Cows are creatures of habit, they enjoy doing the same thing everyday. They come to the barn to get milked on their own. If you are not there on time to milk them, they will all be waiting. Fashion forward you obviously have no clue about the nature of cattle.

@maximum411 From experience in crossing the Canadian landscape, in the summer months you'd be hard-pressed to drive 30km without seeing (smelling?) a field full of cows grazing. I don't know why this farm does not have the cows in the full outdoors. But, the dairy farm I visited as a boy had a semi-style set-up. I summer they were out much of the time, in winter they were inside and they looked pretty damn comfy.
I can't speak for Canada, but in the US many dairies keep their cattle inside and chained up full time, with zero time outside or on pasture. I would think it would be the same for Canada, but you may have been seeing smaller family dairies or organic dairies- the big commercial ones where most of our milk comes from don't let them outside.

@Igothisone although it is unfortunate that they are unable to graze, many cows are unable to do so, especially in the wintertime, so long as they are given good roughage such as hay, and a dry place to sleep and walk they do fine. As for taking care of the calves, Dairy cows produce so much milk that if a calf were allowed to nurse regularly it would get scours and die.

Low production, chronic mastits, and deformed udders are a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. What I am trying to say is that some farmers are interested in having more comfortable cows and being progressive in the industry. (Like the guy in the video) Trust me, healthy cows are alot easier to deal with than sick cows.
The good news for animal rights activists is that a healthier, more comfortable cow is often more profitable. So even farmers that are into dairy farming only for the money have a reason to keep their cows healthier.
Believe it or not some people farm because they like their animals not because of the money. Its not a monday - friday job for most farmers.
Often it isn't because it is to sick or lame to continue producing but rather a host of other factors... Dairy farmers hope that they get to choose which animals to cull and which to keep in the herd. This way they get to keep the ones with desirable traits and lose the ones with bad traits. Reasons: Low production, chronic mastits, bad udder shape/slow milker and wether there is room for new heifers. Dairy farmers are trying to work to not lose any animals due to illness and feet/legs.

(Not saying there aren't any just not any that I have visited). Artificial insemination actually slow down how often a cow has a baby verses if there was a bull breading them. People who do not care about cow comfort are not allowed to ship milk in canada b/c they get suspended. Its all very regulated. Cow comfort is also a big factor in butterfat content of the milk. Because the first thing that a cow will cut from her milk when she is stressed is fat. And in canada we get payed for our fat content. So cow comfort is very key to profit.

One of my farmer friends has only 100 cows. He gets up in the morning at 4 A.M. and is finished milking at 8 A.M (five hours). He uses only two machines and so milks 2 cows at a time. He again milks at 3 P.M. if he were to milk by hand he'd need 10 hours. He'd never finish milking only 100 cows.

I saw a video where the milk is leaking out of the treats of the cows and making puddles n cats r having a ball catching the milk stream. Their owner says that it is natural. The milk has formed puddles all over. Obviously the cows are begging to be milked.

U have to worry that u get as much milk from them as possible cause u have to feed them and their calves and your family and pay back the debt u acquired when u bought the cows. U will go bankrupt if u don't make money left after u incur all these expenses.. U have to worry if u can buy clothes.

But that does not mean the the inside tissue is still not saturated with milk. U still have to think of the ways to get this tissue to release milk. I know hundred ways to get this done if you would want to hear. I'd work with you if you have at least 150 cows because it is not worth my time. That is what I know about cows.
@mahafakir If you have cows with hard udders after milking, its not b/c the tissue is saturated with milk, its b/c of poor udder texture, try breeding those cows to a bull like Talent, who is great for udder texture, I know our Outside cows have had some udder texture problems in the past, but he's gone now.

Brahmans do not drink the milk of cows whose udders have been touched by Muslims. So these owners let the Brhamans milk their cows and buffaloes themselves. Some of these owners hired me to milk their animals so that they would not be milked by whole lots of pairs of hands. Besides in India the owners would add water to the milk to make more money. It is much harder to milk the Buffaloes. It requires a lot of strength to milk the buffaloes. Their teats swell up much more than the teats of cows when the buffaloes teats r ready to be squeezed and you have to maintain the milking rhythm or u'll get kicked. @maximum411 From experience in crossing the Canadian landscape, in the summer months you'd be hard-pressed to drive 30km without seeing (smelling?) a field full of cows grazing. I don't know why this farm does not have the cows in the full outdoors. But, the dairy farm I visited as a boy had a semi-style set-up. I summer they were out much of the time, in winter they were inside and they looked pretty damn comfy.

