventually got it.
Look up the "Southern Strategy" - Your perception about the whole issue will change.

Robert Byrd, as inexcusable as being a KKK member is, his seniority has always played a role.
One example of a Republican (years ago he was a Democrat) with a racially insensitive past would be Strom Thurmond (Senator from SC), but he had been serving so long no one really threw the issue at his face anymore. He served in the senate a little over his 100th birthday.

Blacks gained politically, socially, and economically from the federal level not at the state and local level. When Republicans reject "big government" and pushes more for small and state government it does not favor blacks. That is why Republicans have a hard time attracting black voters.

Almost every black person I've spoken to in southern WV knows that Senator Byrd was a klan member. They vote for him because he does what he says he will. My grandfather was a miner in southern WV and he got black lung. He wrote to the senator and he recieved his insurance or whatever it is they give to people who do have black lung. My grandfather was African American. People on the outside see uneducated voters voting for a racist man, people there know what they're doing

Living in West Virginia myself, I am pretty disappointed in a select minority group of people in this state, mostly those living in the center, the Appalachian parts, of the state, where there hasn't been much development due to the geography and the hills. It's a lot more expensive to turn WV into a developed state than most other places. Poverty is a big problem, a lot of people there are on welfare.

There used to be a booming lumber and coal mining industry but ever since the 1920s, with major corporations coming into existence and sucking our resources dry, everything has been going downhill. Education is incredibly poor, quality of life is incredibly poor, everything is incredibly poor.

Refugees from Hurricane Katrina literally refused to come to West Virginia when the opportunity arose. I don't know what Robert Byrd subconsciously thinks about black people but I know that he has devoted his life to bettering West Virginia, to modernizing and diversifying West Virginia. He's has incredible successes in the more populated areas of the state, with education being his highest priority. But there are still countless problems in Appalachia.
