We taught my daughter to say Jiji and Baba too, but all my Japanese friends laugh when they hear my father in law get called Jiji. They say it just means Mister and is kind of disrespectful. Hearing other kids use it makes me feel better.

@anamalikat We are watching the news carefully, and will do all we can to prepare for radiation. We have food and water, so we could stay inside for a few days if we have to. Nina has seen some of the images on TV, but we don't let her watch too much. We have explained to her a little bit, but basically, she is just living her life as normal.

@ggrahamm17 We are in Nagoya, several hundred kilometers from the worst hit areas, so we are all fine. We've had a few small earthquakes over the last few days, but Nina has hardly noticed them. We just feel so sorry for all the families whose lives have been destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami, and now have the threat of radiation leakage to worry about. I don't know how they will recover.

@islamissheaven No, Nina can't really read yet. She is just telling the story from memory. I have been trying to teach her the sounds of the letters a bit, but she can only read a few simple words, like dog, cat, bug etc. How old is your brother? Just start with easy words with just one vowel, and then go from there.

@memeQ123 Ahh, that's sad. My wife and I both worked full-time from when Nina was 8 months until she was two, and we were always tired and busy... Now, my wife doesn't work, and I try to spend as much time at home as I can. We make less money, but our life feels easier. I don't know... the balance between work and family is tricky. I'm sure your parents are working hard to help provide for you, but not having a birthday party is sad, too.

But you and your wife are living my dream of marrying, having a child and teaching her the best of both worlds.
