Wow people really want to take you apart in these comments just for fucking speaking. Hope that taught you a valuable lesson. And your room is so dirty you should do some tidying.
I've had a look at the previous comments already. A few were right to say that you could have been informative more. You weren't a bad panelist, I just think that people nowadays just think 'oh yes we need reform' and not look at the surrounding issues. I agree with that they can't fiddle the books, the state always wins those arguments and I agree. You can see that you understand politics, but I think it didnt show up the most on QT.
A nice audition. You summarized your views well while humoring your audience - which is always a great means of getting your thoughts across without boring your listeners.
Contributions to question time from the audience (and often the panel) seem to require a minimum inanity level. This video was far too good, you ought to have just ranted indignantly about BRITISH JOBS or RED SQUIRRELS or something, then they'd be sure to accept you. It's just common sense.
And so you're suggesting it is "common sense" to have constitutional reform despite the fact that we operate in a system which has worked effectively for hundreds of years and has been the system of government that has been the subject of numerous emulations.
And your saying this is the crunch time because..what exactly? MP's fiddled the books a bit?
Not what i'd deem common sense, but hey im the tory monarchist, what do i know?
you could argue that its worked effectively... but i would say that the more we learn about the political system the more we realise how thoroughly inept it is.
the fact is that MPs didnt fiddle the books, theyre in a position to be able to change the rules so they literally CANT fiddle the books.
It isn't the system thats inept it is the players within it. You wouldn't change your plate if you didn't like the food upon it would you.
That is why above all we just need another general election, elect new representatives, see some real change and people will re engage themselves with the political system they are becoming disillusioned with.
change the plate? the plate isnt responsible for the food, but i would go to another restaurant (if we're gonna persist with this analogy)
the political system in this counrty is TOO indirect. indirect isnt bad but there needs to be a balance. the people need more power than general election alone.
so the US has the most corruption but THAT is down to the system? seems a bit of a double standard.
everything needs changing not just the system. i outline a few ideas reagarding elected representatives in some of my comments above.
and i wouldnt say i advocate american politics, but in a social climate where a nation's leader carrys much more responsibility than just legislating an elected head of state seperate to the legislature is surely a possibility that must be considered
How is it a double standard that the US political system gives rise to corruption
Seniority based promotions are an example. As to be re elected, you need a good campaign, so you either need to be from the rich elite or have financial backers, financial backers means adopting their policy for your own.
an elected head of state is a double standard! You can't give separate mandates to two legislaters. The US financial crisis bill went from 3 pages to 300, a mess of contradictory opinions.
read the last paragraph of your previous post. considering your stand point on the players vs game point, id say that thats a double standard.
and i really dont advocate american politics but the principle of separate powers within government is something that has to be looked at.
an elected head of state is a model that works worldwide. legislators still have to pass the laws, the executive is merely an enforcer, with the ability to suggest laws.
Oh you mean because I stated that the British political system doesn't give rise to corruption? Well it doesn't whereas the US political system does.
An elected head of state is a model which works worldwide and we have one in this country too, it's called the Prime Minister. Not an official head of state but undoubtably one nonetheless.
The US president is meant to be just a policy suggestor yes but in actual fact has become the prime legislator.
Liam, looking at your post below about our political system being too indirect... I agree completely mate. We need US Style primaries for MPs. Parliamentary parties have too much power over who represents them in an election. This is why so many struggle to get in politics. If you're not raised up in 'the elite', you're quickly ruled out.
Why not talk about the treasonable financial and moral drive by shooting that has been exercised on the people by the New Labour party over the last 11 years?
A bolus of procrastinative deceitful morally vacuous parasitic usurers who's only gifts to the country are rhetoric and penury.
We've been lied to and stolen from.
They're a bunch of ill qualified pseudo-intellectual visionless inhumane directionless middle class chavs.
well... sort of. to be fair neither of us know what the BBC criteria for a peoples pannellist is.
my main problem is with the electoral system in this country. i would highlight the fact that the only real say we have is our elected representatives who's personal opinions are curbed by the party line. theres a comment here somewhere on my ideas about legislative elections.
An agenda on my part would do no good. if you have an agenda you cant really step back and approach things pragmatically
Go for the electoral system, especially at a time where no one has elected G Brown, Mandelson and a host of other unelected unaccountable yes men.
