  • Yeah the English dub is pretty shit tbh especially L. I never watch dub though.

  • wtf, woah, from what episodes are these? whats the name of the beginning song?

  • Nah..i cant laugh withim, but ill laugh at the weaboos who bash on all dubs, even the ones that r good. ok? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • 0:44 Everyone: "... Wt.... F?!? "

  • @TheCryptidman ..Exactly. >:}

  • Luigi voice: Well I didn't find that so funny.

  • I thought that the dub was actually pretty good.

  • XD failed maniacal laugh

  • meh......liked subbed better....

  • "I want to tell you...I'm L"

  • 0:18 - 0:23 i do that on a regular basis......laugh at something thats clearly not funny....

  • at the beginning it soulds like saygayemo imlike NEVER >:O

  • i luved the dub! but this vid was hilarious

  • ROFL the combination with the potato chip and his funny laugh is genial :D

  • ahhh.....the laugh of a mad man

I want him as my ringtone

  • HE WILL TAKE A POTATO CHIP.

    AND EAT IT.

  • Hey Light, I'm real happy for ya and I'mma let you finish, but Death Note had one of the best dubs of all time! OF ALL TIME : D

  • @serentochan Nah, Death Note's English dub sucks. Light sounds not as psychotic, as the Jap VA. And wtf is up with L sounding like he doesn't have insomnia? And the voice actors sound the fucking same.

  • dumb dub

  • Its funny coz its still better than the subs

  • I'LL TAKE A POTATO CHIP...... AND EAT IT. >:D

  • Some of these scenes are in Japanese (0:34 - 0:36 | 0:41 - 0:52). There are bit more Japanese scenes, but I'm too lazy to type them in.

Wow, I totally disagree with you guys. I think the dubbed was pretty bad. Probably because I've always watched it in Japanese. But of course, if you only watch American dubbed anime, this was good. But you really can't compare the dub with the Japanese version.

    It's in another league.

  • @GildartsClive. Let me reverse your chain of logic.

I totally agree with you, because I think the subbed was okay, but the dubbing was superior. Probably because I've always watched it in English. But of course, if you started off watching the worst dubs and spent all your time watching subbed anime, this was pretty bad. You really can't compare dubs and subs because people who are close-minded dubhaters were desensitized weeaboos to begin with.

Its ridiculous because no one speaks Japanese...

  • ...and most people I hear claims that the subbing "draws more emotion" and has more effect to it, when really you're reading words at the bottom of the screen just to have a clue what the hell's going on.

I normally take the passive-aggressive approach, but I feel like this video was a deliberate punch in the face anyway so this was acceptable. That's my take on it. If you're not a native or fluent Japanese speaker, it disturbs me how teens/young adults can despise their own language so much.

  • keep pressing 7...............

  • keep presing 4...

  • english dub owns

  • There is no way that dub can ever beat sub. The Anime was meant to be in Japanese. Most of the time with dub, the words seem forced, the point could be confused, and the joke could be completely different. With sub you get the true meaning behind the words the way they were meant to be. Thus the level of epicness is raised to a new standard. I'll admit that the Death Note dub was better than most, but it pails in comparison to sub. No offence is meant to anyone of conflicting opinion.

  • @Eplicas

I find that anime that is set in Western locations, or at least use very western themes usually have great English dubs. For example, I find Ultimate Hellsing better in the English Dub because it's taking place in Europe, and more of the voices seem to fit than in the Japanese (Especially sextastic Crispin Freeman). Barring the obvious Cowboy Bebop, I also found the Soul Eater dub to be very good, especially the two leads in Bailey and Solusod.

  • @Eplicas. Actually it can. Whoever said it was meant to be in JapanesE? You? Did you create the anime in the first place? The words never seem forced (at least to me), I think you're exaggerating. The point isn't confusing unless you're unaware of cultural differences, and the joke is changed to be relevant (if you can even reference an anime that did this). "True meaning" is garbage - subbing means you're relying on someone else to get a translation. Epicness isn't raised at all.