I can't speak for Canada, but in the US many dairies keep their cattle inside and chained up full time, with zero time outside or on pasture. I would think it would be the same for Canada, but you may have been seeing smaller family dairies or organic dairies- the big commercial ones where most of our milk comes from don't let them outside.

Factory farming is what is a sin, and I don't know how the people in high places like the USDA allow this type of brutality to continue. @Igothisone although it is unfortunate that they are unable to graze, many cows are unable to do so, especially in the wintertime, so long as they are given good roughage such as hay, and a dry place to sleep and walk they do fine. As for taking care of the calves, Dairy cows produce so much milk that if a calf were allowed to nurse regularly it would get scours and die.

Low production, chronic mastits, and deformed udders are a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. What I am trying to say is that some farmers are interested in having more comfortable cows and being progressive in the industry. (Like the guy in the video) Trust me, healthy cows are alot easier to deal with than sick cows.

The good news for animal rights activists is that a healthier, more comfortable cow is often more profitable. So even farmers that are into dairy farming only for the money have a reason to keep their cows healthier.
Believe it or not some people farm because they like their animals not because of the money. Its not a monday - friday job for most farmers.

Often it isn't because it is to sick or lame to continue producing but rather a host of other factors... Dairy farmers hope that they get to choose which animals to cull and which to keep in the herd. This way they get to keep the ones with desirable traits and lose the ones with bad traits. Reasons: Low production, chronic mastits, bad udder shape/slow milker and wether there is room for new heifers. Dairy farmers are trying to work to not lose any animals due to illness and feet/legs.

In the states they are given BST but in Canada this is illegal! This is unnatural and does force the cow to milk for longer. Some processors in the USA are moving away from it and eventually down the road it won't be used anymore. I don't agree with the veal thing either and think its disgusting.

Can you please explain to me how they are forced? They have good genetics, access to high quality feed, and water. Yes they are also milked twice or three days a day. Farms with robots where its free choice the cows get milked between 2-3 times a day.
You can say that the farmers breeding the cows after 45-60 days (60 days is typical) is what forces them but any animal with the nutritional requirements will reproduce as often as possible. Two basic instincts:Survive,Reproduce

@DogWalkingTall The Heifers are raised for replacements of the dairy cow. I don't know a single dairy farm that keeps the bull calfs around for veal. (Not saying there aren't any just not any that I have visited). Artificial insemination actually slow down how often a cow has a baby verses if there was a bull breading them. Bulls give a higher conception rate.

There is nothing unnatural about the process except for the fact that it isn't fresh semen coming from a bull right there. Cows treated with antibiotics milk is not allowed in the tank until there is no trace of the antibiotics. Growth hormones are not used on dairy farms in Canada. Calves denied sunlight? Dairy farmers aren't in the market for veal.... different industry.

Why is the maker of this video worried about Dairy cow comfort and not about the amount of milk his cows are producing for him. Obviously he is not a farmer. He's using the cows he does not own to make the video and does not worry if he makes any profit if the tissues of the udder of the cows remain saturated with milk after the cows are finished with milking. In all the cases there is 75% milk still remaining in the udder and u have to think of the ways to get the cows to release that milk.

People who do not care about cow comfort are not allowed to ship milk in canada b/c they get suspended. Its all very regulated. Cow comfort is also a big factor in butterfat content of the milk. Because the first thing that a cow will cut from her milk when she is stressed is fat. And in canada we get payed for our fat content. So cow comfort is very key to profit.

Our last cow that died was 13 years old, not pregnant (b/c of old age i think) and not milking much, then one day... just dead. U r a person of few words. What will be true? that cows are milked by humans instead of by the calves? Not 100% true. In lots of places the milk is shared by their owners with the cows. In Australia the farmers go to the extent of giving electric shocks to the udders of the cows to make them let their calves suckle their teats because many cows would only be milked by humans since they are raised that way. So nothing is 100% true. It all depends upon the owner s of the cows.

I doubt it. I doubt the set up will determine how happy r miserable the cows r. The cows generate a lot of heat. Such a closed unit'd accumulate a lot of heat n make the cows miserable unless it's air conditioned. I doubt that this place's air conditioned. That's why it's totally necessary for a person to get a good college education before becoming a farmer. Otherwise wise guys will start selling you Eifel Tower or Verrazano Suspension Bridge. Next time some body would sell a floating barn.