Then of course there's Alan Sugar, who lied for Tony Blair. He said the economy was fine yet all his stuff has "Made in China" on the bottom. If the economy's was so good here why make them there, because it's better maybe?
Good luck, remember you can't prepare for everything, but you can be ready for anything.
I feel if you're trying to persuade the BBC to let you take part in Question Time, then you want to be as informative and persuasive as possible in the maximum time allowed. To be honest, I don't think the first 35 seconds of the full minute did you justice, and instead could've been time spent making your primary points more important to the overall speech.
But, it was different to the other ones i've seen, in a good way, so well done for that. Hope you make it!
i could have made those points, but then id just blend in with the rest of the CV type vid responses. and my CV is threadbare. im politically aware but in terms of a video my hand was forced.

Italy has so much going for it (culture, scenery, history, cars, weather and the best food in the world) that even your leader (speaking as a non-italian) couldnt spoil that.
it sounds a bit sicophantic but i do bloody love italy.
really enjoyed the video Liam and I'd be pleased to see you appear on question time. I also agree with one of your comments that we should adopt a similar political system to the US.
im sure youll know (but for the other reading this) the US political system was set up to prevent a tyranical (sp?) branch of gov. its gotten to the stage now where to many governmental processes are archaic (again spelling?) and only serve the few. the ENTIRE system is in need of, not reform, but overhaul
absolutely. I'm very disheartened at the state of many things in UK politics, from the system to widespread policy, but it's far from the only flawed system in Europe. look at somewhere like Italy (where I come from) whose government and system is truly shambolic.
wish there were more people like you who clearly know their stuff politically.
perhaps some of my cynicism comes from my left-wing bias and hatred of berlusconi but there are always problems with corruption and numerous scandals which he always comes well out of in Italy. I'm not so much against proportional representation and there are some good things about Italian politics but I'm just very critical of it while the government is led by such an idiot who has created laws to stop himself from going to prison.
I strongly dislike Boris but Berlusconi is far worse!
i think thats the nature of power though, and not any type of electoral system. Anyone at the top is going to want to stay there, its just how ruthless you are when you get to the top.
In this country the expenses scandal is ok by the letter of the law... as is an unelected PM.
good points. yeah, and Berlusconi has tried pretty much everything to strengthen his grip on the country. you're right about hating the game not the player though I find it hard to hide my hatred for the likes of Berlusconi.
We obviously know you don't care about the environment wasting that paper on... jokes?
Please do tell me what you think should happen with the government itself, not about what should happen to those with beliefs and I read your reply to "Frailea" but you haven't answered the question for me, at all.
What can i do? nothing... i work in retail and have no personal aspirations to work in politics myself. as the peoples panellist i would hope to hold other panel members accountable for their actions.
Personally i think that a similar but not identical system to america should be adopted.
With elections to executive office seperate from the legislature. running ouy ot characters to therell be another reply continuing this idea.
The cabinet would be formed from a personal choice from the elected executive. this would give the legislature opportunity to concentrate on their constituents and the moral quandrys of political life instead of chasing ministerial positions.
The legislature would be a single chamber body and would ideally be based around pork barrell politics. another comment
sorry about spelling btw, im trying to rush through this.
pork barrel politics is derided as something that provides no conclusions in political debate. but truth be told this would at least reflect the views of the constituents they represent rather than toeing the party line.
to further this idea i would remove any volunteering in the legislative body. with names as an MP being drawn out of a hat similar to jury duty.
then, you give them fixed 5 year terms without possibilty for re-election.
and thats how i would run parliament. any policy based questions? since you mention it i just voted green for the EU elections. and the paper i used was ripped from a letter i received in the post.
in my opinion (and experience) university isnt for everyone. Its tough to say whether too many people are going. whats for sure is that the goverments insistance on setting targets pressures students, teachers, parents... literally anyone involved into promoting higher education almost exclusively.
well put it this way Labour's Universities Minister David Lammy told the BBC last week graduates 'should try leaving UK' - surely this is an indication that too many are coming out at the end with worthless pieces of paper. Precisely! the plate isn't responsible for the food as the system isn't responsible for the corruption and ineptitude of the elected representatives!
People do not need power nor do they know what to do with it. Direct democracy is ineffectual and impractical.
And how can you advocate american politics and be a fan of direct democracy.
The USA has the biggest corrupt governance the world has ever seen and that is all down to their politcal system.