  • On top of that, trying to say the dub "pales" when A) potentially, you clamor for subs and probably watched it in sub first or B) the video itself took the arguably "worst lines in English" to make a very flimsy point; That doesn't really help at all. If A is wrong, then B takes control. The English dubbing is just fine, only a person's interpretation of it can be better or worse. Even Cowboy Bebop's director admitted to preferring the dubbing of his series over the original JP.

  • @ZettaiGARGattai Who said that Anime was meant to be in Japanese? I don't know, let me check. Oh yeah. The freaking Japanese did. In this Anime specifically, the words appear to be forced when L first tells light that he is L. Jokes have been changed in Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece just to name a few that I am aware of. (I don't watch dub unless I have to). But I do have to agree with you on the fact that subbing is relying on someone else's translation, but dub is the same.

  • Plus what makes this dub superior is that they used the dub voices from Inuyasha and not get the SAME voice actors of viz usually gets to dub this. If only they used this cast for Naruto and Bleach.

  • Guys. The dub was epique.

  • ...You won :3

  • Am I the only one who thought the dub was epic?

  • Oh my god, 0:22 that face....

  • UH HUH thats not creepy at allllll O.O

  • Light's reaction to 2 girls, 1 cup.

  • The English dub is superior. I don't really understand how any of those parts were "Bad", I've seen much worse dubs. Take into account that the dubbers have to match the lips and it can be difficult to make it come out not sounding weird.

  • 'I'll take a potato chip... AND EAT IT!'

Arrggghhh, this dub is terrible... Especially to the people who watched it in Japanese first... The voices are just so forced and unnatural and Light sounds like a whiny teenager. Still, each to their own, eh?

  • @supersquare95 Light IS a whiny teenager.

  • @Bleabot This is very true.

  • 0:44 hahahahahahaha ha..... i kill you

  • Clearly made by a Japanese voice fan boy with appreciation for the dub which many find superior in many ways.

  • if he isn't carefull, he will piss himself :l

  • I don't blame him, I laughed at it too. It's nothing compared to the Japanese version. Seriously. Some scenes couldn't be cornier XD

  • I preferred Light's Japanese voice, it had so much subtlety to it, whereas the English one seems a little forced at times. But L's voice I like better in the English, it is not so monotone and frankly, boring as the Japanese one is. Ryuk's voice is better in the English as well. Bottom line is that both versions have their strengths and weaknesses.

  • I´m so happy I watched it in spanish and not english, mexicans really know how to make it a drama.

  • I paused it at 0:21 randomly because my phone rang and I'm laughing my head off

  • Death note is one of the better dubs, I dont know what youre talking about.

  • Hey Light, I'm real happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Death Note had one of the best English dubs of all time! OF ALL TIME! : D

  • I can't blame him if he's laughing at the potato chip thing.....I laught every time I see it XD so dramatic for him eating.....I wonder if that happens everytime he eats.....Note to self:Never have dinner with Light.

  • The English voices were infinetely better than the Japanese ones, what are you saying?

  • @PKRockin7 I am very much against using this word seriously, but he must be a true weeaboo...

  • @PKRockin7 Agreed.

  • this was actually the only decent english dub i've seen....

  • I thought the "I want to tell you I'm L" moment totally worked in English. Yes, the line is a bit awkward, but I think the way L whispers the last two words totally makes it. It's creepily intimate.

  • Oh come on, there were a few flubs like these, but otherwise I was very impressed with the English dub.

  • light : i wanna take the potato , and EAT !

  • I wonder how the voice actor felt when doing the potato chip scene.

  • @Karitwilightmist he loved it.

  • @Karitwilightmist Hopefully pretty epic.

  • @Karitwilightmist he thought it was funny

  • LOL people that only like subs are dumb

  • @UnholyGame That's why I watch both.

  • It doesn't matter how you've watched DeathNote as long as you enjoyed it, obviously, and no one has the right to say otherwise. Ofcourse though opinions are meant to spread and that's what they should be kept as.

