When you wrote c'mon guy it seemed to me you're meaning that was obvious that Jerry was Jerry Garcia and so i should understand immediately without making the question
@maxxxx1972 I meant that too. After all this show is at a Jerry Garcia tribute. Not only that but whenever I hear just the first name "Jerry" in any remote musical context I figure they mean garcia.
the small mindedness of some of you fuck heads is pathetic this man put his heart and soul into every thing he did and for his living relatives i love this man for all he gave us! please i would love to hear more about rick .god bless you rick
I was lucky enough to work with Rick a few times, and despite the sadness I felt seeing him in trouble, it mattered not when he walked out onto stage or in one on one conversations. The guy was an angel. I immediately loved him and accepted that he, like most, had inner demons. What a gift he had...we are all the better for his gifts that he shared with his fans...listen to the crowd....RIP Rick...hope the fish are biting wherever you are!
To all those here who have petty, negative things to say about this man, you have no soul. And you obviously don't know what he was about. It's one thing to not like a performance, but the nastiness...it's just wrong.

Who the hell is that Rick called out on stage, man this was really bad. If I had gone to that concert I think I would have had to walk out. Just kills the memories of what once was.
This really makes me sad. Rick had such serious health issues by the end but he still was out there performing for the fans. I saw him in 1989 and he was still in really good shape then.

Rick Danko sucked turds! He was overrated, showed no respect to previous musicians who came before him, and was notorious in his refusal to pay benefits to the road crew who assisted them. He was a closet Republican. He also stated in an interview in Playboy, that when he met William F. Buckley back stage at Madison Square Garden, Buckley refused to share his joint with him. (Yes, Buckley was very pro-marijuana)
Love4dando, i reread what you said not once, but twice, i had to laugh, you have a point, and may i say, love the way you word words...steve from Texas....
Actually, Rick was pretty cleaned up here... I saw him in Evanston IL circa 1989-90 at a small venue on the border of Evanston/Rogers Park and he was pretty fucked up. On an aside, my sister in law is an ex girlfriend of one of his best friends in Boston, and he was still partying hard in 1988-1990. He was still awesome... the life he lived, he chose. He lived a lot of life in his short years... I won't judge.
I got to smile every time I see Danko perform. What a joy the man was- check out those young fans towards the end- I think the man left that feeling behind wherever he went

