  • They liked to clown around but their harmonies are dead on.

  • This is where we are reminded they really were singers

  • I saw the Sha Na Na live back in the 80's. Same guys that were on the show. I love Sha Na Na, and I've seen them in concert a few times. Nothing beats the line up that was on the show.

    Unfortunately Chico passed away.

  • @Eloraci "Dirty" Dan has as well!

  • I didn't know until now how great a voice he has. Surprised.

  • Donny sure got a lot of noogies on this show. First with rocks and hammers in "16 Tons" and now this!

  • They all look, sing and act like choir men, makes me wanna cry!

  • Don't let the dumb greaser act fool you: Bowzer is a Julliard grad and clearly an accomplished musician.

  • Bowzer looks like the Geico commercial guy with that hair...

  • this is an awesome version but I still love the country version by the Browns( Jim Ed Brown) but this is still excellent

  • This is the BEST version of this song I've heard. Pity Bowzer didn't persue a solo career, he has such an awesome voice.

  • @53Explicit He's got a band. Lenny and Johnny join him occasionally for concerts.

  • Bowzer stuied at Julard before he got in with this groupe..

    A blessed voice he has..

  • BONG

  • What a beautiful lyric tone Bowser has. He is awesome singing the melody. And who could blame him for choking just a little at the end of one of the most moving pop songs ever? A talented comic with a great voice, and totally underrated.

  • Johnny,Donny and Bowser's voices all blended so well on this song. Whomever stated that Bowser got choked up on this song, was right,he did at the end of it. I speak from having saw the show when it first aired on television. I remember all of them!

  • Божественно!!!!

  • Way Cool!

  • After discounting all the goofing around and silliness, a really nice job singing the song. A bit of a testimony to their talent.

  • Not even with Boozer do they even come close to the BROWNS !

  • @blueticecho Jim Ed STILL has a great voice!

  • Bowser.....you go with that voice!!!

  • This is very good, but my favorite Bowser lead is "I can't help falling in love with you".

  • I agree with the comments that 'Bowser' can sing as well as being 'Mr Bassman'.

I like the comedy, too. However, for a different version of the lyrics, listen to the Barron Knights' version: 'The Chapel Lead is Missing' from their album 'Night Gallery'.

  • GO BOWZER!!!!!!!!

  • @shurock50317 hey jimmy is that you? I'm Nick Amato's wife, Toni, if that's you. Bowser is a classic baritone and amazing. I live in sha na na land on youtube. They just don't make acts like this anymore. Johnny Contardo and Bowser made Sha na na. If I'm wrong about who I think this is please forgive me and just glad you are a Sha na na fan too.

  • We love this What a lark. Jimmy Brown would have loved it too!

  • I enjoyed listened to this better than viewing. The "Bowser has a totally awesome bass in the lead and the blend is very good on this song. Agree with Cranky that his Ghostriders version is terrific!

  • Without the video it sounds similar to what The Statler Brothers might sound like, though I don't know if they ever did a version of this or not.

  • One of the most touching parts of the show I'd ever seen (and I watched it faithfully every week), was that at the end of this skit, even with the comedy and usual light- heartedness of the guys, Bowser, looked like he was not only touched, but moved, I swear it looks like tears in his eyes.

  • @darkewolfe1 Yeah it does look like he got all misty. Don't know if that was for the ending of the song or something personal. More than likely it was part of the act.

  • sha-na-na are the best thing going keep their music handy. we oldsters thank-you

  • Great singing, but the comedy how doesn't fit with this song.

  • good job. not at all offensive. there goal in everything they did was to make ppl feel good. and they did a good job here.

  • Love Edith Piaf version, and the Browns and this one surprised me ... very goos Bowser.... if you want a comedy version , look for the brilliant Barron Knights.

  • I know this was a serious song and they did a great job with it, but how did they not break up during it because of the silliness?

  • I agree with the posters here in that they didn't have to make a comedy routine while singing this song, because Bowser did do a beautiful job singing the song. I have heard this song from the time I was a child, and the country group that made it popular was the Browns. I always loved hearing them sing it.

  • One of my favorite songs, but I love it. They are so funny and I love Jons voice. I wish he had taken the lead more. Thanks for posting.

  • BOWZER! i have a newfound respect. he should have sang lead more.

  • It just seems strange watching to me a happy and sad song made fun of.

just my opinion not that it matters.

I remember when I was 5 listening to this and crying cause he died strange also.

I am 49 years old wow how fast ones life realy goes by.

  • The laugh track ruins it! they sing it great!

  • Some people, without listening to them, declare that they are a lousy comic band.