  • Best fucking way to eat a potatoe chip. :)

  • Hey, the dubbing wasn't half bad! D:

  • " I'LL TAKE A POTATOE CHIP. . . AND EAT IT!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHahahaha... " XD

  • "I'll take a potato chip... AND EAT IT!!!" :D I'm going to do that at school tomorrow. With... something. XD

  • ppl say that dubs are shit even though they follow on from the mangas. So in that sense you could say that japanese dubs are shit as that is just the ppl who dubbed the animes opinions on how it should sound, same with the english one. On paper words are words and can be interpreted differently by anyone.

  • i have to say, the english laugh is so much better >:D im loving it!...then again i forget how the japanese one went, but im sure i felt i liked this better

  • the engllish is better, im dyslexsic so it's bettter ;P

  • This anime is actually one of my favorite dubs. i thought the characters fit nicely with the voices they were given.

  • Like I said before, the most epic way to eat a potato chip

  • i laughed like that too @ potato chip!

  • This is why they should just sub it. Everything should remain in it's original language otherwise it won't be taken seriously.

  • 0:36 LOL!!!

    "i'll take a potato chip...AND EAT IT!!!"

  • this is actually the ONLY japanese to english dub thats good. Like have u hears the Naruto one! its soooo retarded in english

  • @katherine9997 there are actually a few more. Dragonball Z, One Piece(funimation dub), and Full Metal Alchemist are good in english. There might be a few more tho but thats all I can think of thats good in english lol.

  • @katherine9997 Good ones are usually on Cartoon Network, although I do agree that Naruto dubbed is TERRIBLE. FMA and FMA:Brotherhood are good ones.

  • @katherine9997 The code geas dub is good as well.

  • lol This is funny but that actually was a pretty good dub.

  • I'd always wondered how they would do "Watashi wa L desu." and I guess that's probably as good as it was going to get.

  • I thought Brad Swaile and Alessandro Juliani were great for dubbing Death Note. I don't think Light sounds too nice. Actually, I think he sounds insane at times, and L just sounds creepy. As for Ryuk, how do you expect a Death God from another realm to sound? But, whatever turns your crank.

  • Lighs laugh creeps me out

  • maybe the english VA/dub was great but when u watch DN in Jap. first and then Englsh, u seriously mean that it got killed.

  • as much as i ABSOLUTELY LOVE miyano mamoru, the english VA of light was actually pretty perfect in my opinion. actually, i thought all VAs were picked out well in the english dub.

  • So far the only thing that actually made me wanna watch the Japanese dub over the English dub was the laugh at the final episode. Everything else is just better to me. But I edited the Japanese laugh into the english dub so I no longer have any reason to watch the japanese version.

  • @pegasusmagic001 i kida thought that laugh (while creepy) kicked serious asss

  • i'll take a potato chip... AND EAT IT!

  • dude the english dub kicked ass, especially for those of us who don't speak japanese and would rather listen to the show rather than read the entire thing

  • OH!!! So THAT'S how you spell 'sakujo'! I wondered!

    I love the video!!! :D

LOLed SOOOO hard at this...I agree completely. Death Note's english dub is HORRIBLE.

  • So you pick the only parts out of the whole dub that sounded bad.

    Thanks.

The rest of the dub was pretty fucking awesome, imho.

  • @AntiEtc

Though I do agree that the rest of the dub was pretty awesome, I have to admit, the scenes that they screwed up on were the most important scenes in the series, and it completely destroys the tension. Even the part with Rey Penbar on the train was poorly done. After watching the sub, I had to restrain myself from face-palming every few episodes when the epic scenes get completely ruined by cheesy, and hastily read dialogue.

  • the death note english dub was one of the best!!!!! it takes a lot of skill to pull of some off those characters..

  • Japanese Ryuk: "S-Sorry." *Light chuckles, then bursts out laughing at English L's deep voice*

    English L: I wanted to tell you, -I'm L.-

    Japanese L: |:\ *Light laughs*

    *epic potatoe chip scene*

    *Light continues to laugh*

  • the dub is still better then the Oran English voices.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! umm cool

  • how dare you include the potato chip in this!! thats the best bit about the english dub!!!

