The original spec for the G4 was that it had only 4 pipeline stages, although, with Quicksilver, they changed it to 7 as it was too difficult to boost the MHz without overly affecting the yield of the G4 chips. Thats why the original 500 MHz G4 was delayed , due to a very low yield of working chips for every production run.
@Dontpickmelast101 The specs aren't that horrible , the dual 800s develop enough power to trump the 1.6GHz G5 tower and the pinnacle of the Power Mac G4s, the MDD dual 1.42GHz can trump even the 2006 Core Solo Mac Mini, although the Core Duo smokes it totally.
@Coilaman G5's are super nice... However, they don't 'eat' G4's when you take everything into account. I had a DP 2.5GhZ G5 with 4GB RAM and the same GPU as you. I've also owned a 933MhZ QS and 2 DP MDD's. Considering the G5 is VERY power hungry, fairly unreliable in certain respects, and still very pricey for a PowerPC machine, the G4 is a better choice overall. You don't even get an advantage with support by using a G5 machine because developers are ditching both G4 and G5 at the same time...
You said: "...fairly unreliable in certain respects..." What? I got myself a Powermac G5 tower because I knew I was going to get a super reliable machine compared to the shitty Mac Mini that was 40% more expensive and 100 times less reliable than my used Powermac G5.
Try running Adobe CS4 Flash Professional on Mac Mini and see how it goes. It will crash 10 times in 1 day.
You never tried Powermac G5 with professional applications, but you like to talk shit. Idiot.
@Coilaman I'm on about RELIABILITY not performance. The G5 works well with pro apps because that's what it was designed for... Mac Mini is a consumer machine so what's the point in even mentioning that it fails to meet standards of a pro machine when running pro apps? And for the record, I used my G5 for FCS.
There are 2 models of G5 with unreliable LCS's. Both machines were the highest end of the time. The DP 2.5GhZ and the DP 2.7GhZ. Mac Mini AND PowerMac G4 has far less failure rate.
I'd take a G4 over a G5 nowadays anyday. Less power used, smaller, more compact, more reliable sexier IMO, and the main reason, a dual 1Ghz can keep up w/ a single or even dual 1.8Ghz.
i ran a pc dos benchmark(speed200 v2) with some some modded compiler between 933mhz g4 and n270 atom and it shown atom stomp the shit out of g4 at 3x ratio...lol not to mention atom was absolutely handicap(no super scaling& Out of order execution/ dual precession sse and FP was limited to 32bit compare to c2d's 128bit... ) and beat the shit out of g4 in both IPC and raw single threading XD. i wouldn't imagine the god stomp of i7 would do to poor old g4 XD
I still use my powermac g4 quicksilver 2002 dual 1ghz with mac os x 10.5. I edit movies with final cut express and build websites in it. I've also upgraded the graphics card and added a usb 2.0 pci card. Now my external drives are supper fast.
Man I absolutely love my Powermac g4 Quicksilver 933mhz, maxed out the ram to 1.5gb and slapped a few hard drive in and I now have an amazing computer :)
the duo processor still rock, if you upgrade the graphic to install Leopard. Can't believe a 10 years old machine can still run well. For a PC, 10 years? Already in trash can.
@shomosnicholas5 You are an idiot. The powerpc g4 is blow away every pentium 3 or 4.What's count is not the Mhz or Ghz.What's really important is the pipeline stages.the g4 has 7 pipline stages. The pentium 4 at 1.5 Ghz has 20.The pentium 3 well... I don't want to think about that.If you have smaller number of stages the processor is gonna be faster.Well, you see the difference between the two numbers.
We have something called the "Challenger Learning Center" based at one of our colleges in the area. It is a space shuttle/ mission control simulator. The simulation is amazing, and is ran entirely off of G4s!
I love the G3-5 era Macs compared to the Intel just due to style and quality minding you this is coming from a pc gamer. Got a iBook G3 but need to buy an SSD and ram for it though.
Help, my G4 had a power cut while in standby and won't start since. What's the likely culprit? I've tried the reset button and holding the power on button. Light comes on but no fan.
maybe ps2ish games like starwars battlefront, the sims, medal of honor allied assult, ghost recon, doom 3, and more you could look up :D and i rated your comment up becuase it was 1- i dont know why :p
The quicksilver and the MDD are still the best computers in the world.
With software from then they still smoke all else. They can boot in OS9 or X.
Photoshop and Illustrator in OS9? Super fast!.
Features? most are just shortcuts to stuff you could do already and just bloat the software. Old versions are much cleaner and faster. PDF, JPG, or EPS still work the same. Used MAC stores can max out the RAM, add new drives, etc. You end up with a super-machine for little money.
Mine is a Dual 1.5 GHz. It's REALLY Fast and beats my Intel Core 2 Duo PC in booting up. Apple's done a great job. It was probably the fastest computer EVER in 2001!
What a great machine! We use a 2003 Quicksilver with dual 1 GHz G4s and 1.5 Gigs of RAM as a file/web/open directory server. It runs Leopard Server amazingly fast! What kind of pc-computer made in 2003 would run Win Server 2008 in a comparable efficient and reliable fashion?
The G4 was a really great chip, much mor efficient then the x86 based processors of it's time. What a pity IBM and Motorola screwed up delivering power efficient G5s as successors in a reasonable timeframe...
@jamespsullivan84 The G4 chip was great, but eventually I caught up with the G5, which is even faster. Although a successful chip, 2 problems with it. One, it consumes too much power. and 2, they never got it into laptops! My G5 Mid 2004 replaced my AGP Sawtooth G4 because I am more serious about web services nowadays. I can use this thing to run 1080HD youtube and it works fine!
Yeah, I searched all the keynotes. No mention of introduction to the mirror drive door systems ANYWHERE. Sawtooth, quicksilver, but no mirror drive door.

My 1.8GHz Powermac G5 is a beast and eats any Powermac G4 for lunch. I got 3GB of RAM in it and an Nvidia 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card.
That card helped my machine achieve a 50% performance increase, which is equal to dual processor 1.8GHz Powermac G5. Just amazing.
