  • thats what my guitar teacher said lol

cycle of fifths is a language

if you want to speak its slang

you have to learn its language first.

  • you have so much energy ha, I really hope you are a music teacher in schools!

  • "in order to break the rules, you have to learn them first"

    yep

  • i hada teahc once that told me that u have ur hand right? thumb is no.1 pinky no.5 and u play 1 4 5 so if ur key is in C ur thumb is C so then u go up C D E F G so you play the chords C F G together and then the chord after that which would be sixth would be minor chord which would be Am and he told me it just keeps going like that. i didnt get to finish the lessons and i was wondering if u ever heard of anything like that?

  • walt, how would you suggest i really start learning about guitar and music. Im using wiliam leavitt book right now, but how can i learn to make music fast.

  • that´s a GREAT book. i use it. but i recommend, before you get into it, that you know the guitar fretboard. and by knowing it i mean, being able to recognize, on the stop, every single note there is on it. which up to the 12th fret -because after that, they all repeat- are 72 notes (12 frets x 6 strings). master the fretboard BEFORE you attempt to read music. The next step would be to get familiar with the notes on the staff, and then how to find them on your guitar.

  • If you find it hard to understand the circle of fifths, just learn your scales in solfge (Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do) it will make things a lot more easier.

  • YEAH!!! I UNDERSTAND NOW!!!! ITS BASICALLY LIKE IN ENGLISH WHERE WORDS MAKE UP SENTENCES THE CIRCLE OF FIFTHS IS THE LANGUAGE FOR HOW TO WRITE MUSIC OR HOW TO PLAY ONE CHORD IN RELATION TO ANOTHER CHORD IN A SONG!! AM I RIGHT?? hopefully i get the gist of this ive been trying to figure this theory or "rule" for the longest time

  • best way for u to understand that ur right is to try it..... but yes chords are the language of music

  • walt you are my hero!!!!!!!! love love love you!

  • HEY WALT , YOU CHANGED YOUR WEBSITE AND I CAN'T FIND THE LIVE CHAT ROOM PLACE :( i wish i could participate again ! let me know where to find it please!

  • type in my website + /live

  • Hmmm... the Rule of the Circle of Fifths... good way to put it. It actually does make sense to me. Thank you Walt!

  • You didn't really explain why the circle of fifths is important other than it is a rule. What rules does it dictate? Like moving around in key. How moving from one scale to the next works and why. Maybe a followup?

  • He did... watch it again. The circle of fifths is used to determine what key you are either playing in or trying to form a song around. It's the bomb, if you learn it off hand you should be able to jam with just about anyone, no matter what they are playing or even what instrument they are using.

  • If I said play in the key of A major - the ciorcle of fifths shows that A has 3 sharps. Those are the three sharpened notes in the piece. If you didn't know that then you would be playing outof key :)

  • and the church says AMEN hahaha

  • Edutaining as usual. AdTab International

  • Can you do a video or do you have a video on how to know by ear or differentiate between minors and majors?

  • I liked that last question the most. :)

I see many lessons that explain HOW something works, but people never explain WHY it's important and you need to learn about it. :)

For me personally, I'll be a lot more motivated to learn something if I know what use I will have of it, rather than just learning something that seems really pointless.

  • w00t!! amazing!! and helpful!!!!!!