  • Yea uhh....the English dub for Deathnote was the best English dub for an anime so far, so I'd postpone that laugh.

  • death note had a better english dub than most anime. but i still perfer the Japanese version

  • 0:21 gets me every time

  • I admit Light, it is pretty funny, but don't get so carried away...

  • lol, this is awesome

  • I think that the actual eating of the potato chip is fairly important. Without it, he would be extremely suspicious, just rummaging around in the bag without actually taking one. Therefore, the amount of emphasis on that line is, I think, justified :) It's like Light is finishing off his plan by making himself seem so unsuspicious.

I do, however, prefer the subbed version. It just seems more authentic and real. And I love Japanese L's voice :)

  • i don't see a problem its one word that is sad badly yes but it doesnt take away from the story

  • wtf? bachm

  • man i know what you're talking about

the original JAPANESE one is WAAAAY better

    the english dub simply sucks

the japanese voice actors ACTUALLY get into their character, it sounds more natural when compared to those crappy english actors

  • Lol xD "I´ll take a potato chip....and eat"

  • LOLGAIZ INELGISH DUB SUXK JAPANESE FTW KAWAII DESU WARUI LOL. AM I COOL YET?

(Also: Everyone has a thousand reasons why the potato chip line is not mind-bendingly stupid in the Japanese version. Like every other argument against English dubs, it boils down to "You can't understand it. Therefore = better.")

  • I'll take a potato chip...AND EAT IT!

  • 0:24 That guy behind Light reminds me of Harry Potter XD

  • lmao thats true!

  • i laughed at the potato chip and when L was all like "i-just-want-to-tell-you-*whispers*->i'm L

  • "I am L."

    "HAHAHAHAHA!!"

It's funny how hysterical he laughs when he hears that xP

  • i'll take the potatoe chip and... eat XD hillarious

  • Every time I have a bag of chips, I announce "I'll take a potato chip...*pant pant*...and EAT IT," and only three of my friends actually get it.

  • "I'll take a potato chip- AND EAT IT!"

^ Say that during lunch time, peoples reactions are priceless XD

  • @JennaLouiseXO

i put it in my phone as a ring tone for that exact reason

in the middle of eating a bag of doritos

    "ill take a potatochip...

    and EAT IT!!!"

  • Light has the best laugh in anime history EVER!!!!!!! XD

  • Light is laughing at his own jokes? I think.

  • I lol'd as much as Light. XD

  • You know...at this point, I'd be willing to go as far as to say Light is even stranger than L is.

  • I'll take a potato chip... AND EAT IT!

  • lol everytime i hear lights laugh i start laughing and giggling with him XDD

lol matsuda looked scared from the english dub

  • I agree with am122808. The VAing is definitely solid.

  • light loves those potato chips.

    (lol, he fell down!)

  • Saying the potato chip line is even more epic when you are at the lunch table with your friends and everyone does it in unison.

  • @Flurryofdancingsnow Damn, I wish I had friends like that! D: ...Or friends at all, for that matter. :D

  • @Flurryofdancingsnow Mah friends and I have done that!!! XD

  • Seriously, i burst out in laughter every time i hear "I'll take a potato chip.. AND EAT IT!" xDD

  • I remember laughing soo hard at light's narraration in the english dub...

"I'll take a potato chip... and EAT IT!" *que dramatic crescendo in music track*

  • Yeah I thought Death Note dubbing was the best I've seen.

    Still, it's better in japanese.

That was fucking funny as hell though. xD

  • the death note english dub had great voice acting

  • @am122808 Best voice acting evar lol

  • @am122808

That voices didn't fit with the characters. And in spannish is WORSE.

  • @am122808 L wasn't good, that was my only problem.

  • hahaha! I'll take a potato chip... and eat it! hahahaha!

