It's acctually based from a book called "The First Circle" (V Kruge Pervom) by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
This clip is fascinating because there is a very recent Russian series based on this book by the same title, directed by Gleb Panfilov. That white/blue bus is exactly the same in both versions. And the prelast shot with the piano music is VERY reminiscent of Panfilov's film "TEMA"("Theme") which uses Shubert's music throughout.

The Book is Awesome, one of the best books i have ever read, i cant wait to get hold of another Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn book.
