you can't compare him to hendrix. this is a citar. not a guitar ok guys? if hendrix was a citar player, then ok you can say this is better if this is your opinion. but there's no way you can compare them. hendrix and ravi are both amazing at what they do
@anamarie8 U are absolutely right, i have watched the Bangladesh concert movie too & the music was in a set of three 33 rpm long play records, then...
@bighock58 A damn good reason why if you mean AFTER this festival. Ravi saw Hendrix burn his guitar & make lewd movements with it too at Woodstock. This is the complete opposite of the Indian attitude to classical music & instruments. It was viewed as sacriligeous. Nick
@tripmonk0 you might be thinking of the monterey pop festival, or the astoria theater in london... but jimi hendrix did not burn a guitar at woodstock
@indurnuguri1 While I was not at Woodstock, I remember the TV coverage of Ravi Shankar, and have never forgotten him, now of course it's great to see him again here, to be able to listen and watch, and agree with your comment. :))
Woodstock was NOT Ravi's "final pop concert performance ever". He played several rock fests after Woodstock. Just citing Atlanta Intl Pop Festival (70), the Concert for Bangladesh (71), Erie Canal Soda Pop (72) from the top of my head--and Danish Roskilde (as late as 1975 even, where I witnessed the man myself).
I recently went to a live perfomance of classical Indian music and I can guarantee that if this is beautiful, then hearing it perfomed in the flesh is even more sublime - I absolutely recommend the experience
@davelazio My opinion is wrong? No, it isn't. Perhaps you meant to say, "I don't agree with your opinion". I probably wouldn't agree with yours either, so it's ok.
Oh my! The guy on the left is Ustad Alla Rakha and he plays the indian dual drum "tabla" and then there is Pt. Shankar with his sitar, and then a student with a "Tanpura" ....i suggest wikipedia!!!
Cannot thank you enough for uploading this. Been looking for this for years - was under the general impression that Ravi Shankar's performance was never recorded!
Mesmerising stuff. Ustad Allah Rakha's stunning tabla play needs a mention, too.
There should be many such footages that did not find its way into the film/album...maybe its time for an update now, if Scorcese is listening!

Pandit Ravi Shankar's musical genius is unparalleled. To me, he will remain the greatest musical exponent I ever listened.
This man is a Genius.

Sublime! For those of you don't know the Tabla player is Ustad Allah Rakha Khan, a great maestro himself.

Dominik19Z 11 months ago
@Dominik19Z Its not a sitar. Its called a "tanpura" used as a drone for ambience and intonation :)
