It would be rather pointless, but hypothetical a war today would be a very different sort of conflict when compared to the Third Indochina War.
I think China puts too much emphasis on missiles. Missiles definitely are powerful:
1. Gets to target *very* quickly and very hard to defend against.
2. Can be massed for even more psychological power.
3. high initial cost?, but low maintenance - just push the button - no need for aircraft carriers, pilots, etc.
but they're not good for an extended war - too expensive. The M-9 delivers a 500kg warhead, while a single bomber can deliver 10x the payload and with probably slightly better accuracy
Of course, I think missiles fit China's defense oriented policy quite well. I'm proud that in its 5k years of history, China has never waged any wars of aggression or conquest. She only needs to present a strong deterrence - missiles do nicely as they're a big psychological deterrence and are low maintenance.

China is already practicing pseudo-imperialistic policies in Africa (namely in Sudan). It is interested in preserving and expanding it's own power, just like the United States is.

KatiushaVN2, don't judge the PLA by its mediocre performance against Vietnam 1979:
1. Poor training and weapons after excesses of cultural revolution
2. The attacking force is bound to have higher casualties than defenders
3. Only had 200 tanks, no air support, while Vietnam had plenty of former US weapons.
Things are quite different now

I agree, China is much stronger militarily now. It has made enormous efforts to modernize itself and had advanced industrially/scientifically at an amazing rate. It would be rather pointless, but hypothetical a war today would be a very different sort of conflict when compared to the Third Indochina War.

I think China puts too much emphasis on missiles. Missiles definitely are powerful:
1. Gets to target *very* quickly and very hard to defend against.
2. Can be massed for even more psychological power.
3. high initial cost?, but low maintenance - just push the button - no need for aircraft carriers, pilots, etc.
but they're not good for an extended war - too expensive. The M-9 delivers a 500kg warhead, while a single bomber can deliver 10x the payload and with probably slightly better accuracy

Of course, I think missiles fit China's defense oriented policy quite well. I'm proud that in its 5k years of history, China has never waged any wars of aggression or conquest. She only needs to present a strong deterrence - missiles do nicely as they're a big psychological deterrence and are low maintenance.

It's not possible to build a carrier within a year~~LOL Even the US need 5-6 years to make it out, and still China has many problems and difficulties to handle about the carrier, such as the fighters, powers, special steels meterials, etc.

China is attempting to establish a blue-water naval capability, but don't expect that in 5 years they will be operating several carriers. As far as we know, they have not even begun designing and experimenting with aircraft carriers yet. Maybe on the conceptual level, but they are no where close to building and fielding them.

A carrier is a symbol of imperialism - what purpose other than conquest would it serve?
Communist lore decries imperialism and China was on the receiving end of imperialism for much of the 1800s. So I think, that's partly why they're hesitating to have carriers, just like their nuclear non-first use policy.
Of course, arguments based on ideology can be outrageously wrong. They're Chinese 1st and Marxists 2nd, so not having carriers or using nukes 1st could just be due to current weakness.