Lousy my neck! They can pull this all off...you know, the looks, the way they move, the way they present themselves...because they've got what it takes! They've got great talent, great harmony with great voices, and a great band to pull it off! LOVE Sha na na!

  • Jon 'Bowzer' Bauman is great! What a voice :)

  • well i totly agree with u irinkaification i love the 50s music and these guys say it all have fun enjoy not kick the freck out of someone cos he is diffrent

  • Awesome! I adore it!!!!! I ADDDDDOOOOORRREE

Sha-na-na! I don't care what others say. I adore these guys.

  • The Browns meet the Three Stooges meet Fosse the chorographer. If you ever need a laugh, this is it !!!

  • i thought they were pretty good

  • What the world needs today is Sha Na Na to come back, with Bowzer, hellz yeah!!!.... If this were on our tubes on a Saturday night, rather than some crummy reality show, or some half ass band of no talent celebrity jack assas, I think the world would be a better place!!!

  • You said it all man. Thank You!!! I love Sha Na Na. Watched then every saturday night.

  • Great job guys! I'm glad to see then Donny came back to life after he "keeled" over!

  • I saw this the first time it aired and never saw it again until just now, but I never forgot it. It was the first time I heard Three Bells. Despite the silly antics I fell in love with the song. They (and the song) were that good.

  • was that billy crystal i saw

  • I wish they had not played this song for laughs because if they had done it with the respect it deserved, it would have been very powerful. Other than that, it was sung beautifully and just serves to show how very talented they all were and I am sure most still are.

  • I agree with you, msymsed! We could have done without the comedy just for this one song because it's a serious one.Otherwise,Jon Bauman was awesome on lead vocals, which is something he wasn't all that noted for.

  • Bowser does a fine job. By the way, despite the antics, a beautiful melody still comes through. This simple tune was one of the nicest pieces of music of that era.

  • I forgot about this one. I love how they can make you laugh and love listening to their singing at the same time. This one really puts a smile on my face.

  • Bowser!!!!!!

  • Thi's my Mom's Fave Song, LOL!!

  • bravo

    les americains

    hommage a Edith

    bravo

    great

    great

    in my heart

    love from France

  • Johnny's looking and sounding like an angel, of course!!

  • Comment removed

  • That smile could light the world a hundred time over!

  • Of course! Johnny Angel!! LOL. And that little glimpse of a smile at 1:31... aahhhh, MELT!

  • Bowzer looks very sweet at 2:52.

  • Bowser is the best bass singer

  • I must say this again: IF you love SNN as I do you can go to their official website and under LINKS at the bottom is a link to Sha Na Na Fan Pages by Cheryl and then on her site there is a link saying "HELP GET THE SHA NA NA VARIETY SHOW ON DVD!" I wrote my letter so PLEASE write yours. THIS IS TERRIFIC MUSIC.. Puts a smile on my face every time.♥

  • its a shame. . . now days anyone can "sing". . . we have gone from this to britney spears. . . what has the world come to?

  • Agreed 100%!Britney Spears can only dream of singing that good!

  • sha na na was never considered top notch but they were sure a lot of fun, took things seriously as entertainers and most of the group had clear talent, bowser gets dissed anymore but he did have a good voice.

  • Feardancer thank you so much to posting this great group really they are supergreat to bad this days we dont have this great art anymore

    anyway thank you so much

  • IF you love SNN as I do you can go to their official website and under LINKS at the bottom is a link to Sha Na Na Fan Pages by Cheryl and then on her site there is a link saying "HELP GET THE SHA NA NA VARIETY SHOW ON DVD!"

  • I never before heard Bowser sing lead and I loved it. He really had a great voice!

  • I'm OK....this was TOP

    felt bad ...feel good now

    Kimm

  • A legit bass man is rare, and one who can really sing is VERY hard to find. I always wished Bowser would sing lead more often. He does a mean "Ghost Riders in the Sky."

  • Yes, he really had a beautiful voice. I almost think he could have sung opera if he'd wanted to. At least I wish I could've seen him do Figaro's aria from The Barber of Seville.

  • @kangadillo certainly he could have done Gilbert and Sullivan very well

  • @stevegale1948 That's right! I can imagine him singing "I Am a Pirate King" from the Pirate King in "The Pirates of Penzance!"

  • The lead singer for Crash Test Dummies always appealed to me for this reason. Too bad they also went by the wayside.

  • Sha Na Na never got the recognition they deserved for actually being talented musicians and vocalists.

  • this is SHA NA NA at their VERY Best

  • I loved this show as a kid. They have such a tight sound on this song. I hope they have a dvd of thier shows soon!!!!