@awd2702hero Where did I say that this barn should be air conditioned? This man was talking about the comfort of the cows rather than the amount of milk they produce for him. The reason people have cows is to produce profits. Theu purposely leave 75% milk oin the udder so that the Government will keep the prices at artificially high levels. Poor people can't afford to buy milk. Mu words fall on deaf ears. I right so Government will reduce the price curbs.

Farmers do not leave 75% of the milk in the cows, i don't know where you heard that, its totally and completely false. prices stay high b/c of the quota system (supply managment)

The milking machines are not uncomfy. If they were they would let you know trust me. They are AI bred to keep agressive bulls outta the barn. You pregnate them to get offspring. Baby girls are 500 dollar items. Bull goto raisers whom supply the beef industy with steers for McDonalds. Dairymen have to give cattle superb care b/c their livelyhood depends on her. People whom dont care for them well should be whipped and banned from owning ANY animal.

@troyrl That's what u think. Four suction cup drawing a 12oz cup of milk from each teat ever nano second can't be that much comfortable. But there is no other choice if you have even hundred cows. One of my farmer friends has only 100 cows. He gets up in the morning at 4 A.M. and is finished milking at 8 A.M (five hours). He uses only two machines and so milks 2 cows at a time. He again milks at 3 P.M. if he were to milk by hand he'd need 10 hours. He'd never finish milking only 100 cows.

are they let outside? do they hook them up to those uncomfortable milking machines? Are the artificially inseminated over and over so the KEEP producing milk? You think getting an arm up your ass so they can position your uterus is comfortable? Giving birth and getting your babies taken away? Do those babies go to veal farms?
Good for these guys for taking steps in the right direction, but some things in the dairy industry will never change and cannot be avoided.

I want the dairy farmers to donate money to me. I'll have a dairy farm operated by vegans. They will start drinking milk and the farmers will be able to sell more milk and the price of milk will go up. Thdey will recover their donations in no time.

Ladysith13 how would the cows be milked? You can hand milk 5 r 6 cows. But not 200 r 300 cows. When I've my dairy farm I'll hire you to apply these machines to their teats. U will like it. U will say what a fool I've been thinking that cows should not be milked.

@ladysith13 U have no idea what many women like. There is a weekly tabloid called village voice. It used to have two columns each by a woman. They used to talk about the subject of fisting without lubrication. They said lubrication takes the joy out of fisting. Fisting of Ass, fisting of Vagina. Cows get very tense due to sex desire. @no1horselover Is what u always think about is if the cows get let out of pasture? Where do you want them to go? Roam about on Streets? Go on a trip to Yugoslavia? Some times the farmers do take their cows to the cities so that city folks can try milking them. What is a 1 horselover? It seems to me that you are a one cow lover. Too bad you have a horse instead of a Mare. If u had a mare u could drink her milk. Mare milk is very delicious.

@no1horselover Y the hell the answer to this question interests u. U are the idiot since the answer would depend upon the owner of the cows. Some body has only a few cows and his cows remain in the fields all the time. He takes his bucket to the field and milks them. Others have hundreds of cows and it would take too much time to round them up at milking time. So they stay in the barn all the time. It would bother you. Would not it? But it happens all the time especially in large diaries.

@mahafakir U r a 1 horse lover? r not u. U feel guilty having more than one horse. U do not ride your horse. U walk along side it without a bit in its mouth and whistle and you go alongside it. U learnt whistling from Lauren Bacall from that movie and u think all day if people have cows locked up in barns all day and they are not able to do on dates with bulls. :Let me tell you most farmers do not have bulls for the cows. The've people come and inseminate them with a straw full of semen.

@mahafakir thats a load of shit!! I live in the country and there are hundreds of dairy farmers that have between 100 and 800 cows each and every one of them keep their cows in paddocks/pastures They round them up twice a day for milking. Keeping them shut in like this is cruel.

@no1horselover Only one horse lover who worry about if the cows get let out of the pastures are idiots. The cows are there to be milked. Some cow owners doi not have pastures. There is no law that states cow owners should have pastures. By the way why would a cow stay in a pasture? They go to pastures if the cow owners have one. Then they go to the milking parlors to be milked. If the cow owners do not have pastures they stay in the barns.

