they were clapping and smiling because of her speech which gave them a sense of hope. it gave them comfort and the knowledge that life will go on, they will prevail. and they can lean on each other as they continue to achieve what they hope to achieve yet did not think they could. she gave them a sense of unity and a hope when our world was falling apart.
