dondjazz - all the greats practice and prepare loads, and they will all tell you that. What separates the greats from the likes of you and me is that extra mystical something. Quit the sour grapes man - you and the most of the rest of the human race could not deliver anything remotely close.

Does it matter when this piece was 'worked out?' It would seem to me that it happened at all is incredible. Tommy Emanuel is in this league, but i can't think of anyone else. This guy absolutely smokes. The thing that gets me is that ...HE SWINGS. Very precious....only a few guys do that. John Pizzarelli, Jack Wilkins, Peter Bernstein, the list isn't very long. This is first-rate playing.
Sorry to say but he is just repeating the form over and over again! He does not improvise over the changes! These are memorized chord sequences and little runs! That is why I guess it would be difficult for him to play with a group setting where there are interactions and surprises! You could spot if he plays always in the same key ! I have never seen him play "intuitively"! Everything is "worked out" before he plays in front of an audience! Unfortunately!
I see what you mean in this clip although I'd have to say I've heard him play live along with a variety of different groups and his musicianship has always been outstanding! If you get the chance, check out some old footage from when he used to accompany Stephane Grappelli. Musically, he's almost always reacting, in expression at very least. A clip of the four Martin's is always entertaining as well! You're right though, this clip's not really the best demonstration.
@dondijazz Yeah, that's why Bach sucks -- everything is worked out. Martin, however, is clearly improvising in this performance. Just not in a way that you can hear.
@dondijazz Fuck off you prick! I'm good friends with Martin! You probably couldn't even get the a patch on this playin! O sorry, no you definitely couldn't! Prick!!
Fomo I know Tuck and Tommy well good, but will check the others. Have to say I am sceptical - Taylor's been the boss for me for well over a decade now.
What kills me about Martin Taylor is not just his brilliance, taste, technical skill, musicality, excellent teacher, just...everything. IMO, the best of the best.
i saw martin taylor play this about 5 or six years ago... he met norah jones in a little jazz club before she was famous... and asked her if he could cover this track.
I was fortunate enough to be just in front of the stage at that gig, it was amazing! does anyone know the set-list for it? there was one song they did that started a bit like 'black coffee' but wasn't. I'd love to know what that was..
I feel bad that they didn't even show the bassist once.

i love martin taylors guitar work but i hate this tempo. i think this song sounds best as a ballad. no one can top metheny on this piece.

How is he doing that with his right thumb?? And keeping the other fingers of the right hand going at the same time? Astounding.

I could play that: only would take about 152 years of practice from me ;)

This absolutely floors me. Only Joe Pass got anywhere close to this geezer. Complete freak , who else can play 3 parts at the same time. Cor blimey.

@bazjanagain look for Tuck Andres, or Tommy Emanuel, Beppe Gambetta, Yamandu Costa (amazing brazilian player).

Man I love Martin, but double-timing this song doesn't work for me.

Agreed 100%. What a great player though, huh?
jdomary 3 years ago
yeah the tempo doesn't really suit the song. Good player and all but really kind of destroys the melody as well.

Martin is a gem.
Look out for his latest You Tube...Double guitar job.
It's just terriffic.
I duetted with him at the Jersey Jazz festival two years ago.
What an experience.
