@kgracemohr Most others are already on youtube (e.g. with Hound Dog Taylor, Koko Taylor). If you really want to see them and others, and in high quality, get the dvd. One of the best $20 you will spend.
unreal great video. never thought I'd ever see what little walter looked like (his stage style) as he rips one riff after another. Thanks for sharing this clip.
i got given a harmonica years ago couldn't get it sounding anything like this, i didnt even know where to start, and its not that im unmusical, i play guitar and piano
@honkyxadonis A few more words than that - Little Walter's playing cross harp style - whatever key your harp is you play five notes down from, so if it's a A harp you play in the key of E, the chord is the 'breathing in' chord. D equals A., etc. To get the blue notes you have to learn how to bend 'em. For tone it's all about the tone pocket you create with your hands between harp and mic. There are some good tuition vids on youtube. Great video XPM, wish Walter was going through an amp!
hey comon you guys havent played all that much if you cant tell by ear or even need to debate the topic..what about hound dog taylor and the houserockers in this its rare!!walter was able to walk in to any club grab a mike and sound great so its told!he perfered the shure pa sys, with the green bullet mike a common pa. for a ball game or the like,,two colums of 6in speakers if you see one grab it in any shape I had my chance and I only took the mic!!silly boy!!
"Little Walter playing acoustically" Err...Rather he is playing into a fixed mic vs a hand held mic. You are forgiven though, since you posted a great jam.
The guitar is acoustic. The acoustic sound it produces, is then mic'd/amplified, via electronic equipment. Since I have never seen a harmonica with built in electronics, I think it is safe to say all harmonicas are "acoustic." So again, why point out in the video description that Walter is playing "acoustically?" As if it were some rare phenomenon. Due to his ignorance or haste, the author was trying to describe Walter playing via a fixed mic vs a hand-held and did not know better.
@at7000 [Edited to be more clear/concise] When mic'd in a cup (preferably tight cup), especially with a low-headroom mic such as old bullet mics, the sound is greatly altered, and different effects can be done. This contributes a LOT to the tone and dynamics (in fact totally changes them), and add distortion. **The cupped mic becomes part of the instrument.** All blues harp players refer to playing as acoustic vs amplified. Don't be so quick to call people ignorant.
@XPMBblues That's interesting. I think I am beginning to understand more clearly- In the modern lexicon of blues harp players, "electric harp" refers to holding a hand-mic right up against the harp, and probably running it through a tube-based, guitar amp. "Accoustic harp" would be more like this- Playing into a fixed mic, and probably running that through the house P.A. I can see the reasoning behind this distinction- As you state- "The tone would be completely different."
@at7000 Yes, but not "electric harp". It's referred to as "amplified harp". I know acoustic playing has to be amplified when recorded from a mic, but so is the terminology. It's a lot easier to say than "harp played through guitar amp via cupped mic"
This was filmed in Germany just a few months before Little Walter died. Proof that anyone who says he'd lost his skills and creativity at the end of his career is so blind that they're not qualified to have their opinion taken seriously!
BTW, this song and the rest of the show it was taken from are legitimately available on DVD. Seach for exactly this: "Legends of" "Tropical Music", and you'll find it.
MAN!!! Singles, doubles, chords, bends, tongue blocking, octaves, slides, wah-wahs, all in one song and all while looking absolutely relaxed. This isn't a performance; it's a CLASS! LOVE IT!!!
Thank you so much! Been waiting for this for a long time. Do you know if there is any more available video footage (apart from track with Koko Taylor) on youtube of Little Walter as I can't order the DVD in this country. Thanks again!
@KidFromDaCity I think it is an E harp played in 2nd position (key of B). As for the type of harmonica, apparently he used Hohner Marine Bands (10-hole richter tuned diatonic).
as a friend of mine says: this has nothing to do with music, it´s religion!
ralrh0901 4 days ago
@ralrh0901 I must respectfully disagree. When I first stumbled on LW recordings, I thought "holy crap, this is some of the best music I ever heard!"
We also have documented proof that Little Walter existed :-)
XPMBblues 4 days ago
@XPMBblues i don´t think our opinions are different because religion exists too and my first thought after hearing LW was the same.
ralrh0901 3 days ago
@ralrh0901 religion has nothing to do with this its pain and life thats makes this kind of music

So if an acoustic guitar is played in front of a fixed mic, it's no longer acoustic? ....