  • I also never knew how beautiful of a voice Bowser had. I have always loved this song by Jim Ed Brown and his sisters but Bowswer does this song absolutley perfect!!! I am stunned.

  • Ahoy, Maties,

I postedthis to my MdDS support site, One Fine Dock Rocker."

  • I prefer Bowzer in the Golden Oldies infomercial.

  • I remember watching this show as a teenager. I never realized what a beautiful singing voice Bowser had until I viewed this. Thanks for posting a great video.

  • i loved thi s show, i used to watch it all the time, it came on tbs, i love them covering this tune

  • I remember seeing a Sha Na Na show in which Bowser stepped out of character to sing an honest-to-goodness bass solo. It was absolutely STUNNING ! He just humbly acknowledged the applause of the audience. One of the greatest songs sung by a very fine bass soloist! Too many years ago, I'm really sorry I can't remember the name of the song!

  • Jim...was it "It's All In The Game"? Because I remember him doing that. And he sounded WONDERFUL!

  • I honestly cannot remember, because it was so many years ago. But I can pretty much remember being stunned at how good he sounded. And yes, I do remember it was a very unusual song for that show! I would love to see that performance, again !

    Best wishes, Jim

  • BOWZER IS A LEGEND

  • Thanks for posting this!!!

  • LOL Bravo! Brilliant visual comedic performance at its finest! Classic Sha-na-na.

  • Bowser rules

  • They always make me feel good. I am 40 and appreciate this a great deal. Thank you for posting.

  • Bowser! what a voice! you kids (I am a 55 year old boomer) missed a lot! Rest in peace Chico!

  • I am having a Sha Na Na marrathon here. I was going to watch 1, but I lost count several minutes ago. I need to go to bed since it is after 2 AM, but I can't. I have to watch more!

  • Luv it!

  • This is fantastic! Surely, heaven will have some Shanana - I've always loved these guys. Rest in peace, Chico!

  • gene, your jealousy is showing... and nothing else. (here wacker..here boy)

  • Wow, you can see my lard ass from so far away. Most people say that I am so skinny that when I turn sideways I disappear. The puss is clean. It is away from your fowl mouth.

  • By and by gene, I was only teasing. However, considering how upset you got, I guess it hit homm. Sorry. Had I known I never would have said something so insensitive. Don't they have a pill or medical procedure for that?

  • home not homm - sorry. I also left off a comma. I love spell check. Wish I could use it here.

  • Too Fantastic! Funny, and Great! That's how I'd do it IF I Could!

  • omg i really love this song you made my day

  • I hope heaven has some Sha Na Na! These guys have amazing talent and would do anything for a laugh!

  • This show was the SHIT when I was growing up. Never missed it! Thanks for the post

  • It was the Sha Na Na variety series, airing from 1977 to 1981. There are a lot of SNN videos on here, very entertaining.

  • tnx :-)

  • Jim Ed brown and the browns did this song did a great job

  • I've seen Jim Ed in person twice. Once in Tennessee and once in Georgia.

  • Wow. Loved it. Bowzer was great, as were they all! Enjoyed this irreverent version just as much as all the other versions of this song that I have watched today! I LOVE YOUTUBE!! Thanks for sharing.

  • anywonder why they got a tv show,? think man, pure talent, , mind set, and one fucking sense of humor

  • best music show ever

  • We need this show to come out on DVD!

Very corny, but the BEST KIND of corny!

  • Gotta love "Winged it's way to Heaven"

  • I loved this, one of my favorites! This brings back so many memories, I really enjoyed, thanks

  • man love it bowzers cool

  • great voice yes, plus - imho - this is one of their funniest skits when they are "ringing" chapel bells lmao - I also love it when Bowzer sings "Mr. Bass Man" wish that was posted here :)

  • I love the bell "ringing" too. I also like how Donny just keels over in this song, lol.

  • I vaguely remember him dropping to the floor after seeing his head disappear here - too funny - thanks for all the videos you posted here, I had a blast watching them. I was fortunate enough to be around to watch their show, brings back a flood of memories :)

  • Genkimark BOSWER STILL HAS IT, JUST SAW HIM IN THE SUMMER

  • I agree,Jason. I think Bowzer will ALWAYS have it! I saw him in 2003,2005 & will be seeing him again in a couple of weeks.:-)

  • Uuuppss, don't tumble - weed ... oh, my God, I think I might die laughing....LLOLOLOLOLOL

  • Bowzer actually has a good voice!

  • I agree, but this is a thousand miles from their heyday.

  • GREAT!!!! I love when Bowzer gets to actually sing instead of "do-wopp" ing in the background!
