the trick is , the stripes on the disks have to be with formed holes, so little air vortexes are created between the disks, little compressed vortexes rub against each other and producing static loads... see same principles on schaubergers vortex device.

However, the very clear closeup at the beginning of this video I recognize that the 'grid' with the Methernitha nameplate looks very much like a section of a conventional radiator or oil cooler.