  • Wow! I've seen this for the 3rd time already and I'm still laughing at the vid. But seriously, the dub wasn't that bad. At least the dub didn't try to Americanize the show like they did in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

  • Yeah, the eng dub sucks.

This is why most animes should stay japanese. No one wants to see the characters we've come to know and love mutilated by crappy voice actors and the writers' sad attempts at trying to translate the lines while keeping it in sync with the lips (which they don't do)

Plus, they always leave out important plot points.

The only one I found to be decent was FLCL.

Well... Digimon Tamers is okay too; only because Impmon and Beelzemon's eng voices made him more badass.

  • You must not watch much eng dub to say something like that. I watch a combination of both, some shows that has good english and japanese voice actors(like this show). There are others I can't absolutely stand watching in english(naruto) and there some thats so good in english that it makes the japanese look like a joke(yu yu hakusho)

  • @DarthUchiha17

Eureka Seven is another anime I can't stand watching in japanese (Renton having the same voice as naruto and eureka the same voice, or at least when very close to Hinata's is... not good) yet I loved watching it in english so much that it is one of my all time favorite animes.

  • I'm going to take a bag of potato chips to school tomorrow just so i can take the first one out and say, "I'll take a potato chip...heh heh... and EAT IT!" just to see who gets it.

  • I've done that, everyone just looked at me funny xD

  • Lucky for me, a good number of people i sit with are death note fans XD

  • "I'll take a potato chip, and EAT IT."

    Hahahah!!!LOL!!

  • i laughfed close to the end

  • iwanttotellyouthatiml.

  • DN had a good english dub... .don't hate it. But this was still funny because you brought up its weaker points. "I just want to tell youimL."lol

  • The DN isn't that bad. Naruto's dub is bad. DN's is good.

  • English dub FAILS

  • This isnt the worst dubbing I have ever heard, but I admit subs are better

  • i fuckin LOVE potato chips >:D

  • i agree with you to a point, everyone views a dub or original voice cast on there own preference.

dbz for example i like vegeta's english voice better but that doesnt mean i hate all the other english folks hard work they put into it.

  • ryuk, light's and especially L's english voices are much more better than their japanese ones.ryuk sonds more shinigamish.and L sounds more weirder(but thats good,by the way)

  • Screw you all, I love the English dub. Alessandro Juliani especially blows away Kappei Yamaguchi in his role as L.

  • LOL i take a potato chip, and EAT IT

    japanese voice actors <3

  • I agree with you 100%, darkstrayneko. The English voices don't do their characters justice. Every time I watch an English-dubbed Death Note episode, I laugh just like Kira. I swear.

    5/5

  • "ill take a potatoe chip and eat it!" WUHAHAHAHAHA

omg this is so much funnier than in jap or german dubs rly^^

  • Why watch the English dub where L's voice portraying emotion totally throws off his character?

  • Because as we all know, L is not human.

  • xD Oh, there's no way he can be. Look at all that sugar, and not an ounce of fat on that body!

  • Almost got me there. =P However, I know several people in real life who are the same way.

  • I do too, but real life has nothing to do with anime, and L is less emotional and more analytical. I mean come on, he wanted to let those seven people die just to confirm that there was a Kira among one of the eight. >w>;;

  • The fact the real life =/= equal anime makes L's weight make even more sense.

Also, L doesn't need to be emotional to convey the emotion I was specifically referring to: surprise. Could it not be said that L only took this case because he was surprised and intrigued at what Light could do?

  • "i'll take a potato chip and eat it"

huh, didn't realize that line came from the dub. sorta like naruto's "believe it"

  • "I'll take a potato chip...AND EAT IT!"

I will NEVER get sick of that. xP

  • And Neither will I! :D

  • When I first saw that episode, the next day at school I wouldn't stop laughing xDD

  • Me neither. xP

  • I seriously can't eat potato chips with a straight face now. cx

  • lol! Everytime I eat chips, with the first chip, I take it out like Light did, say "I'll take a potato chip...AND EAT IT!" and epically take a bite. lol.
