(i) Four years after the massacre of Karbala, the Shia of Kufa attempted to make ammends for their desertion of Hussain (رضّى الله عنه). They called themselves the Al-Tawwabun, which translates to the Penitents. This group went to Karbala to comemmorate Hussain (رضّى الله عنه), and here it was that they began Matam, with loud mourning, lamenting, and self-flagellation. These Tawwabun
Ibn Katheer al Nasibi writes in al Bidayah wa al Nihaya, Volume 8 Page 1108 published by Nafees Academy Karachi:
"In contrast to the Shi'a, the Syrians would prepare nice foods, adorn themselves with special clothes, wear perfumes and treat the day of martyrdom as day of great happiness (Eid). A variety of foods were cooked to show their great happiness and pleasure. The purpose behind all this was to act different to the Shi'a.

(ii) hit themselves to punish themselves for the cowardice that they had shown that led to their Imams death just four years earlier. This is the origin of the Shia ritual of Matam. It is altogether amusing how the Shia never really wonder where this barbaric custom started from or why it started in the first place. Little do they know that it is a testament to this day of how they killed their own Imam, and how their whole religion is centered around a false commitment to the Ahlel Bayt.
in Fadhail Sahaba, Volume 2 page 675 Tradition 1154:
"Narrated on the authority of Ahmed bin Isra'el: 'I read in the book of Ahmed bin Muhammed Bin Hanbal written by his own hand writting on the authority of Aswad Bin Amer Abu Abd Arrahman on the authority of Al-Rubay bin Mundher on the authority of his father that Al-Hussain use to say: 'Whomsoever eyes cries a drop of tears on us or sheds a one drop of tears on us, Allah will reward him with paradise'
It is stated in Sunan al Tirmidhi Volume 5 page 657:
Salma narrated: 'I witnessed Umm Salma in a weeping state. I asked her as to what made her weep. Salma replied: 'I have seen the prophet in such a state in a dream- that his head and his beard were stained with dust. I said, 'Oh Apostle of God, what made you like this?'. He replied: 'I witnessed the killing of Husayn'''.
The Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) forbade barbaric practices like matam, and he said: No harm may be inflicted on oneself.
Allah Almighty condemns the pagans for the barbaric way in which they would worship:
Their [pagan] prayer at the House (of Allah) was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands; therefore taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve! (Quran, 8:35)
