Although the new series is not bad -- the original is so much better.  Yes, it is dated and cheesy -- but it was very imaginative, interesting, had morals, a linear storyline, a scary villian, great, catchy music, and lots of action.

The new series is darker, but it seems much more toned down and made for the true fans of the original series, like me. They have basically just copied much of the original's glory and interpreted it into new material.

Great intro, i grew up with this since since i was 4 26 years ago and even taped nearly all the episodes when it came out on weekdays and in Saturday Mornings. Cheetara was pure bonervision for me and i had a thing for her including some fantasies of her as a teen even when i rewatched this show on Toonami when i was 17 after high school.

An alien cat-like race on another planet is not the same thing as Thundercats. The Thundercats were technologically advanced, and stranded on the planet. Fighting against mutants from another world. Avatar was about humans trying to take a resource from another planet, and fighting against all the natives on the planet, including primitive, cat-like aliens.

Many of the shows were originally developed in Japan and then dubbed, If there was a show produced here, it is far cheaper to have it drawn there. For example Family Guy is storyboarded here but draw in Korea

I have to agree with you as far as my opinion on Japanese storytelling = AWESOME!

But American distributors have a long track record of meddling with the art they're distributing.

On the other hand, our classic cartoons were more than the generalization of a piano on a duck -there was irony and comic timing and spacing... and you know who you can thank for that? The same people that inspired greats like Osamu Tezuka... the legendary animator Grim Natwick calls them, "Americans."

I love animation of all kinds, but for me its the story and how the animation measures up to portraying that story. They showed this intro, it led into regular intro and then in the first moments of the episode Jaga dies. =/ Kinda bittersweet. The whole 80's vibe consisted of someone always dying in cartoons. Jaga died, Optimus Prime died... no wonder the kids grew up gothic. Haha!

i dont think the cartoonists were going for symbolism...the eye of thundera-cats have unique eyes that are pretty well-related to cats. reptilians, well theyre just ugly like a traditional villian and reptiles, rats, etc are usually viewed as villianous. It wouldnt make sense to make them bunny rabbits or something of the sort.

and ya Ra was the name of an egyptian god but I think they were going more for a subtle allusion to egyptian culture because he is after all a mummy (very much related to Egyptians), but not specifically a reference to egyptian religion.
