The Georgia Railroad along with the Southern Railway were the last railroads in the South to run passenger. The Georgia fearing they would lose its state tax exemption, The Southern feeling they could make money of passengers wanting to experience pre-Amtrak service. The Southern bowed out on Feb 1st 1979 due to overwhelming costs to replace its engines and cars. The train was given to Amtrak the next day. The Georgia ended service in April 1983, ending railroad owned trains in the south.