When I see footage like this of a man who lived for decades with chronic alcohol and heroin addictions, it makes me sit and wonder just how many pedestrians he ran over with his van while drunk or stoned and just kept driving because he didn't feel the tires grinding over the bones of the dead person's body.
I suspect the ditches along the backroads of America are littered with the remains of the people he ran over while on his way to the next party.
Maybe you're livin for decades without alcohol or drugs, but your post here makes me just sit and wonder how many people you didn't make happy with your music, with your voice and with your presence.
That all.
Now you can go on and count the dead bodies under his wheels on fire...
This may have been true, (I made this tongue and cheek comment on the ridiculous assumption by fasterthanyou321) But lets face it, Robbie Robertson seemed to have been the binding that held the loose threads together.
hard to believe that rick and john dawson is on the festival of trains vid signing aint no mor cane, over 30 years earlier.dawson was one next to joplin.he is the one in black cowboy hat singing with rick.
ok treebird22 has a point & its not about being shallow its just honesty like if he woulda got off the drugs & went on a fucking diet or something he might've still been alive now. & like he couldnt even sing for shit at that point so it did effect him musically too. btw he died in 1999 for your infomation.
Treebeard22--um, so what's your point? Are you trying to be funny (you're not), witty (you're not), or just shallow (you are)? Glad you love him, even though he wore a blue blazer.
Sorry you can't comprehend this, so I'll restate. Danko is easy to like, because of himself and his singing. He was not so easy to like, because of his evident lifestyle problems. The blazer just highlights his extra large abdomen, which is a well known sign of metabolic disorder and risk of heart disease. I believe he died of a stroke.
OK folks, I'll confess: Danko is the most likeable member of The Band. He's got a good voice for the music he's doing. He has great hair. But let's face it, he would not be able to get into Japan today (over the 34 inch waist) and whatever was the cause, he just should not wear a blue blazer. I love the man, nevertheless.
You can judge Danko as muchvas you want and this porformance but has anyone stoped and just noticed how much he is smiling and having fun? It is great to see him walking around singing and playing with friends.
The reason the other band members hate Robbie is because of the movie "The Last Waltz" A great movie but, Robbie and director Martin Scorese took over all imput into the movie. Leaving the rest of them out. Robbie got most of the royalties from the flick.
When Rick died Levon made a statement. "Robbie made alot of money from that movie. You'd think he would of dipped into his pocket to help Rick's family. They need it." He didn't.
Sureshot...you're a tool....rick gained wait because of the medication he took for his addiction you ass clown....he was a legendary musician...who the fuck are you to be criticizing his life?
Also, whenever you see some prick whith a beret, you can be sure the music is going to suffer. Perhaps that was Danko's biggest mistake (other than the heroin addiction, tremendous weight gain and alienating Robbie Robertson); throwing his lot in with a band boasting of a beret-wearing violin plaqyer. True tragedy.
I tend to focus on the Band when they were togetehr and what they did at that time. Not the mistakes they made. I don't fuckin hero worship anyone not even that fat fucking donut suckin so called King Elvis.
SureShot--once you get your head out of your ass, you can take your foot out of your mouth. In the future, you may want to try to know the facts before you speak.
I don't get your point about Robertson. I'm glad Danko didn't have the opportunity to play on any of Robertson's post-Band Dawson's-Creek-soundtrack crap. The only reason Robertson has endured at all is because he's a shameless self-promoter with powerful friends. Danko, Helm, Manuel and Hudson were just too genuine for any of that.
Don't get me wrong... I like Danko's singing and i think he is a good guy.. But I just though it was kinda funny. I never said he had no talent or soul.
hi love the band but not sure of the history between robertson and the rest of the band,i know they fell out can anyone tell me the story???acadian driftwood is my favorite band song jesus they were fantastic........cheers
Rick Danko is an absolute legend. Robbie Robertson has lined his pockets with money rightfully belonging to him, Garth, Levon and the late, great Richard Manuel. No one can say Robbie didn't write beautiful songs... but the Band made them classics.
robbie robertson was lucky to be in a band with such beautiful talented people especially Danko, the songs would never have been so good with out them. It takes one man to write a song and the the band to cook it. Rick Danko is one of the most talented emotive singers ever and like Gram Parsons painfully underated. He never lost the ability to shine even when in ill health some people are just special R.I.P
its sad how much weight he gained... he looks pretty bad here... but im so glad he cleaned up before he passed... when the sang this song on the Last Waltz rick did an amazing vocal... the whole concert is one of the best ones ever recorded... great group of people...
It isn't sad when you consider the fact that his weight gain was the result of fighting his heroin addiction. Rick quit using one crutch and found another. I'm happy he was sober before he passed, regardless of however he looked.
To me, this is a very depressing video. I just find it so sad that he really just kind of deteriorated. I love his stuff, but it's sad to know that he died in this kind of shape.

A rushed, folked-up version of a song better left in the capable hands of Robbie Robertson. By the late eighties Danko had lost the beautiful emotive quality in his voice (perhaps due to weight gain?) and what we are left with is a jovial, fat (likable) guy who has left his creative days behind him in pursuit of sing-a-longs at Dead tribute festivals.
You're kidding, right? Rick's voice never lost it's beauty - nor did the man himself! Evidently you're not watching/listening to the same Rick Danko as the rest of us -- or the same Robbie Roberston either!?!?!

Let's face it; the guy who took the stage with the "New Riders" was a shell of his former musical self. The original ached with emotion, this one falls flat on its face. Let's not hero-worship a bloated performer and a re-hashed performance because of what it ONCE WAS. Time to be honest - this version of this song, and the "New Riders" sucked . Full stop.
Just needed to pop on here to say so very sorry for upsetting the very lovely people who are Rick's friends and fans: I have wondered myself why I had the urge to make these sexual posts about Rick and in the past week (could it be since I turned 41) that it was not in an effort to seek attention, but to draw attention to the man himself: Rick Danko, so many women don't know who he was - how beautiful and sweet and nice and I just got frustrated that's all. I'm over it.

There are so many jealous females out there, jealous 'cos I'm a lucky chicky lucky lucky lucky 'cos Ricky speaks to me in the afterlife: he has sex with me and tells me to spread the word: that he was a man like no other!
This man could command a stage and enthrall an audience like no other. I never tire of watching him and he always brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart.
The happy, sweet, gentle soul--the guy with the beautiful smile and the powerful voice, the guy exuding love and warmth, the guy with the crazy gestures and the incredible charisma, the one to whom the audience and everyone on stage is gravitating--that is Rick, the one and only.
To the story....
Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, R. Manuel, Robbie Robertson....
They were "the best".... and still "the Best"!!!!!

Full stop.

Some junkies get skinny, others go the bloated Elvis route. Danko went the later.

of course it doesn't come close to "the band"version,,but i wouldn't go as far to say it sucks..it isn't that bad,,not great either
