I don't understand why they call it HOVER-craft when it doesn't even hover. Do you even know what the word hover means?
Hovering (levitation), the process by which an object is suspended by a physical force against gravity, in a stable position WITHOUT SOLID PHYSICAL CONTACT ON ANY SURFACES,...LAND OR WATER.
This hovercraft is still touching the surface, its not really a hovercraft. Its an inflatable-craft.
I take your point cmor, I guess what I meant was that to a kid in the 70s, getting to watch such a futuristic machine up close, with all the noise and smells was a heady mixture. You will have to forgive an old man of 43 his nostalgia trip.
Well, I've just turned 28, and I always found them awe inspiring. They still draw crowds of onlookers at every crossing, which is more than you could say for any other type of passenger ferry.
I miss the old srn6 where you entered at the nose of the craft, the doors opened upward like a delorian car....Sigh...good memories of diesel fumes and sea spray
I am from the IOW and still miss the old place...i remember the first test hovercraft (we called them 'cushion craft' comeing up on the beach in Bembridge when I was a kid...
haha i love goin on the hovercraft :P makes me feel special cos im the only out of my friends where i live that go on it xd i miss the island =/ go 2 or 3 times a year now tho =P woooo xD
Visited there back in 2005, loved the place. Wished I would have found the hovercraft, ended up travelling over on the WightLink ferry from Portsmouth.
The fastest but noisiest way across the Solent

No it flies (hovers) just above the surface of the water or ground. The inflatable skirt is just a mechanism to channel the airflow!

You still get the smell of deisel today, all the modern craft run on diesel.
The N6's had (aircraft type) turbo prop engine's so they probably ran on aviation fuel.

Speaking of the Isle of Wight, isn't that where controversial author David Icke lives?
