Does anyone have any tips please for doing backbends from standing . I can do them from kneeling o problem but would dearly love to know how to go from standing. Which muscles need to be developed, etc.. Many thanx in advance
The way I learned, since I'm not flexible enough to do them like a gymnast, is to stand with your legs bent deeply at the knee, almost like siting without a chair, then arch your back as much as you can, and then fall onto your arms. You will want to strengthen your arms mostly, and practice arching your back. Plaese be very careful with this and only practice with many pillows under you, and stretch a lot before you try.
Many thanx for the tips. I'm gona give that a go. I had thought of practising on my bed as its well padded. When I learnt backbends from kneeling i never tried without lots of floor cover just in case!
Just a thought - does it not hurt the elbows to drop on your arms? I havent had chance to practise that tip yet as busy weekend but I was visualising it and surely you have to brace the arms and palms out flat. Whats best position for the head? Sorry , lots of questions
Oh what I do is I bend my elbows and add kind of a little bounce when I fall on them so as not to take all the weight onto them. Don't lock them because that could harm you. Keep them bent and try to take the force in your arm muscles instead of the elbows. Hmm I think your head will just follow with the movement. No problem, I don't want you to harm yourself.
Sorry to keep bothering you. Thanx for the extra tip. At the moment I am building up leg flexibility and back flexibility again. I gave birth to my daughter 11 weeks ago and spent 10 weeks on bed rest so am building back up gradually so as not to cause any muscle damage. But now ive tried the leadup to these backbends what you say makes more sense. Thanx again
Congrats on your birth! Oh wow, that was quite recent, yes please do take it easy and work gradually. Try some light yoga for awhile too for more flexibility. You're welcome!
I think all my years of bellydance helped cos the labour was a total of 90 minutes from start to finish and no time for pain relief! But yoga does work as i tried that before i was pregnant and i think a lot of people underestimate its value.
I had my first child when i was 18 and i started bellydance at 15 and i am now 37 so its always worth the effort. thats why i always look on youtube for new ideas to try. but i also love Nagwa Fouad and it seems to me a real shame that to be considered good nowadays one needs to be a gymnast. just an opinion. Nagwa uses lots of feminine arm and hip work without flashing her 'bits'. I have had people fone and ask if i also strip!!!!!! No way!!!
I do the same thing, looking on youtube for new ideas. Is Nagwa Fouad another dance style? Oh yeah, I get asked the same thing, popular culture these days associates bellydance with stripping. It is quite sad.
Nagwa Fouad is one of the alltime greatest egyptian dancers. If you type in Nagwa Fouad in the search box you will get some truly wonderful clips of her dancing.I am trying to set up a business in The Netherlands where I live marketing my own made-2-measure dance costumes, classes and performances. The bellydance scene in this country is not so widespread, sadly.
Did you see some of Nagwa Fouads clips. She is also referred to as the 'Princess of Cairo'. I have a cd with some of her favourite music . Wonderful. But you will see what I mean about her dancing - its feminine and graceful and ladylike without being tacky as sadly some dancers are nowadays.
that is amazing... i was feeling pretty good about what i could do (because i could do all the floorwork you were experimenting with, but then i saw you do that leg thing... that was amazing. tht shot me down Well done. im not that supple, but theres still time lol. very very fluid.
nice fluid moves but just think beforehand where u r gona do your backbend. When u perform backbends with an audience 9 times out of 10 theres gona be NOOO carpet so think ahead where u r gona do this. And no frontal crotch to your audience so just be careful what u intend to wear when you do these moves- even with harem pants make sure you don't succumb to the dreadful 'camel toe'- wear ém loose round the crotch area but not so that they end round your ankles!!
nice positioning (never ''crotch'' your audience) doing floorwork, those backbends are killer, you can work on ''spoon'' moves later on, basic techniques and hip articulating well in place, not bad at all...
Wonderful Cassie...absolutely beautiful. I saw no problems with your arms, and as for floorwork, that was awesome, but remember not to "think" about your next move. You're so fluid, so transfer that to the floor. Nicely done :)
Beautiful & Mysterious....

Oh I see, I'll look her up then. Oh cool, that sounds great. If it's not that widespread, then you have less competition.

You have a lot of strength to do backbends, but no technique. Find a teacher who specializes in floorwork and learn! Nice start!