@stuntaholic Why did this comment get a 4 rating? Beats me. What has a male and female offspring to do with this video. It depends upon the farmer. Some of them will have them slaughtered and sell the meat as veal. Others will raise them and sell them. Sex has nothing to do with any thing.

I see lot of problems with this video. How would you know the cows r happier than any other cows. They r cows that get milked by humans rather than by calves. They get fed the same shit. Did you not see the shit he was pouring over hay? I'm sure you work for this company that's selling this set up.

The stuff he was pouring over the total mixed ration was just more of that same stuff. When you have a tmr mixer you just mix everything in the wagon and pour it out in the lane. He was just feeding them again. And no, I do not sell any setup this is just what is most common in my area and the cows have very few health problems.

Why is he adding this powder stuff to the hay? Is this what is sweet feed? Sweet feed has as little as 10% grains. Rest is garbage. Why does he not add feed grain to the cows. Why does not he feed hay to the cows before or after milking them? The cow comfort is not what is going to please Peta people. Not milking the cows will.

@happycows4 By the way You must be a vegan who believes the cows should never be milked and you would ask people to go take a leak instead of milking the cows. The idea is not to make cows happy but how to make them give more milk. I'm on a more milk from the cows crusade and I'll keep at it until every farmer joins my crusade. I'm sure the farmers are afraid of milking their cows for fear of vegans like this veganbutterfly.

@mahafakir I am a dairy farmer and i love my cows I milk them every 8 hours or 3 times a day . the reason i said dont take a leak for 15 hours is to try to help the simple ununderstanding people that think not milking cows will make them live a more pleasant life realize the cow actually wants and needsto be milked and is not misused in the process ! I am a LONG shot from being a vegan by the way well I need to go milk my cows.

@happycows4 I'm glad somebody is paying attention to my comments and is not afraid of milking his cows. The cows and goats and sheep and even mares are meant to be milked. I saw a video where the milk is leaking out of the treats of the cows and making puddles n cats r having a ball catching the milk stream. Their owner says that it is natural. The milk has formed puddles all over. Obviously the cows are begging to be milked.

@happycows4 U asked me this question twice. . U say u r a farmer. I doubt that u r a farmer. U r so worried about the happiness of the cows. If u own the cows u do not have to worry if they r happy. U have to worry that u get as much milk from them as possible cause u have to feed them and their calves and your family and pay back the debt u acquired when u bought the cows. U will go bankrupt if u don't make money left after u incur all these expenses.. U have to worry if u can buy clothes.

@happycows4 So now u know what I know about the cows. I know that the farmers think that the cow has been milked when the milk is not being sucked by suction cups. But that does not mean the the inside tissue is still not saturated with milk. U still have to think of the ways to get this tissue to release milk. I know hundred ways to get this done if you would want to hear. I'd work with you if you have at least 150 cows because it is not worth my time. That is what I know about cows.

@mahafakir If you have cows with hard udders after milking, its not b/c the tissue is saturated with milk, its b/c of poor udder texture, try breeding those cows to a bull like Talent, who is great for udder texture, I know our Outside cows have had some udder texture problems in the past, but he's gone now.

@happycows4 The reason I know about the cows is that I'm a Hindu Brahman. Some of the cows and buffaloes in India are owned by Muslims. Brahmans do not drink the milk of cows whose udders have been touched by Muslims. So these owners let the Brhamans milk their cows and buffaloes themselves. Some of these owners hired me to milk their animals so that they would not be milked by whole lots of pairs of hands. Besides in India the owners would add water to the milk to make more money. @mahafakir part 2 reply to Happycows4 . So if you wanted undiluted milk in old days u would be wise to demand the the cows be milked in your presence. The things have changed. The cows re\ not allowed to be in cities. They re in the country. The owners milk the cows n deliver it to the stores in the cities to sell the milk. It's the duty of the stores to make sure there is no water in the milk or people won't buy from them. The Brahmans r not that strict any more n would buy milk from muslims

@mahafakir reply to happycows4 part 2 I milked my first buffalo at the age of 5. It is harder to milk a buffalo than a cow. It does not need that much strength to milk cows and goats. It is much harder to milk the Buffaloes. It requires a lot of strength to milk the buffaloes. Their teats swell up much more than the teats of cows when the buffaloes teats r ready to be squeezed and you have to maintain the milking rhythm or u'll get kicked. U have to anticipate when the coming of a kick.
